I am horrified by the prices quoted to me for food by several venues. I have been quoted anywhere between £26 - £76 per person!
I would never dream of paying more than £30 per person if I were in a restaurant, and then i would expect something pretty special! I am horrified that for £30 per person i can expect some kind of vegetable soup, leg of pork, and apple pie! and have to add on at least £10 a person for a drink or two! Why are venues charging extortionate prices, sometimes thousands of pounds, to hire them out and then even more for a sub standard carvery that costs them barely anything to produce?! I know that it is a business, so of course they have to make money, but does anyone else feel like they are being robbed?
One country pub I looked into, actually offered me a 3 course wedding breakfast for only £26.95. Which is great, it's just that their wedding breakfast menu is identical to their "3 courses for £10" offer that runs for any other customer who isn't a wedding guest! When i confronted them about this I was told it was to cover staff costs. Obviously the £600 they wanted for hire of their function room couldn't cover any of the staffing costs!
Sorry for the rant! xx

i know it is stupid! i hate how companies get away with this. i wish there was something that didnt allow them to do this but i dont think that will ever happen!
my venue charges between £75-£95 per head but we are doing their special offer they are doing at the mo so is costing £28.73 per person. makes you laugh why they cant charge that all the time doesnt it! xx

I know. It really is disgusting, isn't it! We live in London and we were lookingat £80pp upwards at some places! We've gone for a local restaurant that's charing us £2500 for all day hire (even though we won't be arriving until 5 - mum and Godmother will be decorating in the morning and they'll need the rest of the time to cook our yummy food!), hot food for 80 people (we've chosen the menu ourselves - they said we could have whatever we wanted!), 2 glasses of bubbly per person, all staff etc. No other costs at all. Much rather give our money to a local business rather than one of these chains that are only out to make a quick buck. Hx
Vegas baby!

It is really annoying! We are on a tight budget and looking for somewhere local which would be laid back but still nice. Most of the hotels and restaurants in the area, which we know fairly well and have always previously been affordable for meals out are suddenly out of our budget when we mention the "w" word!
Mrsbarkertobe, for a wedding breakfast worth £75 a head I can't imagine what they could possibly do to it to make it worth that much! Perhaps your own individual personal waiter and a couple of bottles of champagne, but that might be inappropriate at a wedding... Well at least you are getting a deal on it!

CommentAuthorMrsOwen
a lot of companies add money on as soon as you mention "wedding" good luck with finding somewhere xx
the greatest thing is to love and to be loved in return
I know i was doing so well planning a "function" until they asked me outright whether it was a wedding, we i admitted it was they said the prices would be different to cover the different needs of a wedding, i gave up on this venue immediately, but unfortunately never found out what these different "needs" were!
CommentAuthorTotallyLovedUp
i think its wrong they can charge that amount, and not just for food either! yo mention weddings and the cost triples at least! i am a firm believer at shopping around esp the bay of e, as you can get things at a much better price if you ask for something for anything else (rather than sayng it is for a wedding)
CommentAuthorCroc
Ours is £95 per person that includes canapes, welcome drinks, 3 course meal bottle of wine and water each, champers for toast, coffee and petit fours and bacon rolls in the evening.......I think mines value for money... I designed the menu for our 3 course meal and the food was lovely...and they have given us lots of leeway with things...
I just think venues charge a lot for food but if you get a good venue that isn't a chain what you get is better value/ service... As they are only as good as their last wedding.... Therefore more negotiation room
But I have noticed you say wedding and they "pop" on 45% extra!!

I feel like i've made some progress having found what seems to be an honest and decent venue (calm down ladies!) am hopefully going to see it in the next week or so. Their philosophy is that weddings don't have to cost more (which is the opposite of every other venue i've seen!) it's so refreshing. I know it's early days, but hopefully it works out between us! lol
CommentAuthorMel D
Anywhere you go, mention "wedding" and prices seem to treble - it's total rip-off, they seem to think it's a license to charge whatever they want!

This is why OH and I don't want a traditional wedding breakfast or sit down meal during the reception as we simply can't afford the prices per head. I refuse to forl out thousands just to feed people, some of whom I won't see again for months!
I'm trying to find a restaurant or pub that has a room big enough for us all have a bog standard lunch in, then a room for a party in the evening, not easy in this rural part of the world though

I completely agree! And because everywhere seems to do it people seem to think it's acceptable! Well anyone who is happy to pay out that sort of money is obviously very lucky to have that sort of money to spend like that. However, people who are on smaller budgets seem to be really suffering here, and i suspect many are stretching their budgets or cutting back on other things to cope with the outlandish cost.

I was thinking a local hotel looked decent, but OH isn't keen as it doesn't look great from the outside and has a reputation locally as "the old folks home" lol, it's called the Sherborne Hotel, I've put a link on my wall, what do you lot think?

The grounds are lovely, you'd get some really pretty photos in the gardens. The building itself isn't the worst place I've seen, a little utiliarian, but you don't need to have it in your photos.

I agree with your OH, its not that picturesque from the outside, but no one is going to be standing out the front for long. I think the menus look affordable and have a good choice range. I think it's definitely worth a look round! Have a chat with friends and anyone who has been there and see what they think, especially about the friendliness of staff. It's a good way to get an idea of what they are really like because any potential venue will be nice to you when you are looking to spend your wedding day there, they'd be stupid not to! Good luck xxx

to have my bms hair curled at a salon if they were not a bm just a guest would be in the region of £15-£20 but because they are bms they are charging more like £80-£100 per person. even though its the same bloody thing!!!!
CommentAuthorbarbie86
I'm happy with the cost of mine: £40 a head for either a knife and fork buffet or combination (might have starter and dessert served to the table, then a buffet main so people have a choice), and £30 for the drinks package (1/2 bottle of wine; 1 welcome drink; 1 glass of champagne); I've priced up their standard food and drinks prices and it actually works out cheaper.
One tip, you could make the booking nearer the time stating it's for a birthday party, or, ask for a quote for a birthday party for the same number for the date you have in mind, and see what they see (ideally do it via email so its in writing), Then say the plans have changed and it will be a wedding but you'll have the same number of guests and the same food, so will still be sticking with your booking. They might get annoyed, but who cares? They can't say anything, you are having the same thing for the same number so it should be irrelevant if it's for a large birthday group, or a wedding group. Or, be firm: if you are paying for the venue ask that they break down their costs and ask how it can cost £600 plus £16.95 a head just because it's a big group; you might be able to negotiate an in-between point.
CommentAuthorbarbie86
re hair, why do you need to tell them what it's for?.. You're making an appointment for a hair-up, that is all they need to know; they do not need to know what event it's for. However, BM hair-ups are often done at home, so you can expect to pay extra for travel costs; also, most BM and bridal hair styles I've looked at incl a trial run; I've looked at one and the bridal hair costs £100, at home, and includes a trial run; given I normally pay £50 for a hair-up in my salon, that's pretty reasonable IMPO.
CommentAuthorMagicFairies
We're planning to book an up-hair appointment at a salon in town, having no intention of telling them its for a wedding, My bridesmaid will just have a simple blow dry and style and i'll get something a bit more interesting done. Thinking of telling them we're going to a summer ball/ prom (we're all young, early 20's, so i doubt they'll think it unlikely or strange). I just don't see why i should pay 4 or 5 times more than anyone else for the same result!
CommentAuthorpanther_87k
maybe all us brides should start up a petition to send on to the trading standards people "We're fed up of paying triple prices becuase we mention the word wedding!" maybe they could take it further

Food doesnt have to be expensive. Im paying £16 per head for a posh bbq. I know its not everyones cup of tea but there is always alternatives. Like hog roast, fork buffets, bbq's x

my 3 corse meal is going to cost around £5000 and then were stil having evening buffet. the venue is very reasonable apart from the food. xx

it is daft. We are paying 100 for canapes, 3 course meal and coffee, welcome drink, 2 glasses with meal, glass sparkly with speeches and eve buffet. The annoying thing is that it seems to be this stupid cuisine where u get naff all in terms of portion sizes. Rip off but everywhere in cheshire with decent building and grounds seemed to be similar. They rip us off as they are all in the same boat so know we cant really go elsewhere to receive the standard of wedding we would like. We are paying 5000+ just for food and drink then another 900 just to hire the ceremony room for 30 mins and then all the rooms to sleep in and they still charge these prices?????
cant wait to be Mrs Evans less than 3 weeks woooo

we were pretty shocked at the prices for food too, but after looking round a few venues we realised that was standard and just had to bite the bullet and pay it! we're paying £36.50pp for starter, main, desert and tea & coffee. most expensive we saw was £80 but that place didnt have a venue hire charge where as we are paying £2k hire charge so i guess it evens out in the end x
CommentAuthorLiz3yy
Thanks to those who replied about the hotel I had in mind, this wouldn't be for the ceremony, we have that sorted. This would be for the lunch/reception in the evening. I'll see if I can convince OH to at least go and view it :)

we looked at a hotel where I had my 40th and it was £40 per head for champagne reception, 3 courses and live entertainment. Great, we will have that deal please..oh not possible...it is £65 per head and £800 for exactly the SAME entertainment. What were the extras? well a red carpet and toast master????? It has made me so annoyed!
CommentAuthorLiz3yy
Flipping ek....I've convinced OH to view the hotel I mentioned above, they have a package where you don't pay any room hire fees and just pay for the food and drink you have. Buffets are up to £12 per head, 3 course dinners around £40, not bad I think

A simple case of supply and demand sadly ladies...if enough people will pay it, then they'll charge it :(
CommentAuthormartay (marie)
my venue were charging me £36pp for the wedding breakfast, but then the VAT increase took the costs up even more, we have now scrapped the wedding breakfast as we've altered the day slightly but when i met with my venue wed co-ordinator i questioned why on the buffet menu there was no choice deserts available to pick from. she promptly offered me a gateau for £37.00 for 16 people. sorry but no, my mums business was cakes and i know what it takes to create/bake one, and i could probably make one myself, but venue wont let external catering be included, and cant you get them from iceland for a fiver????? RIDICULOUS
all ive got to give to you are these 5 words tonight

I will not be paying anymore then £30 pp out of principle. I am disgusted at the attitude of the pub/ inn I mentioned in the starting post and i understand that many venues have a similar attitude. They seem to think if one bride refuses to pay that much she can go elsewhere because they'll find someone else to rip off! I know a lot of the really desirable hotels, country houses and clubs charge extortionate amounts because they know that if someone really wants their wedding there they will save up, or stretch their budget to match any price they want to charge.
I agree martay/ marie, those gateau cakes are ridiculous, you can get them from the cash and carry for next to nothing (less than iceland)! There is no way it cost them £4 to buy/ make it let alone nearly £40!
We all need to think a bit more before blindly accepting the prices they give us! Think - did they make it? - how much did it cost them? - how much is it worth? Some places will do deals with you if they want to keep you as a customer, from their point of view making a deal and not earning as much on a few slices of cake should be nothing compared to the business you give them with your wedding reception! From my point of view, its worth a try, the worst they'll do is say no. lol
CommentAuthorMaggielou
The stress levels of getting things right for a wedding are high for venues but it's a licence to print money!! Get everything clear in ur T&Cs, 1 venue tried to charge me an extra £500 hire after their initial quote bcos they realised it was a Saturday....I gave them the date in my first email! I don't love our venue, but it's cheap! Only having a UK reception & most ppl r travelling 2 hours-here we can afford a 3 course meal & drinks with the food. Other places we could only get a hot fork buffet for the same price!! With the pubs, check out deals like a grand day for a grand kind of promo. Pubs doing the £10 deal in the week aren't making money on it, so there's no way they'll make such a loss for a wedding. Negotiate too-it's ur big day, ask questions. What drives costs? What's in season? Can any food be prepared in advance/night b4 to ease staff on the day
CommentAuthorMrsBroady2B
I know it's so annoying. The first venue we looked at was £60 a head, but because we are only having about 50 guests in the day thy said that they do a min of 60 so we would have to pay an extra £10 a head for another 10 guests that would not be there. That was £300 on nothing. I thought that was just pretty discusting when you are spending so much money there. The next venue was brilliant. They had 5 different menus cheapest was about £21.95 and the dearest was only £29.95, so I was really pleasd with that. Also whats so brill about this place is we dont have to pay for the hire of the room, just the food. U think we would be mad not to go with that place. :)
