h2b is a chef, we run a small catering business in glasgow and have got a lot of practice in and have been quoted ridiculous prices for a cake. So we thought of doing it ourselves but don't know how it will go with it needing to be done the week of the wedding, as the majority will be sponge & chocolate sponge!! Don't want a stressful week!!
CommentAuthorFutureMrsPite
i think as long as u have everything else planned to perfection and near enough done as much as u can b4 the actual day then i think it shouldnt be 2 much for ur h2b 2 handle, especially as hes a chef, i would maybe leave it as one of the last things to plan then u can c if u would have the time to fit in making one or the money to buy one as this will prob be the deciding factor near the day x
As the beatles say, Love Is All You Need x
CommentAuthorlaurab-gtobe
thats a good idea. we're just a bit funny about the prices considering we know how much it costs to make!! lol but that versus stress on the week is the crunch!x
CommentAuthorLegoWife
I'm seriously considering making ours. I can't find anywhere that does cheesecake wedding cakes that don't cost the earth. Never made one before but tried it out today and it's fairly easy!
I say if the money can be better spent else where and you're able to, you might as well!

ooh cheesecake ---- yummy!! yep fairly easy!! I'd be proud on the day that we done it so will just need to make sure the week of the wedding isn't manic with anything else!!
CommentAuthorVonny
I have considered making ours but know i wont have time that week. I made some cupcakes fro a friends birthday a few weeks ago and loved the idea for our wedding. However it took a lot of time!
CommentAuthorkatie1991
I was going to make my own but was told no by my mum haha so I got a good friend of mine that makes cake as well so she doing a 3 teir for 150 pound. I think if u got the time to do it then do it i got my hall to decorate the night before so would be to much of a rush now anyways xx

CommentAuthorbridalmiss
My mum's making my 5 tier wedding cake (her design, not mine!) and my cousin is doing my cupcake favours - think she's going to do 4 sponge and one fruit, she says it won't be too bad as long as we don't expect her to get involved with any last minute wedding running around :-)
CommentAuthorSilvermist
im decorating my own, im just having a small 2 tier cake, im going to buy the plain white cakes from markies then im just buying ivory & diamonte ribbon to put round the cake & a cake topper! so im doing my cake very cheap :-) Thats good that you are both in catering, i think if you plan & have everything you need for the cake, maybe do a test run first you will have plenty of time xx
CommentAuthorkrazykitty
i had a look at doing ours myself (though not making iut just decorating it) and had a look at marks and they were like £70 odd for a large cake with just icing on it!! i might as well got for buying a celebration cake for that and get it all decorated!! so im not sure now!! my friend had her birthday cake made (similar design to what i want) for about £100 wheras i had a look at the same cake as a wedding cake (with someone else she is getting her details for me) and it started at £450!!!
cant understand how they can justify £400 for a cake that they can make so much cheaper!!
i cannot wait to marry my best friend
i love you ry!!!

i enquired about a cake and for a two tier plain ivory cake with a wine ribbon for a "birthday" it was £50 when i asked how much the same cake would be for a wedding they said £280, i dont understand why the price jumps £130 just beacuse its a wedding cake, needless to say according the bakers i am having a birthday cake
CommentAuthorClairebear67
You say the word ' Wedding ' to any supplier and you can almost see the £ signs lighting up in their eyes, its disgusting how they can charge that much more. : )

My mums friend is making our cake. She made my 18th and 21st so she is quite good at them. She is only charging us the price it costs to make it. I used to be a chef so as well refuse to pay hundreds for a cake! x

We get a single tier cake with the package abroad. We are buying ours from M&S for the return reception going to decorate it ourself. My mom is going to also make a 'Real' Jamaican fruit cake for those who want fruit cake. I'm also going to practise making a few cupcakes for the kids that are coming to the reception.
Leave for Jamaica in 2days!!!

i would never be brave enough to make my own lol but if you are confident then go for it :) have a practise run xx
CommentAuthorRockabilly chick
Was going to make my own cupcake tower but I changed my mind after a trial run. My oven is too small and I cant handle stress very well. Its costing us £150 for a 4 tier Cupcake Tower with a sponge cake on top to cut into and that price includes delivery. I thought its better to pay than to worry myself silly trying to make it. I get very tetchy when I am stressed lol

with some of the comments re the price - its crazy!!! as i say, we do catering and have done many a cake or cupcake tower now and would never dream of quoting £400+!!! now to design it!! :)))
CommentAuthorMrsHarding2be
We are having our made for us by a lovely lady, its going to be 5 tiers which will be sponge and fruit cake for £300 as everything is custom made. we looked at a similar cake and it was about £700 which is more than some of the things for our wedding, i never understand why a cake can be soo expensive as all you are doing is cutting it and everyone eating it! x

i like the birthday cake idea!! if i get too stressed near the time i may order a "birthday" cake, nice and simple, and decorate myself!!

I'm thinking of doing my own, cheesecake, as I don't want to pay over £400 for it, and I want to try and do a ricepaper design on the sides, and no catering place will have a go at it!! x

Yeah, the idea is to get some ricepaper and decorating PENS, I stress pens as painting on ricepaper will make you cry lol. I haven't given it a go though, for all I know the pens might be too hard and just tear the thin paper :/ I've made cheesecake before so I think it will be alright :)

I am not the best baker and at first my mil was going to make our cake but she lives in weymouth and we live in newcastle so logistics weren't very realistic on getting it here in one piece so she offer to pay for us to get one made we totally changed what we wanted when we found this out and Now we are getting it made from the lady down the road who has actually turned her garage into her cake show room shes that good at them when we went for a taster I struggled to lie as they tasted that good haha and I must say we got a bargain!!! £205 for 60 cupcakes and a top cake but £25 of that delivery and set up on the day of the wedding can not wait to eat it hahaha

The local sweet shop does birthday and celebration cakes in crispy cake or sponge and you pick the sweets to cover it. They are £50-70 for a three tier depending on your size. Seeing as we are having a rather unconventional wedding seems right to have an unconventional cake. Going to buy a Christmas cake kit next Christmas then make it in time for the wedding and decorate it myself for the wierd people that like fruit cake.
CommentAuthorBanks
I was looking at getting someone else to do our cake but like a lot of people has said - it's silly money for a wedding cake. So after much discussion with H2B, we agreed that I would make our wedding cake (seeing as I already to cakes for family and friends and am looking to start my own business up). Im was initially worried about the stress and the fact that I am so anal about the cakes that I do, but the more I think about it; the more I am looking forward to it. I'm having loads of ideas about the design to make it a wow factor/surprise for H2B on the big day, I think im more excited about the cake than the actual wedding at the moment! haha! I'd say go for it, the sense of pride and acheivement from doing it is well worth it. : ) x

My mil2b is making ours - she was really keen and although it wont be really decorative like I would like it will save us a fortune - I think I might buy some pre-made decorative sugar flowers for her to attach so it isn't completely plain. Haven't discussed shapes, tiers, colours of flavours yet but we will get to that in good time!

Hi hun, I am making my own cake, two days before the wedding, as no one will make the sort of cake we want, my fiance and I are having a Fun Fair themed wedding, with an actual fun fair outside the reception venue, as this is what we do for work. Everywhere that I have been, have said that it is too difficult to make a dodgem car out of cake, yet I have done it before my self, as I make odd shaped cakes for pocket money really, and cupcakes with odd icings on top. LOL!! One company quoted £1000, because it would be difficult, so I am doing it myself, I have already practiced once, and it was perfect an tasted delicious, so if you have the time, and everywhere is quoting ridiculous prices, then I recommend making it yourself, but have a trial run first.

My cake is costing me £15 to make and thats for a cutting cake and cupcakes lol

I'm making ours but I used to make cakes for a living so its the obvious option! I'm going to make as much of it as possible in advance and then get my bridesmaids, mil2b and mum to help me out with it a few days before the wedding.
