I've had a google and can't find the answer.(or wasn't looking in the right place.) I can find that you have to get married in England and Wales between the hours of 8am and 6pm but can't find anything that tells me why it is these times? I would have thought if you had a priest, vicar, registrar willing then you could get married anytime. If anyone knows why then please let me know as its doing my head in now.

The vicar told us that we couldnt get married when it was dark outside as years and years ago you may have accidentally married the wrong person if you couldnt see them (due to the light!!!) so that may be it???

Found this on a web site

Dates back to the days when the only place you could get married was in a church.
The vicar/priest had to say morning prayers before he could ''open '' the church for other services. Similarly at the end of the day , no other services could be held after evensong , traditionally held (and still is) at 6pm. For hundreds of years you could not get married on a Sunday as the church was ''in use'' for other services and prayers all day. When the law changed to allow non church weddings the civil wedding registrars kept to the same time table . (plus it fitted in with office hours)

I thought it would be because the registrars have lives too, and wouldn't want to work 24 hours a day.

You've also got to appreciate that Vicars/Priests/Reverends/Registrars have lives too (as does everyone else in the wedding industry)
There's 10 hours in the day when you can get married, surely that's plenty ??? Plus can you imagine how much fees would be if you were asking them to do overtime *meep* Suddenly £700 for a ceremony would seem like peanuts!!

    It's right what they say
"The course of true love never runs smoothly"
But if it had been easy then we wouldn't love each other as
much as we do right now - 1 week to go :D

It's one of those old laws that never got updated, but I think 8am-6pm is plenty of time!

to be honest why would you want to get married before 8am or after 6pm,i mean before 8 am means youl be up early hours of the morning getting ready and marrying after 6 pm means youl get hardly any time to celerbrate, besides which you have to think of the poor registra doing your service,is it really fair to ask them to get up so early or stay at work so late, they have their own lives to lead aswell
