    hi everyone
Im new to this and am unsure how to go about things. We have found a reception venue we like and have been asked to pay a deposit. It doesnt seem right to me to pay a deposit until weve seen a contract,is this how it works.

Most places give the contract once you've paid the deposit hunni! But if your unsure you can ask to see it first before handing over the cash

When I booked my venue we viewed it, and they pencilled our name in on the date we wanted, and we received a contract in the post and had to make a despoti payment within 2 weeks :)
I would definitely want a contract before paying though

I got a copy of the contract before signing anything or handing over any cash; I personally wouldn't pay out anything until I knew exactly what I was paying for. I'd also suggest paying by credit card if possible as it affords you more protection.

My venue probably hated me lol because I had literally everything, including food and drink packages (which were bespoke) written into the contract; I didn't want to pay out a lot of money only for them to try to up prices/make changes nearer the time.

When we booked we filled in a booking form and they confirmed the date was available, we then payed a deposit and a week later received our contract through the post. The only thing we got when we paid the deposit was a receipt and a confirmation email. x

We did the same as JackieFC, they pencilled us in, then when i said i wanted to go ahead with it, they sent us the contract in the post. They were really good, as they normally expect the deposit inside 2 weeks, but i explained we wouldn't have access to the funds for another month, and they were happy to extend the time, while still keeping our booking.

I got my contract once I'd handed over the money. We reviewed it together, I signed, she signed, took a photocopy for herself and I took it that day.

    I can't wait until 29/06/2013
The day I marry the man of my dreams!

We paid the deposit before we left our venue and by the time we got home we had our contract via email.

It all depends on the venue. I knew straight away that it was perfect for us.

We negotiated for a few weeks over drinks package, room prices and discount so when i finally paid the deposit i had all the emails confirming prices anyway and then the contract followed.
