My H2B and I booked our wedding in January 2012. We get married in April 2013.

We are having a civil ceremony at a hotel and they said they book and arrange the Registrar. When should i expect to hear from the Registrar? Do we have to go and meet with the Registar beforehand?

I dont want to chase the hotel if i shouldnt expect to hear from the Registrar for a little while, i just had a nightmare last night that we couldnt get married becasue there was no Registrar booked...!

I always thought the couple had to sort out the registrar, due to legal requirements etc but i could be wrong!

I'd ring the hotel and ask if they have spoken to your local registry office, everything went through pretty quick for us and we were asked to go down the the registry office not long after contacting them.

I'm also having a civil ceremony at a hotel and I had to book the registrar myself and pay a deposit. It might be a good idea to ring the registrar and check they have a booking for you. I got a letter confirming my provisional booking and telling me when to give notice.

We had to go directly to our local registry office. We're getting married October this year and didnt have to go until last month. Our certificates were ready for collection on 28th June as we have to produce them to the registrar of the borough where we are getting married. They ask person and legal information and you have to present documents to prove who you are. Ring your local registry office and ask them for advice, but I'm sure you would have to meet them yourself to produce the documents. If you are getting married in a different borough, call the registry for that borough as chances are they have worked with your venue before and can tell you what happens.

    Hope this helps xx

We had to make the booking ourselves, the venue, as far as i am aware, cannot book a registrar. I would call them and check they have the date and time you want free. I had to pay £100 deposit, then as MrsA2B has explained go and give noticed (which we did just before Christmas). We then posted the notice things to the registrar of the district we are marrying in. They send you a pack out maybe 3 months before the wedding, asking about vow choices, witnesses etc, then we sent that back. now, got to call them and pay the rest off, and we are done!

    Yes, This is very unusual.

normally the venue is just that-a venue. It does what it says on the tin. Normally, in civil ceremonies (we're the same), you have to book the registrar yourself.

I think your venue is wrong here.

you have to go and give notice to your local registrar yourself between 3-12 months before the wedding and if you are getting married outside your local area you have to go and speak to the registrar of the area you are getting married in, to araange the venue and times etc.

the venue will be able to provide you with the contact details of the registrar but you have to arrange it as you have to pay.

It varies from celebrant to celebrant. Ours for example is £520. others may be dearer, some may be cheaper. if you marry directly at the registry office, then it'll only be a few pounds.

Ok so I phoned my venue and my planner wasnt to hand so left a message for her to call me.

I then phoned the Registry Office to see what the game-plan was and they said that the venue contact the office and book the registrar for us and then the office write to us inviting us in to give notice and do all the legal stuff. (must be a Kent thing!)

They searched for us on the system and we arent there! The helpful lady at the Registry Office suggest i call my venue to chase.

I cant help but feel a little let down as we booked and paid out deposit back on January.

We have to do it ourselves and you can't do it until a year before if I was you I would phone back again and ask them.
I also wouldn't leave any messages but just keep phoning back.

This is why it's always best to do things like this yourself. Never, ever leave it to a third party. Book it yourself, or find another venue if this carries on.

I didn't think that legally, anyone other than the bride or groom could book the registrar? I agree Clive, I would never have left this to the venue, I'm too much of a control freak!
To give you an idea of cost, we are in Nottingham and its:
    £345 for the ceremony charges
£67.50 EACH to give notice (no more than 12 months before the day)
£5 (i think) on the day for the certificate.

    That sounds about right.

It does sound to me like the venue isn't that well conversed with the proceedings! have they been established long?

I have phoned my venue twice now waiting for the planner to get back to me......
The venue has been established for years which is why i cant understand whats going on. Maybe they are too busy and taken on too many weddings?
    I will keep you posted!

I can't believe in Nottingham it's £67.50 each to give notice!!! In Hereford it's £35 and £350 for a registrar to attend at your venue. I contacted the Registrar to book last September 21 months before our Wedding date because my venue told me they would not accept a booking unless I have a registrar booked. When I explained this to the Registrar she said that she would pencil me in and then I had to confirm 12 months before to keep the booking. H2b is away until October so we will have to wait to give notice til then.

    I can't wait until 29/06/2013

you can book a registrar up to two years in advance but the registrar dont contact you until you send them your notice of marriage and relevant certificates etc. I would ask the venue to let you know when they have made contact so you know they are booked.

cant wait to be Mrs Evans less than 3 weeks woooo

You have to go an give notice to the registrar at your local registry office and if you are getting married in the same district you can book your registrar with them too. If you are getting married outside of your registry district, you need to book your registrar to come to your hotel as soon as possible as they get booked up fast then once that's all booked go and give notice at your local registry office.

you will both need to be interviewed by the registrar, the venue cannot do that on your behalf......they ask questions etc and this is to stop illegal marriages taking place.

i am just off the phone with the registry office. She said the fee is £144 I am assuming this means ours is £72 each? she also said it is set to go up. Got our date sorted though, and she is holding it until the details are all sorted out :) she didn't even mention thge price for the registrar :/ I was mainly just ringing to make sure the date was free.
