We have only recently got engaged and as we have to save to pay for the wedding we are not getting married until March 2015, I am not sure when we should start looking at venues with a view to book, is it too soon ????

We booked ours a year before and they were quite booked up already i would look now so you get the dates you want or if you find the venue that you like and if they dont want to take the booking as so far in advance ask them when you should make the booking

thanks, I think the problem for them is pricing the wedding so far in advance they only tend to have costs for up to 2014

yeah i agree with Karen, there is no harm in having a good look around just now and when you have your heart set on somewhere ask them all the details you need and when to pay deposit.xx

They can get that way. I remember the first time I looked at dresses, I had a ring but no date. The first place was really snooty about it, but others weren't like that. Not all places will react that way to you.
There are also other options. You could always lie about the date, you're just looking so it doesn't matter. Also you can visit during bridal fairs/open days at the venue. That way you get a good look at the venue without the same pressure.

Hi! We booked our venue at the weekend for 4/4/15! It's only a small venue and they said they don't usually book that far in advance, but i think the way they react to you says a lot about how they are going to treat your wedding! They are also keeping 2012 pricing for us as we booked which is amazing!

We had a look round a few and a hotel was really off putting. When I told him the date he laughed and said he couldn't give us a quote that far in advance as prices would change. When I told him that our venue said they would keep the price the same if we booked now he didn't believe me.

Sometimes smaller more intimate venues will be best as they really appreciate your booking rather than obnoxious chain hotels!

When we were looking we said we were looking early to get an idea of budget as we are paying for the wedding ourselves and if they are decent people they will understand.

I'm just trying to refrain from looking at everything else or I will drive myself mad with the wait !

We started looking soon after we got engaged: nearly 3.5 years in advance lol.

I don't think it's too early to start looking: it took me AGES to short-list suitable venues, I trawled through literally hundreds online, which took ages, and got quotes from dozens. So I would start doing the ground-work early, to give you plenty of time.

We then viewed about a dozen; and of those, only 1 would not take a booking for our date, and only 2 (the one that wouldn't take a booking plus one other) couldn't give us a fixed price for our date; the majority were prepared to quote us a fixed price at a very slightly inflated rate from the current price, and several, including the venue we booked, agreed to fix their current prices for us.

A couple of words of advice if you plan to book this far out: first, research the venue, and it's background. We nearly came unstuck when the chain that our hotel was part of went bust. Thankfully, it is still operating, and standards have not dropped since we booked, plus it is busier than ever (so, we feel fairly confident it will be OK for our wedding in 2 years); but in the current economic climate this is something to be aware of. Second, get EVERYTHING written into your contract. We were massively demanding with ours, and insisted on having every single thing we were paying for written in: that include the drinks package, in detail, with the current price; the canapes we had selected; the menu for the wedding breakfast and evening buffet; and all the room prices (we have to book out the whole venue, so there was some room hire to pay, plus all bedrooms must be booked: we agreed prices on rooms, and these too have been written into the contract). If you don't get everything in writing, then you are at their mercy: they can put their prices up, change their packages etc, so, be aware of this.

I would also advise paying by credit card if possible for extra security. Most wedding insurance companies don't let you take out insurance until 2 years before, so this gives you a safety net should anything happen with the venue.

I agree it's never too early to start looking!
2.5 years gives you the perfect amount of time really to have a good look around at some venues, get a feel for what you want, what you don't, what you can afford ect; as most of the time the venue is about a third of your budget!
We started looking after we got engaged in may 2011, looked at about 10 different places and by April 2012 we made a decision and paid our deposit allowing us just over a year to organise everything else :-) x so when we get married I will have been planning for 2 years x

We started looking at venues straight after we got engaged (2 years in advance) & a lot of places were quite skeptical - staff looked at us as if to say "will you even be together in two years time?", some were very rude & just didn't seem interested which put me off straight away - you don't want your wedding venue to be like that do you? Not when you're paying them a heck of a lot of money!!
We finally found our dream venue 13 months before our big day, & we were taken a lot more seriously then. Not saying all places are like that but that was our experience!
Congratulations on your engagement & good luck! X
