Hi Ladies, I was just wondering if your name changes to your husbands legally once you are married? I know you can choose to keep your maiden name or have a double barrelled surname....
Is there extra paperwork that needs to be done once you are married so your name is legally mrs xxx??
I'm confused

You can keep your maiden name.
Double barrelling officially requires deedpoll.

yes - legally on paper your last name changes when you sign the register as your married name - as the attending officiant oversees the name change, and can guarantee it.
you have to change it on everything else though.
technically, you would be able to use either your maiden or married name - but remember that when travelling - your passport will have a different name on it - so take a colour copy of the marriage certificate - not the actual one - when you go no holiday. you will need it as proof to change your name at your bank, phone bills, domestic etc...
that's what i was told, anyway...

it's free to change your name on the day btw, but it costs money to change afterwards or beforehand. the wedding day is the only day you can change it free of charge

Take a look at the uk deed poll website, they have all the info on there, but it is correct that you can use either your married or maiden name once you're married and all you need to do is decide which name and then contact all the relevant people and inform them in writing - copy of the marriage certificate helps as well x

When you sign the register you sign in your maiden name though, not your married name.

Remember that if your going on a honeymoon straight after your wedding and booked before you got married and didn't send off your passport before hand to have name change you can still travel in your maiden name as for travelling purposes ALL documents must be in the same name e.g. if you book hol in maiden you must travel as maiden but do remember to take colour photocopy as proof of recent marriage. OOOOO and when you change driving licence please ensure ALL documents relating to your car and you are in the same name otherwise your car insurance is null and void if you have an accident xx

All thats required to 'change' your name is to get married. Then you just show your marriage certificate to doctors, banks etc.
Another handy tip is to not put your marriage crtificate in the washing machine. They are not waterproof.

Is it possible to use both your married and maiden names. For example I have a company that has my maiden name in its name and so it would be easier to keep that bank account and tax etc in my maiden name but everything else in my married name. Does anyone know if this is possible?
CommentAuthor*Kat B*
I got this little bit of advice from the deedpoll website
Continuing to use your maiden name for work or professional purposes With the permission of your employer, it is perfectly acceptable and legal to continue using your maiden name for work or professional purposes. Often, there are clear commercial and career enhancement benefits if you have a good reputation in your profession and are well known to your clients, peers and superiors. In some situations, a change of name at work may be commercially detrimental and your employer will hope you continue using your maiden name.
If you change your name by Deed Poll and continue to use your maiden name, you are not in breach of the declarations you make on your Deed Poll committing yourself to using your new name for all purposes. This is because at work, you are always acting on behalf of your employer and not in your own name.
If you are self-employed, you can continue to trade in your former name. Legally, your will be [New Name] trading as [Former Name].

Just a tip, if you need lots of copies and the companies are asking for the original, rather than spending lots for each copy at the registry office or waiting for it to come back to one place to send it off again, check with a local solicitor how much they would charge to do you some certified copies - these are photocopies which have the solicitors stamp to say they are certified as a copy of the original. They are just as valid as the original, and may save you time and money.

you don't have to take your husband's name if you don't want to ...my nephew took his wife's name...now there's something novel lol

I am really confused weather to take H2B name or not.. It is a lovely name (Oliver) Work don't want me too, I don't know - do you think you lose your identity??
CommentAuthormym72
No not really Vicky. But at the end of the day it's your choice, not your work. After all you're going to be married for a lot longer than any career.

good post! im taking my h2b name but for our honeymoon im going 2 be traveling in my maiden name so im going 2 have 2 make sure that everything booked for it is in maidan name x
CommentAuthorjoey86
I'm still debating whether to keep my name or not - I'm the last one of my family with the surname (no brothers to carry the name on and my dad's brother's kids have their mum's name!). I was considering double-barrelling but my mum has a double-barrelled name and says it's such a nightmare! Also my double-barrelled name would be such a mouthful lol. x
CommentAuthormym72
I'm an only child so no one else to carry on my name - but looking forward to taking h2b's name. He keeps finding it funny because I'm starting to book things like restaurants etc in his surname instead of mine - need to get used to using it but he laughs at me because he knows I nearly slip up and use mine lol.
CommentAuthorNishaVyas88
Oh, I'm glad this thread has come up. Not only am I taking m h2b's name, he's taking mine too. So we'll both have the same double-barrel surname. What would we do in that situation? Would that have to be deed poll or would we be able to do that at the registry?
CommentAuthorTrish Goddard
Im really looking forward to taking my H2Bs name.. i will be Trisha Goddard!! :)
CommentAuthorKatkin
Ooh, good thread - I was wondering the same! It's such a mine field, my head hurts lol. My passport expires in a couple of months so I need to renew that in my married name (I understand I can do this a few months before I get married??), and I need to update my drivers licence as it still has my dad's address on it and I haven't lived there for years (it was only recently I even gave that some thought after my neighbour told me it was illegal and I could be fined a lot of money if I ever had to produce it and it wasn't under my current address - obvious really lol). I am wondering whether to leave it till I get married in june so I only have to change it once and hopefully don't incur two fees. However, I need to decide what name I will call myself 1st lol - I can't decide whether to take on my h2b's name only or have a double barrelled name as my name is very unusual and I am reluctant to loose it!
CommentAuthor*Kat B*
katkin i'm sure it's free to change your address on your driving license it's only when your having to change your name where you'll incur the fee however, you'll have to be extremely careful if you decide not to change the address now because it can be a hefty fine and if the traffic cop is nasty might get points.....
