Oh and my cake is going to cost about £75 to make but only because I'm being fussy and covering it in belgian chocolate fondant rather than regular sugar paste. I hate to think what a shop would charge me!

i know this sounds quite bad but i am buying mine from the supermarket with the green sign, and then going to get roses on the morning and stick them on x x x saves money i think x x x

We are having ours made as I don't bake much so I couldn't take the change of it being a complete disaster

ditsywife2b not sad at all.........i was going to get the tesco's ones, until i stumbled on a great find on christmas eve. i bought the tescos Mary Berry's all-in-one christmas cake mix. bought 5 of them for £2 each! i am using 3 for the cake, (3 tiers) and the other 2 packs will be to make 30 mini wedding cakes to use as favours.
total cost with everything else i need to buy, like eggs/butter/ cake topper/ etc.......for a 3 tier wedding cake and 30 individual wedding cakes.....£50 what's sad about saving money? :)
I can resist anything but temptation

That was my idea too raggedyanne. Only one cake though coz we don't like fruit.

Made a fruit cake for christmas as a taster and we all really liked it, so making another for the top tier 6", and then a lemon sponge for the middle and a coffee sponge for the base! I'll be a bit busy for a few days before but it comes in under £30 so I'm happy! xx

i would love to do that, i don't mind baking but the icing is the hard part, i have even tried the already rolled icing and it still goes to pot, lol x x x

Remember to put fruit cake at the bottom ladies :) Else without enough supports the cake could easily sink into your sponges.
1..6 Layer Cake... each layer a different colour about 7" Then 50 or so cupcakes maybe more if i dont get too stressed out with covering the top cake haha.

I'll be making my cake. I just could never justify buying one, even the M&S basic put it together yourself cakes are a little out of my price range. For the cost of a pretty basic cake I can make what I want twice over. I'll be doing a three tier cake with a domed top to make it look like a birdcage, fruit cake on the bottom, followed by a chocolate cake and a chocolate cherry brownie cake on the top. I'm really lucky too because h2b is getting me a spray gun for painting the cake for my birthday.

Don't buy the ready rolled, its generally to cold to work with, get a packet of it and work it until its really sort and pliable then roll it out :)
