And will it be considered bad luck if its not? I'm wearing peep toe shoes and I spent 3 hours in a second hand shop looking for a sixpence that had my nan's year of birth on it as she passed a few years ago, so I really don't want to loose it! I was just going to super-glue it to the middle of the bow on my Garter. You think that will work?

    Its meant to be lucky

    The saying goes

    Something old, something new
    Something borrowed, something blue
And a silver sixpence in her shoe

A sixpence in the bride's shoe represents wealth and financial security. For optimum fortune, the sixpence should be worn in the left shoe. This tradition may date back to the Scottish tradition of the groom placing a silver coin in his shoe for good luck. Many companies sell keepsake sixpence pieces for weddings.

You can put it underneath the insole of your shoe if it will lift up. I did this when i got married first time :-)

I think i had seen somewhere that it is the father of the bride that places the sixpence in the brides shoe.

Cheers girls! Going to have to have a play around and see if there's a way of putting it in the shoe without it falling out. Lol. Either that or its new shoes for me!! :D

There's a second hand shop in Bath that has thousands of them. Like I said, I literally spent 3 hours looking for one with my nans year of birth on it! Nooooo way am I loosing it!

LoopyLou is right. Tradition states that the father of the bride places the sixpence in the left shoe. The coin was meant to bless the couple and symbolize a marriage filled with health, wealth and happiness. The same sixpence was kept in the family, passed down from one generation to the next.

Mine is going to be from either 1902 or 1903. They are the years my h2b's nan and granddad were born and he is having one and then I'm having the other.

I went on ebay and typed in the year and sixpence. Sometimes you have to wait for them to come on. Either that or go to google shopping results.
