hi everyone, was just wondering if anyones knows a way of gettin round the boundry restriction of gettin married at a specific church? i have phoned 2 churches in bristol and both have said that you must live in a the parish and have not even given any leeway on the prospect of me getting married at there church. i read online that u can marry in a church if u go there for at least 6 months but both vicars have refused this. please help me :(

We had this and even took it higher on disabled grounds as our local church isn't disabled friendly and they said no. If they don't want to do it they won't do it and it is as simple as that. Personally I think it is wrong how they can deny you from getting married in front of God as it is his house not theirs but that is the church all over. You could if you wanted have a registrar come and do the legal marriage in the church and then have a blessing afterwards as there is nothing stopping you from doing that.

This is what it says on the C of E website

You can marry in a CofE church if you can show:-

    That one of you:

has at any time lived in the parish for a period of at least 6 months or
was baptised in the parish concerned or
was prepared for confirmation in the parish or
has at any time regularly gone to normal church services in the parish church for a period of at least 6 months or
That one of your parents, at any time after you were born:

has lived in the parish for a period of at least 6 months or
has regularly gone to normal church services in the parish church for a period of at least 6 months or
That one of your parents or grandparents:

    was married in the parish
In all cases involving church services - i.e. going to normal church services, baptism, confirmation or marriage - this applies only to Church of England services. Even if you cannot demonstrate any of the above connections, we want to help you explore whether it may still be possible for you to marry in your special church.

Talk to the Vicar there well in advance to discuss the options open to you.

i even phoned 1 of the main churches in bristol, st mary redcliffe, and they said no. ive always lived in 'the council estates' of bristol (hate putting it like that) so the parish churches are in communtiy centre, when i went there it didnt feel like a church it felt like just a room with some fold out chairs. thats when i went to the next church which is in the next boundry only about 2 minutes drive from where i grew up but they point blank refused :(

this is the main reason why we are having a civil ceremony as even though me and H2B used to live only 5 minutes away from each other its classed as two seperate parishes so both churches wouldnt marry us as the other one was a member of a different parish. Sometimes the church rules are utter madness lol. Hope you get it sorted hun.

    xx

As long as you go there for 6 months they cant refuse you, unless of course they claim that the date is booked.

i just had a look kimi and i can see why you dont want to get married in it. Its not very appealing on the inside, but can you not change that by decoration etc x

no, its looks exactly the same as it did when my parents got married there in 1982 probs even since it was built in 1959. i dont think decorating it will make much difference. gonna speak to mil2b and see what her parish church is like because she lives in pilton so might be able to get married there instead
