A friend has offered to make our cake as his gift to us, he is a baker and his cakes are nice enough but i have totally fell in love with a cake i seen at the SECC wedding show a few weeks ago its £375, h2b thinks we should go with the friends offer so not to offend him and also to keep costs down a bit as the budget has went quite a bit over in other places what would you do? xx

I think you should go with your friend as he has offered to do a big favour which is saving you money and giving up his time to do it, but could you not ask him to make the cake similar to the one you have seen elsewhere, and just pay a small amount towards it if it is very detailed? xx

I'd go with the friend doing the cake. The thing most people will remember is how it tasted. The only cake that I remember in terms of looks was one that I thought was ridiculous, otherwise I remember how they tasted.

I won't lie to you i would go with the cake i loved, because i have a temper and if something went wrong i would not keep my feeling hidden, you may be able to keep your feelings hidden better than i can but thats just me,i'd want the company.

I agree with the others, give him a practice shot at it, and as they say if you dont succeed try & try again, plus you never know it might give him that confidence boost knowing he can do it aswell and then he can branch out more xxx

I'm doing a friend's wedding cake next month and we've agreed that I'm doing something really simple, but it would have been possible to do something a bit more complicated if I'd had time to practice.

Would you be happy without the sheet of icing? As far as I can see the cake tiers will be fine. The difficulty it getting the sheet of icing to flow and if he is making the flowers from sugar paste.
Its a very elegant cake.

I woul say it doesn't look too difficult, and you know there's always youtube to learn things like that -thats how I learned a lot of things for my cakes I make! If my mate had asked me to make a cake, but changed her mind on design then decided for me if I would find it too difficult or not I'd be a little upset. I like a challenge lol

Your friend can alway proctice the icing of the cake with some round boxes - that's what my sister did when she first started out. He's got lots of time and it's so nice that he has offered to do this. I accepted my sisters offer of making our cake before I'd seen any of her creations, so was a bit nervous. The she showed me her portfolio and knew that she'd do a great job. Has he got any pics of previous cakes he's done - that may put your mind at rest a bit? Hx

I think it's lovely that he offerd to make your cake for you both. I think you should take his offer and ask him to do the cake like the one you like. After all I'm sure that would not offend him as I'm sure most people have an idea of what they would like there cake to look like. x

HB my sister had a cake made for her daughters birthday last week by a family friend, will try get a pic, the cake was completely collapsing on itself :( obviously didnt use any supports

You cant really see much but all the icing had split and was all bumpy and the back had completely collapsed
