OK, up until yesterday I was just having some background music played at wedding breakfast from a stereo!

I had never thought about having a string quartet, harpist etc but I noticed a few people are having them so I looked into it

Today I provisionally booked a harpist who is going to charge me £595 for 4 hours BUT I have just found an email in my junk folder from a string quartet that I had emailed for a quote, they will charge me £740 for 4 hours and I can use the 4 hours through out the day.

Now I'm stuck on which one to choose, obviously with the harpist I'm saving money but the string quartet is really tempting. So, if you were at a wedding which would you most like to see or be more impressed by?

I would much prefer the quartet over a harpist. To be honest a harpist for 4 hours would drive me nuts and put me off me dinner!!! ha ha

I got a harpist for £50 an hour so I would continue to shop around. I've also seen string quartets for a lot less too.

I'm in the south east though Jo and have found everything is more expensive here. I sourced a great chocolate fountain price only to then find they were in north Wales, hence the cheaper price :o(

That is crap. You would think that they would have one price for all. Would it be cheaper to pay them the extra fuel money to come down to you? I found a decent swing singer in Manchester and he is only charging us an extra £40 for fuel. Works out we pay £400 for the whole night including star curtain, disco and live singing. We couldn't have got that locally to us.

maybe you could try the local universitites. You'll find string quartets for a fraction of the price. My friend got through uni by playing at weddings. x

They wouldn't travel. I have found someone (a small business locally) who will do it for £250, but only 6 dips instead of 10. I'd better get it booked! x

Hi guys my strings are costing me £545 for the church and drinks reception so about 4 hours I think.

I would prefer a string quartet to a harpist but think both would be lovely.

Ahh I'm so glad people have commented!

I need to shop around more by the look's of it but Steve mentioned looking into hiring the Welsh Male Voice Choir (I think that's what they are called" so if we have them I think I might actually go for a harpist so it's a little more gentle!

Oh FFS! This is driving me mad! WHY is asking for suggestions on a friggin harpist playing at your wedding 'rubbing people's noses in it' ???????? I thought this website was to help people with ideas / give suggestions etc. Would anyone sink a thread asking for opinions on flowers / dresses / venues etc?? Nope...

Melody - it's your wedding and if you want a harpist, have one!! You shouldn't have to worry about what others are thinking. It's been said before - if it's something that doesn't interest you then don't read it! Sorry for hijacking your thread with a rant but it's things like this that are causing the friction in the camp...dear me!

ANYWAY.... I was speaking to a girl at a wedding fayre a few months ago who was a violist and worked with a pianist, but they both took seperate bookings. I know you're in Bristol hun but if anyone in the North West wants their details, let me know and I'll post them on your wall. (their music was beautiful!) I'd love a string quartet but we have a baby grand piano in the foyer of our hotel so trying to find a decent pianist to play for an hour, then just have our own tunage on during the wedding breakfast.

Unbelievable! Get that poll back up Melody, you are more than entitled to asking people their preferences of harpist versus string quartet. This is out of hand. We would love a string quartet but the choir sounds interesting!

well in the case of getting the choir (which sounds amazing btw) - I think your right about a harpist maybe complimenting them better but I'm sure it would all be beautiful!

And without trying to cause friction I think you need to report whoever told you to sink this thread to a mod because that is getting beyone a joke!

Thinking about the choir - I've just read on a SQ site that they require snacks and refreshemnts (which for 3 hours I think is a bit extreme!) so that'll have to be costed for 4 people. If the choir require the same (even if it is just a sandwich and drinks), have this in mind when budgeting.

This isn't meant to put you off honey, just something I noticed as a 'hidden extra' xx

i voted string quartet as the music just sounds beautiful walking down the aisle. On the flip side, my friend had a cd player and that was beautiful too :)

We are having a string quartet and to avoid 'rubbing ppls noses in it' I can give you the details in a private chat if you like but seriously this is getting silly. We were told we were allowed posts like this and the mods even stated that those with a few hidden luxuries will need advice too so whats the problem. The mods even said dont read it if it doesnt apply or will offend. Some people need to grow up and well done melody for posting a useful thread for other brides who need simlar advice. you are not rubbing anyones noses in it. You may choose to have this but cut back on flowers. I dont know and neither do other people so dont try and be 'politically correct' at the detriment of losing advice for youself and other brides considering their music options on the day x

    p.s. sorry for rant.
