The package that we have chosen for our wedding at our chosen venue cost us £4500 and to be fair we got quite slot included in that, one of the things being "complimentary main function room hire" now as we are having our ceremony, wedding breakfast and evening reception all in one room we took that to mean that the cost if hiring out that room is included in the package, however we had our final meeting last week were we had to give our final numbers etc. We knew we would have to pay a bit extra as the package only caters for 40 day and 80 evening guests and we have more and after calculating it we got it to be around £2800 that we would owe. So Friday we get our event sheet and final invoice, expecting it to be around that amount buy no....£4009 WTF. They have charged us £405 for a 5% increase on prices from when we booked and £750 for civil ceremony room hire. We assumed that this was included in the "complimentary main function room hire" as stated in the package. Have i assumed wrong? What would you take it to mean? Even if I have assumed wrong £750 is a bit steep considering we are already in that room for the rest if the wedding x

id phone them up and ask them what complimentary main function room hire is, thats allot of money to find in 6 weeks.
i would of thought it was the room hire included.

I've emailed our wedding co ordinator but I've had an automatic reply to say she isn't it till wed. I'm gonna try and contact the manager. I know it is, we've got £3000 because that's what we were expecting but Christ knows were the rest is coming from. H2B seems to think that when we were shown around before we booked the manager said it was included but he has left now so don't know what to do about that.

Have you checked your contract to see if it states that the price was the price you'd pay at the end?

Usually for them to charge you the 5% increase theyd have said something like "subject to increase for year 2012" or something along those lines!

They should have shown you the cost for the room on ur original contract!

I have just checked the contract and it does say under Room Hire " there is a civil ceremony room hire charge of £750" and it also says which we knew about "a 5 % increase will be expected year on year" not too fussed about the 5% as we knew about that but we honestly thought the room hire for ceremony was included

We are all in the one room too but have to pay £350 for the ceremony bit and £550 for the meal/reception :-(
Its ridicolous what they can get away charging but unfortantly it is understandable :-(

I have to pay for function room hire and ceremony room hire. My ceremony room is £250 and the lady who owns my venue says that is the lowest she can go to cover her ceremony licence and make a small profit.

Make sure any communication you have is by email. You can't prove what's said in a phone call but emails are in black and white.

Function room and ceremony room, although sometimes the same room, are charged seperately. It is VERY misleading and frustrating but the same thing happened to me when I asked for a subtotal so far, there it was, lurking, "ceremony room hire £450" ¬_¬ and yes as Shirleygirly said, email, for your own records and peace of mind xx

Looks like I'm just gonna have to suck it up and pay it then lol it's just cos we weren't expecting it. I do think £750 is a bit steep though. Do you think it's worth trying to get it cheaper. I always get confirmation by email it just so happens that on this "expensive" occasion I didn't and that was probably because we were only told it at our show round and when we saw what was included in the package we just oh yeah it's all included :-(

play dumb and say you are querying the £750 as to you it reads that the room hire was included for the whole day for functions. When they explain it to you, say you hadn't budgeted for that and look sad. Throw 'thats a bit misleading' around here and there' and let the guilt do the discounting. I always get free stuff by looking sad apparently because I have 'sad brown eyes' LOL xx

I wouldn't mind but it's only being used by us for half a bleeding hour lol and it's not like they don't make enough money out of weddings, they've charged us an extra £600 just to have beef instead of chicken for the wedding breakfast, £5.50 for a bowl of crisps for the evening buffet and it's £18 per bottle of wine....they should walk round in striped jumpers and balaclava's, Robbing B******s. I shall take your advice and play dumb, I'm good at that lol x

    That is criminal!

I know venues do charge extra if you have your civil ceremony there but they're usually between £250 and £350 .............not £750!

Hope you get it sorted hun.

They can't hire it out to anyone else can they! So if you're having your whole venue there that seems ridiculous, especially this close they just assume you'll pay anything! So i'd band around that you might have to look elsewhere for ceremony just to see teh reaction as that's mad! xx

I wish mine was only £750 instead its triple that £2500 but that includes the use of there private chapel for the ceremony and the ballroom and conservatory for the wedding breakfast and evening reception, if we had just decided on the ceremony there it would of been costing £1200, if its in your contract i dont think they will do much about it as you are supposed to read it all through before you sign anything so you have really signed saying you agree to the terms and conditions, hope you do manage to get something sorted the last thing you want this close to the wedding is un expected costs. xx

im paying 350 to cover ceremony licence fees, but thats it, my venue doesnt actually charge for the venue, just the food and drinks etc i would def say that u were under the impression that you didnt have to pay any fees for the function room as it was complimentary and if they say its for the ceremony then i would ask well then do i get another room which is my complimentary room then? as thats misleading to say u get something for free or complimentary when ur still paying for that room anyway. I dread to think what the price would be if it wasnt! i hope u manage to sort out some kind of deal, and def put in there that u didnt allow for this in ur budget and now u dont know what to do, they will have to come up with a solution or knock a bit off the price etc good luck! x

She rang me today and they said they will do the room for £250....RESULT x

I do know that the main function room is different to the room that the ceremony is held. so while they are not charging you for your reception room, by law they have to charge for the ceremony room. But £750 is steep!

Plus there will be a £400+ charge from the registrar to attend ......its actually very expensive to get married in a hotel, more than a church nowadays. then the £3.50 for the marriage certificate on the day.....and the £67 you already paid when you registered to marry!

I know that if they use a certain room for the ceremony, then nothing is allowed to be changed or moved for 2 hours......by law.
Of course if your ceremony room and reception room is one BIG room, then this rule might not apply, but some hotels we looked at told us that if we get married in room A, then we cant eat in there for 2-3 hours because they are not allowed to move anything to get it ready for a reception. so have always been told that they meal would be served in room B.....and there isnt a charge for that room.

this seems very expensive! We were told we couldn't use a room for the ceremony if it was going to be used to consume food and drink either before or after the ceremony, so we are hiring two rooms. We got an all inclusive package deal which includes quite a lot, and the breakdown of the costs she sent through to me shows the hire for the two rooms is only £220.... so for them to charge an additional £750 seems crazy?!? x
