I did do a search before starting this, but with so many just entitled "Flowers" I couldn't find the answer I was looking for.
Basically, I had a wander into a couple of florists just to see what styles they do and get some rough prices, and when one florist found out my wedding isn't for another ten months, more or less dismissed me saying flowers are one of the last things I need to do.
So when is a good time to be sorting my flowers? We get married next April and I was looking at having roses & gerberas - both I think are in season then(?) but if it's the last thing I need to organise, when do I put it off til?
On 21st April 2012 I will marry my best friend!

I booked the one's i actually wanted about 3/4 months ago and then paid for them this month. there is no harm is looking plus you want to save the date with them as some places will only do for 2 wedding a day

I made appointments with florists about 8 months before, and booked one seven months before. Although I read in one of the weddign magazines which had a planner thing that you should be looking 9-12 months before xx

Ive booked mine already!...............but i am having silk tho
If you know what you want then i would discuss it with your florist now and pay a deposit so they dont get busy and have your date free! Personally i wouldnt go back to the one that dismissed you because you have 10 months left but thats just me lol
Book and pay deposit now then 5-6 months before discuss again in case youve changed your mind, i would say!

we booked our florist about 4 months before our wedding date and paid a deposit to them to secure the booking.

We booked 11 months in advance, we met ours at a wedding fayre, because they book up quick and some only do a couple of weddings a day and it's even more busy near mothers day or valentines day and Easter, so book when you ready, it's another thing of the list :D

I booked mine about 13 months in advance as when I found the florist I wanted they said to book asap as they get booked up really quickly - especially since we've chosen a really popular month to get married, and a Saturday too. So I've booked and paid a deposit to save the date and am going back for a meeting in October to discuss and finalise what I want (would have been February instead but I need to go in school hols as I'm a teacher and weekends are busy so as they have big weddings and events in all the other hols we had to do it early). So in other words, if you choose which florist you want, book the date so they can't let anyone else take it and have a meeting later in the planning stages to finalise what you'd like :o)

wow thats rude! I hate it when they do that! Some wedding people can be rather rude once they find out you have over a year to go.... I booked mine a couple of months ago but its only because I left it til last. I have had most things done before a year to go. Ignore them hun. Go somewhere else where they will spend time with you - not everyone is like that x

I've got about 12 weeks to go and I've spoken to florist and written a rough idea, planning to go in this month to finalise flowers, I know what I want flowerwise, it's just trying to tie the venue decorator in also have 3 florists, the church, the veune's as we have flowers inc our package and then my venue decorators have florist too, I think I have a plan for them all!

My wonderful friend Charlotte (also on this wedding site), is doing all my flowers for me - we went to the florists at the weekend to order the flowers, 2 weeks before my wedding day :-) I guess if you are having your wedding flowers made up by the florist then you would need a lot more time for them to sort them. I couldn't do any of this without Charlotte, she is a life saver & an amazing friend.

Ooh, a proper mix of answers!
I'll definitely not be returning to the snooty florist, and I'll probably still end up leaving it until next month to officially sort as there are just so many other things on my mind at the moment.
Thanks for setting my mind at ease ladies - good to know I don't have to wait until the very end to get this sorted; knowing me, I'd forget to do it completely!
