I am having birdcages as centre piece decorations, i have been toying with artificial/foam roses for inside the cage, and this other idea of using real flowers and creating an arrangement round the outside, with tea-lights inside. On top of the cages are a pair of doves and colour co-ordinating ribbon. The flowers are from tesco and not quite the same colour as i will be using, but i just wanted to see what it would look like....what do you honestly think? do they look too D.I.Y?

They certainly don't look DIY - they' look very professional.
My only concern would be the heat generated from the tealights depending on how long they are lit - but then I have a complete fear of fire, so I'd be too nervous to have foam flowers near a flame. Are there three tealights, but only two lit?
Don't let my irrational phobia put you off though - this looks stunning!
I like it but think maybe the doves would look better inside?

lol, Nikky, Yes there are 3 tea lights but one went out straight away! they would also be in a tea light holder. The flowers around the outside will be real ones (if i decide to do this) Thanks for your comments Melody, i was toying with the feathers idea....and i might place the doves in a different position to see what that looks like. I know what you mean about a church candle tho, but as we are having our wedding in 15th century barn, there are additional fire hazards (don't panic Nikky!) and so we are restricted to tea-lights in holders...a flame is a flame if you ask me...but best to follow their rules. :) thanks for your comments... x

If you make them the day before, or even a couple of days before they should be fine. I know a couple of florists and they never make anything on the day. If you use ivy for the trailing, it last days before it wilts but because it's quite a plasticy leaf you can still use it with silk flowers! x

I love the flowers around the cage, looks lovely! xx

we are having this type of centre piece too and as we are getting married in an converted barn we are going to be using LED candles so that there isn't any risk of a fire. They do look realistic and come in tealight or pillar candle form. Just search for them online and i'm sure you will get a good price.
CommentAuthorMrsTacky2B
I love the cages they are so pretty and elegant. Well done you wish i was creative xx

Aw, thank you for all your comments :) well the flowers are still in perfect condition this morning...and were not kept in a particularly cold room. I just wanted to see if i could get away with doing them myself the day before...i have not done anything with oasis before so was unsure. I am defo going to go with these cages as i do like them very much....i have placed the birds in a different position...coz i like my birlds lol.... Solor_powered...i got just one birdcage (so i could have a fiddle about with it) from Dunelm Mill it was £9.99, but i will be hiring my cages from the same place i will hire my chair covers from for £4.99 and they deliver and collect. OOHhhhhh! Bradshaw2Be! i didnt know you could get LED pillar candles!...off to search for those right now! thank you :) Thanks again Ladies xxx

due to the fire hazard would it not be a better idea to use battery powered fairy lights or rose lights or something? i'm worried about the lights peeling the paint off the birdcage after a while

I agree with the LED lights rather than the real flames as you never know what people will do when they are drunk or what a child will do when no one is looking. The other option would to get them little fibre optic fairy lights that are batter operated and hide the battery pack in the oasis and then weave the lights around the cage. You can get them with white wire too so they will blend in.
I really like it and don't think it looks cheap at all. As long as you soack the oasis before using it there should be enough water in it for the flowers to last a good couple of days.

oh yes! i love the fairy light idea too! thanks :P
CommentAuthorMrsMelodyWalker
You could entwine the fairy lights in with the flowers so instead of the cage being lit up it's actually the flowers. The dove's are cute, they would look nice maybe sat on the edge of the birdcage. I've just seen your other pictures and it looks totally different from another angle, I really like them. It'll look gorgeous on the tables

I'm wondering what the birds would look like if they were suspended from the top of the cage by that invisible thread so it looks like they are flying inside the cage or maybe getting them a perch to sit on inside the cage?
CommentAuthorGregorysGirl
They look lovely. I actually quite like the doves, lol, but would be nice hanging from the inside. You can buy monofilament from ebay really cheap which is almost invisible to the naked eye to hang them. It is what I am using to hang my pom-poms from inside the marquee. I am also having bird cages as my centrepieces and am always changing my mind about what to do with them. I am using pillar candles inside and pearls to drape over them but was unsure about working with flowers, was it easy to do with the oasis? Other than that I was thinking about buying a wired rose garland to intertwine in the cages. Something simple. But your cages look lovely, well done! :) x

I really like the first one although do think the birds look a little strange on the top and maybe would be better inside??? I think for flowers look beautiful (very professional) - the only thing I would say about using real ones is would you honestly have the time to do xxx amount 1/2 days before your wedding? Just worth thinking about hun.

CommentAuthorGazza 122
Thanks for all your lovely comments, it was easy peasy actually, lol i surprised myself. I actually find things like this very theraputic so doing it a day before the wedding would actually be a stress reliever. (plus....i will rope my bridesmaids into it if it was a case of rushing because of other things) I think for me personally....i would have such a feeling of acheivement....not only being the brand new wife of the man of my dreams....but making all the centrepieces myself hehehe The birds do look much better where i have placed them (on the flowers), i think ur all right about randomly sticking them on the top, if i can get LED tea lights i will have a go at suspending them from the inside, but if i have to use a naked flame...then i am steering clear of anything even close to a flame. I also love the fairy lights in the flowers idea...love it love it love it! Thank you xx
