I have read some reviews about M&S and Waitrose cakes, better apparently than Asda, tesco or morrisons, but wondered if any of you had been to a wedding where they served it, or used it for their weddings. I was going to make my own, as I am a very good cook and baker (even hand bake my own bread on a regular basis), but when I told my mother, she said I need to relax and it's a lot of hard work to make a cake for 100 people, so she said she wants to pay for it herself. This is so expensive that in that case my budget for cake is max £180 if I was to get the generic one just plain round iced cake and buy decorations myself that would be less than that but I want my guests to enjoy their cake.

I used to work for M&S and I can vouch for their cakes being delicious and so much better than getting them from Asdas etc. I have only tried birthday cakes that we had specially made for family members and they are pretty good too, should be at the price they charge, lol. My MIL2b is making mine, she has had many years experience in making cakes etc. so I trust her! And it is free, so even better, lol. Why don't you practise making your own if that is what you want to do, don't be pressured into doing what everyone else is saying you should be doing. xx

If you want to decorate your cake etc and do it yourself you can do fruit a couple of months before hand so it isn't like you are going to be stressing a few days before the wedding. I've opted to decorate fake cakes and then serve sheet cakes from the back. No one will be any wiser and it means I can start to get it all ready now and do it as many times over as it needs. All in all it has cost me about £40 for the icing and bases, ribbons and gumpaste. I was going to ask a friend of mine who bakes cakes to do the sheet cakes for me but she is having a baby just before the wedding so I'm going to buy them from the likes of costco etc as all you need is a sheet cake and lay a roll of icing over the top for them to cut.

we are getting our cake from m&s, works out at £92, my friend has lent us a stand and i have some handmade toppers. i have never tried the cake myself but i know a few that have and they have said they are really nice cakes. i agree with your mum, you will have enough things to stress about and sort out without having to bake a cake too :) x

We're having an M&S cake, the plain round ones. We're going to get the stands that go between the tiers, and my Mum is going to decorate with some flowers. Our venue has a stand that we can use.
We didn't want to spend a lot on the cake, as it's not a major part of the food, and I'm only really having one becasue h2b wants it.

thanks everybody it confirms what I thought I will do MelG have you ordered yours yet? is it the cheapest one they have (I am thing of having that) but am not sure if I have to buy each tier individually (seems like it) can you confirm to me. We're only having sponge as not many people like fruit and my h2b and myself hate it. I was thinking if I get that to get 1 extra large, 1 large and 1 medium, but then order a separate celebration cake which is ivory and burgundy square to add if we don't have enough

i was going to have the m&s 2tier wedding cake and thr cupcakes coming in just over £100-ive since found a friend of a friend who'll do the same(chocolate bottom tier as m&s only do chocolate if you have 3 tiers) for £10 more so ive opted for handmade. but i would have been happy having m&s,heard really good reports at a reasonable price.
CommentAuthormelvis
ive tried the m&s cake once and it was delish... youd never have guessed it wasnt a pro baker... she also piped some little icing pearls on to it and put rubbon around the base to match her colours and it was beautiful xx

I am having the M&S ivory cakes all sponge :). Was wondering if anyone thinks I can stack them rather than put them on individual cake stands? I really love the cake in my photos but cant afford upwards of £600!! I was thinking of adding some lace to the cake which matches the stationary to give it the vintage look at a bargin price!
CommentAuthorMel D
We haven't ordered ours yet, we're going to do it mid April. You do need to order the tiers individually, and the pillar things are separate too. We're having an extra large fruit cake, and then a large and medium sponge. Not sure whether to get white or ivory though ... xx

My sister bought her wedding cake from M&S and it was lovely. We're going for M&S as well- a three tier chocolate sponge. Yum. Still have a while before it needs to be ordered, but very exciting. We're also going to put together a two tier as well for after the religious ceremony (before the registry)- the reasoning here is to have an intimate celebration before the big-*** reception my parents want us to have. Plus it means the h2b and I get to have a Dalek couple cake topper (apparently it's too "silly" for the reception).
CommentAuthorFuture Mrs Doublé
Nisha have a look at my cake topper and we'll see who is the silliest? that's why I won't fuss about cake that would be as nice from there than from a bespoke patisserie. My topper is from USA and is £75, the only extravaganza I allow myself as I am having a budget wedding :)

After saying that my MIL2b was going to make my wedding cake, my mum phoned and although her and my dad aren't coming to the wedding, they have said I can pick a cake from M&S and she will pay for it. Not sure how that works, if she can have it delivered to my address or if she is planning to drop it off, if so that will be awkward...they aren't coming due to us getting married in a church and it being against their own religious beliefs, but still lovely that they are offering to pay for something. Now just have to break it to my MIL2b, but she is helping in so many other ways so hopefully she will just be relieved to have one less job to do! :) x

I was looking at the one with the white chocolate curls, as I thought it would look amazing with fresh flowers or strawbs on it. Not a massive fan of white chocolate but h2b loves the stuff, and I have plenty of cakes to order to keep me happy, lol.

I really wanted a chocolate and raspberry cake, but for the sake of saving money and time, I'm all for M&S Chocolate cake. I'm liking the idea of buying a little one for a taste test. I've been craving chocolate cake for aaages!

GregorysGirl - M&S will probably deliver it to a store to be collected, so they can pick your nearest store and you can collect it.

Also with the white chocolate curl cake, not sure if it is delivered "dismantled" or as it is shown in the photo, looks a bit fancy to split and leave me to "assemble" lol. Could be a disaster! :) x

to GregorysGirl I reckon that as they don't sell it individually tiers it will be assembled, because unlike icing , chocolate ganache is more delicate to handle, why don't you give them a call already to find out, and if it come separate you can always ask for some help to assemble, I am sure that the venue chefs would be more than welcome to help you on your big day
