    Hello,

I Have read in several books and magazine articles now that it is customary to provide food for professionals their on your day ie photographer, videographer, musicians etc.

Is this normal? and what do they expect....a wedding breakfast?! Of course, I wouldn't mind them having the odd canapé and in the evening the band and DJ are more than welcome to help themselves to the buffet, but what about during the day?

    Xx

Nope, you don't have to feed them! They should either bring their own packed lunch or buy their own meal at the venue if it has a separate bar/restaurant there. I asked my photographer about this and other friends who have had weddings and they all said no need to provide food for suppliers on the day. A couple of photographers I "interviewed" said they did need to be provided with food but the one we have chosen is very clear that he will not need food provided.

I would just ask those you engage though whether they expect food. I think personally that you shouldn't have to because it could add hundreds of pounds to your wedding cost for extra meals.

You don't have to but we have arranged for him to get a BLT when we are eating, this was only possible as the venue has it's own separate cafe. x

    Check your contract's.
My friend's photographer had in his that he expected a 3 course meal, and 3 soft drinks throughout the day for 12 hours of work as well as what ever was given in the evening but they would eat it in a seperate room, like the bar or somewhere?
For that amount of work I actually think it was reasonable request.

When meeting your suppliers make this one of your questions, some will have it written in the contract some expect a meal to be provided maybe not the breakfast but something light like a sandwich or something and others will happily bring there own

so it's really all down to who your suppliers are and what they want to do

I think the other replies are right, it should say in their contracts. My venue asked me if I want to give the photographer a wedding breakfast or a hot sandwich ( a bar meal basically) .

I'll check my contracts, thanks girls!

I don't want to sound tight, but at seventy quid a head. It's a lot onto the cost to have them having a full three course meal. Ive no qualms at all about paying for em to have a hot sarnie or something bar snacky to eat, but just don't think I should be forking out for a three course meal on top of the price they quoted!

I'm with you LauraJo. If I had to provide a 3 course meal that was our wedding breakfast we'd be looking at £114 per head plus if they had the evening buffet on top of that it'd be £140 per head, no way no way!

I read in our contract for the DJ that he gets one or two drinks free or something, we're fine though to buy him one or two providing he plays the music we want lol. Didn't say anything about food for the DJ but he can have some of the evening buffet obviously because he won't be there in the day.
Our photographer is my bridesmaid (doing evening piccies, she's studying photography anyway) and one of our friends who is a keen photographer is doing the main ones and he's a guest anyway so it's not a problem for us feeding him.

Just out of interest how many of you have it written into your contracts at work that you get provided a meal (never mind a three course meal)? I have to provide my own lunch when at work.

I dont mind sorting something out for photographer and the dj can help himself to the evening food but I think it is out of order for someone to put that in a contract!!!!!

Ah, there's nothing in any of the contracts...and I totally agree, I often work at clients places and it's never stipulated that I have to get fed lol!

I just got the impression it was customary, from a couple of books and articles...

I don't mind providing drinks and light refreshments, but blooming' heck, there has to be a limit!

I didn't even think of providing food. On reading this post i've found myself quite shocked! I agree with some of the posts that you pay them enough money, some of the wedding venues i've been look at are quite pricey per head so you're talking that on top of the price they charge! xx

We arranged for the venue to provide some sandwiches for the photgrapher and videographers. They bought their own drinks. There's no way I would have agreed to them having a meal from the wedding breakfast ... if it had been written into their contract I would have made them take it out ... or charged them for it!

I agree that when you are paying for someone to do there job, they shouldn't have to be fed as well! In our contract we have to provide our photographer with a sandwich. We really wanted that photographer and he was reasonably priced anyway, so we will be providing him with one xx

Our photographers told us at the initial meeting they would require food if working a long day.... They arrive at 10am and not going Until midnight so think that reasonable. They would be happy with a sandwich but we insisted they have a full meal like we are but they will eat in in a separate room and in the evening I said I was happy for them to help themselves to the Buffett. As for the DJ he is only working a few hours so not officially feeding him but he can help himself to Buffett xxx

Oh, I've no problem doing them sarnies...

But I can see why they would want some food if they are there ten til midnight millz! My photogs are there ten til three, so not so bad, think I'll just see if the hotel will give them something snacky....I just don't want to be confronted with two hungry photogs on the day saying 'where's my dinner' lol.

The musician is only there for a coupleof hours, so she should be ok

I used to photograph weddings, but never had it in a contract that I needed feeding, but I think its quite impolite NOT to offer a sandwhich at least.....
Personally I took my own packed lunch, and sometimes I was offered a meal/sandwhich, but mostly I was not.
On a hot day, not to even be offered a cold drink I think is inhuman.
I was expected to work from turning up to leaving.......sometimes that was 12 hours. And was expected NOT to take a break .

I did make one stipulation, IF I was expected to stay and photograph the speeches, then I would like to be offered a sandwich at least.....because usually the speeches is when I would get myself something I had packed. If the couple wanted me working all the time then I needed some kind of food/drink.
If they could not accomadate me with that then I told them whilst the speeches were going on, thats when I would get my break.
I didnt ever expect to sit with the guests and have the full works......just a sandwich and a cup of tea is all I needed.

This is one of the reasons I gave up on photographing weddings, not the food, but the way clients treated me as if the work I did didnt matter.

My own photographer joined us at the wedding breakfast, and even drank Champagne with us......it all depends on how much you value the people working for you I suppose. Our photographer turned out to be diabolical, but I treated her with respect all the same.

That's interesting, anne, it's good to get 'the photographers perspective'....

I will definately make sure they are offered a drink and something to eat...thinking about it, if we have workmen in I normally do them a bacon sarnie or something...

Is that the best time for them to go on a break, during the speeches? I'm not fussed about them taking photos of the speeches really. To be honest, I hadn't even thought of them needing a brEak, which is silly as I wouldn't like to work for five or six hours without a break so I'm sure they wouldn't.

Well in my experience, the guests dont want photos taking when they are eating, and they dont make for good photos to be honest.....and it is the only time when there is a bit of time for a breather.

If I take photographs of the best man, groom and brides dad talking, they would be the same photos if I took one or a hundred and one.....its just a picture of them reading from a sheet of paper really isnt it? and like I say, when would I have time for a breather if not then, because before and after the meal there are photos to take. But I always make it back for the cake cutting.

5-6 hours at work without a break is no fun.......and let me tell you its quite hard work photographing a wedding, its not just pointing a camera and clicking the shutter. especially if you are lugging a pile pf equipment around with you all day.
I dont take a break just when I feel like it, I make sure I time it inbetween stuff......

If they particularly wanted the speeches photographed, I would obviously do it, but then I would take a break another time.

Also, if you DO offer to feed them, most of them, including myself....would actually PREFER a quick snack at the bar....that way they get away from it for a little while, AND they can eat it quickly and be back for the cake cutting etc......
