A lot of you know that my mum has offered to pay for our wedding cake although she isn't coming to the wedding. But before that my MIL2b offered to make us one. I thought that she was just offering to save us some money but when I told MIL2b that my mum was going to pay for one and that would take a load of her (thinking she would be relieved), she was apparently really upset and was crying. She told me she was really looking forward to doing it for us, so now I am going to have 2 wedding cakes! I couldn't bear telling my mum not to bother as it is a big thing for her to offer, but I thought seeing as she isn't going to be there we could have a photo taken cutting the cake she is buying and send one to her, and then do the cutting of the cake again with MIL2b cake. Does that sound ridiculous?? I guess it is an extra dessert, so can save money on buying all the cakes I have listed for ordering. Aren't weddings fun, lol. :)

i think thats a good idea, you could get your MIL to make a normal cake and pick a cupcake style for your mum to buy then the cupcakes will double up as dessert. or maybe is they something else you could put the money your mum was paying for the cake towards, just explain that someone is making you 1 for free so she could pay for something else? i agree wedding planning is fun... even better when youre in a sticky situation lol :) x

21st October 2011 will be the best day of my life!!!

My mum and dad aren't well off, but the cake is something they could pay for as they get a discount with my mum working for Marks and Spencer. She also ordered 6 bottles of champagne for us costing around £100 normally. Was thinking of doing what you are suggesting, having cupcakes with a top tier from my mum and a 3 tier fruit cake with fresh flowers on top for the "main" wedding cake. We will have a giggle about it on the day I know that, and I am very close to my MIL2b so I will be a lot happier knowing she is happy on the day. x

2 cakes is nice...why dont you have the one mil2b is making as dessert and the one your parents are buying as the "wedding cake" for photo's?

it will save you money doing it that way aswell wont it as you wont need to pay for dessert for everyone! xx

We was thinking of having a little novelty cake and then a traditional wedding cake. I saw a cake that just paints a perfect picture of our wedding night (Bride in bed and groom drunk, face down, bottom in the air, on the floor).

I guess I am very lucky, lol. We are having my mums cake as a dessert after the photos of the cutting as my mum isn't going to be there, whereas my MIL2b will be there and am very close to her, and wouldn't want to upset her in any way, so hers will be the main cake. Get to cut the cake twice, yay! Good idea though Tilley, though I don't know if I would want a Newcastle cake sitting there putting the vintage theme all out, lol. xx

That sounds great, my MIL2B was ment to be buying our cake, but when we won it in a comp. we asked if we could put her money towards our car for the day, which she was fine about.

That was lucky! So now you get a cake for free and a car! Which leaves you more money to spend on pampering yourself on the big day! :D

Yeah i was lucky , my mum works in a bottling factory so i have free minitures for the guys, and i saved £150 off the venue, and £100 off the photo's and so on it goes.

But unfortunately i dont have much for pampering, im trying to scrape together all the money i can for the wedding, with less than 1year to pull it together its been hard and if not for my parents and gran paying around £4500 towards the wedding i wouldnt be getting married for a few years yet.

Yeah, unless it goes wrong, haha. I'm enlisting the help of 2 of my friends. We've made occasion cakes before, but never a wedding cake. I want something quite elegant yet simple, we'll be doing some test runs I think. :) Xxx

Good idea! Isn't there a programme on one of the Sky channels that shows you how to do it? One thing I didn't realise with tiered wedding cakes just sitting on each other was that you need to put dowels into the cake to stop each layer sinking into the next. Handy hints! :) x

Neithe do I sadly, but probably a good thing otherwise I would watch wedding tv all day long! That is very handy, would definitely take advantage of that if they offer! Feeling rather peckish now, but have no cake, lol. Think I should ask MIL2b to do a practise cake so I can see if it is up to standard, lol. ;) x

I know, me too, I would be watching wedding stuff all day too. My hubby to be's parents have Sky or Virgin (not sure which), I always watch four weddings when I'm there. He doesn't even ask what I want to watch anymore, he just switches to that channel, haha, bless him.

I've been craving cake for days now, but have been resisting the urge. I think you should definitely get her to do a practise one, haha ;) I've been trying to convince my friends that we need to do one soon too, lol. :)

Yeah I think accept both and use one of them as dessert for the breakfast maybe (and it could reduce meal cost) instead of offending 2 persons :)

We are just having afternoon tea as our reception, so a buffet and lots of cakes and sweets, cut out the evening part to keep it simple, and seeing as we have loads of young ones there most parents will be happy to be getting them home earlier. But you are right, there is no bad side to having 2 cakes, lol. I am looking forward to cutting the cake twice! :) x
