    Hi there,

Long time lurker but new poster! Just thought I'd get some consensus on the popularity/experiences of weekend weddings. We're getting married on the Isle of Skye, family are scattered all over the place spain, germany, glasgow, edinburgh, new zealand... so we thought well instead of dragging everyone over to edinburgh (where we are based) for a wedding lets make it a weekend, book a small hotel on Skye and have the place to ourselves it will be great!

I've just had a conversation with my mum and she thinks what we're doing isn't normal and that we should just have a one day wedding in edinburgh so people don't *have* to pay for a hotel, and that people wont come if they have to pay to stay in the hotel and travel all the way to Skye.

We've tried to make it as cheap as possible for people, all they will have to pay for is their room, everything else we will cover even a coach leaving from glasgow to take people up to Skye and back again, we wont be asking for presents just that people come and spend the weekend with us, but what if people don't come?!

Has anyone had or is planning a weekend wedding? how did it go? are we being weird and unreasonable in doing this?

    ARGH!

I don't think you're being weird or unreasonable.

We looked into hiring a huge house for the weekend but simply couldn't afford it. It's a great idea for people who are scattered all over the place, that way it's not pointless having to travel for just one day, you also get to spend more time with you're loved ones.

One thing that I've learnt is that there will always be someone who's not happy or who doesn't agree, I've learnt that they don't matter. It's your day, do what you want, not what's normal or what people tell you to do! X

Thanks Laura, I've also just had a thought.... if we were to have the wedding in Edinburgh the only people who wouldn't have to travel and book a hotel would be people from Edinburgh and Glasgow! Everyone else would still have to pay for a hotel to come!

I think its a great idea :) We looked into a big house that was licensed for weddings so that people could come and stay for the weekend and have a really lovely time. We were put off by his mum but I still kinda wish we'd gone for it x

I think it sounds really nice and seeming as they only have to pay for hotel for what 2 nights which people often do if having to travel anyway and everything else is paid for and your not even wanting pressies ! Ignore your mum, do what you want and thos who matter and care enough will make the effort x

    We had a Saturday wedding.

We had guests travelling from various parts of the country as well as from abroad. We held the reception at a manor house which also had hotel rooms which people could book if they wished to make a weekend of it. Others drove home afterwards. It's good to give guests a choice.

I think it's a fab idea because u have family coming from everywhere so it means spending time with ppl u don't see very often, I wouldn't be able to do it because I don't think I could entertain my family for a whole weekend x

We are having a weekend wedding and everyone loves the idea! Registry office on sat afternoon attended by the bridal party only, the a meal with all the family the sat night at the venue. We then have the big traditional blessing on the sunday. We get bith the small intimate celebration and the big party we wanted. It has gone down really well with most guests paying to stay two nights x

Sounds like a lovely idea. Especially if the only extra cost involved is the stay.
