We decided that we wanted to get married in the Catholic Church as my h2b is catholic. I am divorced so at present are going through the motions of getting the marriage anulled in the eyes of the Church, this could take a year to do, then i may have to become catholic, which can take another two years. we had planned to get married september 2011, as we did not know how long it could take, it may not take long for the marriage to be anulled, but we do not know, it may not even get anulled at all. Do we just go ahead and book a civil ceremony now and start planning, or do we wait, just in case we book the civil ceremony and then find that we can get married in church, we really do not know what to do, but we feel in limbo as we cannot actually book a proper date yet, or start planning properly. what do you think girls x

It depends on several things... 1) is it important to you that the marriage is recognised by the church straight away, or would a blessing at a later date be ok? 2) Would you both be comfortable having a civil ceremony? 3) Would you be happy to wait as long as it takes to get married in this church?

I'm with Dove on this one, I think you both need to decide just how much you want to get married in Church. I'm not Catholic but I understand it can be really difficult for a divorced non-Catholic to get married in their Church. If you're lucky and your divorce is anulled and you don't need to convert then there's no reason why you can't get married in 2011 but if you start the conversion process now then long term scenario it will be 2012 - do you want to wait that extra year? Is the date you've chosen something important to you, like an anniversary? Important questions! Talk to your priest, he may be able to give you a better idea of what you need to do and he's more likely to know what your chances of anullment are. Do you practice a religion? The Church of England and the Methodist Church are usually more than happy to marry anyone as long as the Reverend think you're getting married for the right reasons - this way you could still get married in Church if a registry office isn't for you. As for civil ceremonies, you can have them pretty much anywhere these days - depending on where you live there are some beautiful hotels that host them.
But I think that you and your h2b need to talk this through and then go talk to your Priest. On the doom and gloom bit (sorry!!) Catholicism does tend to frown on divorce so be prepared for them making it as difficult as humanly possible (I don't think they realise to err is human lol) but if they don't then you can call it a wonderful bonus! Got everything crossed for you xxx

Thank you, I think i am steering towards a civil ceremony as I just want to get a date in place, i know that we can still have a lovely day and then get a blessing later in church, I would like it to be next year, I dont feel as though I can wait an extra year, but I dont want my h2b to settle on a civil ceremony to please me when he actually wants a church wedding:)

I feel your impatience!! If we could then Ross and I would have done it way before now!! You need to speak to him then - there's definitely a compromise here, even if it's a civil next year then a blessing at a later date or like I said, you can get married in Church but doesn't have to be a Catholic one ;)

OMG, you will never guess what, I spoke to my h2b, he said we should go for a civil ceremony, so I rang up the venue, rang up the registrars, and booked a date, its a month earlier than we were initially going to get married, but its all booked, we are getting married. X

i am not sure what will happen about the blessing, it will just be for family members at a later date, i will wear the same dress, and perhaps have a meal back at my house for the family, it wont be anything too expensive, but just so that it can be finalised in the eyes of god.
yes i feel so much happier, now that i have gone ahead and booked it, it feels like a weight has been taken off my shoulders, it feels wonderful i am so so excited, its still 500 days but i just cannot wait, its going to be the best day of my life x

Just deal with the blessing as and when. I totally understand the finalised in the eyes of God thing, whereas I no longer practice Methodism (long story) I do feel it's important that it's recognised by the God I grew up with. You could always do it on your wedding anniversary one year, think that makes it just that little bit more special :) xxx

we will see how it goes, dont know if i will have to be baptised catholic before we can have it blessed, but we will do it as soon as we can, so something else for us to look forward to i guess, once the wedding is over and done with, another day to remember. thanks for all your support x
