I am looking for ideas to remember / honour my nan and grandad that have passed away and just recently my aunt who passed of cancer at the age of 34 :-(

I have thought about readings, special songs from funerals, printed candles etc but it seems a bit somber and I want something happy. Also a nice balance between keeping it as a wedding and not a combination of their funerals.

Sounds a tad grim :-( so just wondered if anyone was doing something similar or have any bright ideas that I can borrow?

can something not be said in a speech? You know....take a moment to remember those that would have loved to have been here.......maybe have a picture of them?

There are a few things that we have done that I don't personally thing are grim.

    1. Printed their names on personalised blue ribbon and then tied them into a ribbon like the cancer research ribbon to sew into my dress for my something blue.

    2. The flowers in the venue are flowers that the people we have lost loved.

    3. H2b is wearing his grandad's pocket watch and wrist watch

    4. we have sixpences from the years they were born.

They are all little things that remind us of them without making it emotional or making it sad. Also it means we know why things have been done but for someone that didn't know them it doesn't make them feel awkard.

I'll be having Dollymixtures on the tables to represent my mum's dad (Grandad) because these were his favourite sweets and I'll ask my dad what we should use to represent his parents and we'll ask ant's mum what to use to represent her parents xxx

We decided it was a bit OTT to overtly start eulogies to past relatives..how many do you mention?? you don't want anyone to think that their special person who has died has been left out. We decided not to mention people by name but i wore jewellery that was theirs and we just remembered them..just the 2 of us when we were together. xxx

We were going to have a table with photographs but thought it would make people cry, then we thought of just a board with namecards on, now we're just mentioning them in our speeches. Sadly there are members of the family who would scoff at which order they go in! Ridiculous I know but we elected to play it down to shut people up. x

We had our celebrant aka person conducting the cremony to mention my dad who died nearly 5 years ago aged 52..was his only daughter and im the first to get married out of me and my 2 brothers....so she said "we also want to think about thsoe that are no longer with us..especially becky's dad who may not be here but will be with her in her heart or with us in our hearts today" .then my oldest bro who gave me away said a speech and had mentioned that there's one man who should have been doing what he was doing ...standing in his place saying a speech and that was my dad!! got me in tears lol

but i had a locket with a picture of him in it and i wore that as my necklace so he was "walking me down the aisle" and closer to my heart!!! I also used the bouquet and put it on his grave the next day!!!

Awww Becca - I've just got goosebumps then hun! How lovely ;o( tearing up now!

I've thought about this as Si's mum passed away 4 years ago and his Dad is still not dealing with it very well...so really worried about how to bring his mum into the day without his dad freaking out and leaving halfway through (which he would do - without even saying goodbye!) Things are strange...

Also - I would have loved my nan to still have been here and want to remember her in some way, as well as my uncle. Jeez weddings are morbid! Lol x

Ahhh Kazza that's sweet, sadly I've lost so many people we'd need a whole brood of doves! But they are loved and I guess they'll be in our hearts on the day so that is what matters. I think I shall shed some tears on the day, I still miss my Nanna so much and she died 20 years ago. We were very close, but then again I was close to all my family who have passed on. *sigh. Like the candle idea too Sara. Maybe we'll have a candle lit in rememberance to those we love.

it is a lovely idea! i have bought a special frame for a photograph of my gran to go in. i want her there on the day but it will feel so much nicer for me if i can see her. also, even though our colour theme is purple, silver and white...i am including a single yellow rose in my boquet as they were her favourite flowers :-) and one of the hymns we are having was her favourite hymn so we are having it. nobody else need know.....but i will and hubby will and it would mean alot. if i could have one person there with me on the day it would be her. she was my best friend ever! she passed away just before i had a chance to tell her i was expecting my first child.....i would loved for my children to have met her :-) xxx

i lost my mum 9 years ago, h2b lost his dad when he was 9, and his grandad 11 yrs ago. the tables were being named after those 3 and all other grandparents. we are also having a monitor playing a montage of memories in the reception i.e. pics of me with mum, mark with grandad that type of thing. i have chosen lilies for my bouquet ; mums favourite flowers which i will lay on grave day after and hopefully wearing a piece of her jewellery, as well as having all mentioned in speech and glasses raised. the reason ive chosen our date of 8th october is the weekend closest to my grandads 91st birthday, which is on the 10th october and although he is still with us, he is extremely unwell and wont be with me on the day (in fact so poorly he doesnt he realise im getting married. i dont care how many of my guests think im/we are being maudling. we wont be able to have them there in person, but im determined they wont be forgotten! xx

Thanks Kate. We have been trying to do it so that we remember without turning into wrecks as we will already be very emotional on the day. For those that also know the people gone they will know why the flowers were picked and the other bits we have done so they know what we have done to remember them without it causing them upset. Unfortunatly for us we have a long list of people that can't be with us so it wouldn't be easy to name them all.

Well we have decided, Luke has 3 people who have passed on and I have 10. We are going to get very small pebbles and write on or engrave their names. Luke will keep his in his pocket for the day and I will have mine in a drawstring bag attached to my bouquet. Afterwards, maybe the next day, we will release them into the sea (our venue is near the sea). That way our loved ones are with us when we walk to and have our ceremony. :)

I was wanting to let some of those chinese lanterns go at my wedding, just because I really like them. But after my nan died last year, providing that the venue will let us, I thought I would now let some go in memory of her and write a message on it.
Also, when we were explaning to my daughter that she wouldn't be able to see her great-nan again, we let one of these go, and told her it was going to heaven, and that's where nanny is now. She then thought that nanny had been sent to heaven in one of these lanterns.
Now eveytime she see's them, she is always saying that they are for nanny and that she hopes she enjoying them. Kids are so cute. :)
