I have just started trying to plan my wedding for Oct 2012, have been to a few wedding fayres and gathered a few venue details but none of them have a clear cut price package it is all per person per head and this and that and I end up sitting with a calculator for hours! Arghh! It all seems so expensive, really not sure if I can afford to get married at all!

    Anyone know where to start?

    Sad bride! :'(

Take a deep breath and relax as it does get easier. The best thing to do is work out who is going to be coming. It will then give you an idea of what you can afford per head etc.

If it is working out well above your budget then you can do one of two things. Cut the guests list and have a smaller intimate wedding or choose a venue in which you can do your own catering etc to cut down on the food prices.

Once you have worked this out it will help you to find your venue at the prices you can afford. The venue is always the biggest part of your budget so its important to get it right. Once you have set the date etc then everything else then falls into place.

there are lots of ways to keep the budget lower your budget.
we are having a hog roast and buffett with no band or dj at the local village hall. we are just plugging an ipod in to the sounds system. and playing games all night (the joys of being board game geeks and a youth worker)
we are doing bring and share drinks
    we are not having cars
we are just getting our pics on a cd which we can print and present ourselves.
we are making our own venue decorations
we have made our own invites.
other girls will come up with other ways to have a nice day that will not break the bank for you.

Thanks, I'm worried it will get harder not easier :-(

I have so far a guestlist of 60 for the wedding breakfast, 100 for evening recpetion... I thought that was quite small when one venue said I needed over 100 to book there! But all this per head thing makes it more nd more expensive :-(

My friend got a deal £1500 for 50 breakfast guests 100 reception guests down south but I cant find anywhere to rival that up here! So confusing!

Have you decided if you are going for a civil wedding in the venue or a church or registry office wedding? If you want to marry in church then it gives you more scope for the evening venue to shop around. If you want to get married on site then the best thing to do is ring the registry office up and ask them to send you their booklet out which lists all the places you can legally get married in. You can then go through each one looking at the options and prices and cross them off the list or add them to the shortlist to go and visit.

Some do deals for you if you are getting married mid week or out of the summer months. Our venue is 4k but that includes a whole host of things including the civil room, canapes for 38 adults, three course meal for 60, two drinks with dinner for 60, reception drink for 60, toast drink for 60, evening buffet, room for bride and groom, flowers for the venue, cake stand and knife engraved, toastmaster etc and we are getting married in a country house.

Most venues will charge per head but they don't all have minimum capacity at 100! You just have to shop about and it won't be long before you find the perfect venue for you.

First of all my modly duties......would you put this into the right catergory please (venues). If you dont know how then just go to your first post and by the hearts there is an edit, click that and it will take you back to the beginning so you can change what catergory this is in. Thanks
    MODS

Secondly..........We had this exact problem every venue we loved was coming in wayyyy over budget.
So we cut the guest list to the min and worked out our max budget and what we would like from the day. We also werent fussed on the date, so we picked a sunday and out of season one as they tend to be cheaper.
Then with all this info we emailed the venue we both loved with our max budget our guest numbers and basiclly what we would like and asked them what they could do for us within that price???
They got back to us and we are getting exactly what we want with a few extras thrown in and its all coming in at £200 less then our budget.

firstly hun you need to decide what you can afford to spend and work off your plans via that, some of these wedding fayres show the really expensive places for weddings, many are very very expensive. If you don't have a massive budget then it doesn;t matter. My budget was £3000 and i've spent just over. It is doable.

Our reception is at a cricket club, really good prices and really nice room. Shop around hun, make some phone calls. you will find something im sure xx

whats your budget? if you donr mind me asking

    we did ours for £2000
we had reg office ceremony with 50 guests
we then had reception at our local masonic hall, we paid for pimms for welcome drink then we had a pay bar.
    we had a bbq outside
    diso
and cold buffet in evening for another 70 guests on top of the 50
i made my own invites, bouquets table decs etc
luckily 2 of my friends do photograpy and video so we saved money there and paid them £100 each
set up a website for your save the date or a closed private group on facebook to save money on save the date cards, just send a few out to people who dont use internet.
we managed to buy wedding party presents too
hope that makes you feel a bit better

Im not sure if its been mentioned yet as i havent looked at all the posts but you could get married later in the day and just have an evening buffet so your just paying for the one meal instead of a sit down meal and an evening buffet?
I have also found that up here in aberdeen its cheaper to get married in our local church which i wanted anyway rather than the venue so thats another consideration to think of
Im also making my our invites and i did want to make the mums thank you bouquets but h2b doesnt want me to as ive already ranted on here about that but thats another story XxX

you will be surprised with some of the venues. We were adamant that a local venue would be really cheap but this was only for Winter and even though we predicted an increase for summer, we didnt realise by how much and this was for basically a conference room. We got really disheartened to the point of giving up since in our opinion a conference room was going to be 7800 which is ridiculous. We looked at stately homes thinking we couldnt afford them and actually have an amazing venue that is full of character and very impressive detail for only 6000. A big difference if you compare this to all the other venues and their prices and plain decor. Therefore, its worth doing your homework and looking at EVERYTHING regardless of how much you think it will cost. They say the venue should make up a third of the budget on average so if you are doing it on a budget you need to keep this cost down.

ps a friend of mine saved a packet by having no sit down meal and serving tea and cake for afternoon tea which was much cheaper and then had DJ and evenig buffet later on. Having a wedding at 4pm helped get around this though but it was a nice relaxed atmosphere which was better suited to them and everyone seemed to have a good time. Very classy and elegant despite really saving a considerable amount of money.
