ive read it a few times that cutting the cake with the knife upside is surpose to bring luck!! but people i talk too hasnt heard of it!! just wondered if you lot have heard of it or are doing it?? xxx

I dont know, cant say as i have heard of that. The tradition of wedding cake came from the times when the groom would break bread over his wives head to show his dominance.

do you use the knife upside down as there is no blade... therfore a fake cut for the piccies ... thats what our venue has said... so that the pictures can be done a few times without actually damaging the cake or something.... maybe am wrong

seriously, google some of the wedding traditions or look it up on wikipedia. Its funny where some of the traditions come from, and helped us choose which ones we needed to include or not lol

the one with the cake over the brides head i read that ot symbols fertility!! but there is loads of traditions!! and keeping the top layer of cake till the first aniversry!! i dont think that chocolate sponge will keep that long not even in the freezer lol xx

I know about keeping the top layer for christening, but we did it the wrong way round and did the christening first, so good excuse to just eat the top layer, lol. As for cutting the cake with the knife upside down, it is only good luck if you think cutting yourself is good luck! Strange where some of these things come from! :D

Oooh upside down for the fake cutting of the cake - that would make sense. I did wonder why the photographers websites said packages included 'the fake cutting of the cake' - always wondered why it wasnt just the proper one lol

(Your caterer should cut through the icing first to prevent your cake toppling over.) "Cutting the Cake" is announced by the toastmaster or best man and is toasted with champagne or sparkling wine.
If you wish to follow tradition, you will want to keep the top tier for your first anniversary. It will need to be carefully wrapped and stored in a dry, cool place, or it could be frozen. Alternatively you may wish to store some of the sugarcraft details in a sealed glass container. Ask your cake maker for advice.

I think that cutting of the cake is a fertility rite. The traditional fruit cake representing the fruits of the marriage (children) and sweet things (sex, love). The cutting representing penetration (!) which the couple do together.
It is tradition for the top tier of a fruitcake to be used as a christening cake for the first born. Store it in a dry, cool place, ideally in an airtight container and it will easily last a year or longer.

lol, love reading all these things! Eh I think I will keep the traditions away from h2b incase he gets obsessed with that! lol. I've always heard about keeping the top tier for the first born christening but we are having sponge and to be honest, I don't want any kept as I will end up eating it! I'm off to google traditions now! xx

Hmmm there's a wedding cake site called Maisie Fantasie that seems to have an excellent history of wedding cakes and the symbolism. It doesn't mention my (ahem) unusual take on the cutting of the cake, so maybe I've got it wrong!
They do however talk about how traditionally the cake would have been thrown at the bride to enhance her fertility.
Waste of cake, if you ask me.
