I know there was a recent thread about canapes, but I wanted to do a poll to see what you would prefer if you were one of my guests.

Our ceremony is at 1.30pm and our wedding breakfast is at a different location and won't be until about 4.00pm-4.30pm. We were originally going to have canapes and champagne (i don't even really know what canapes are), straight after the ceremony and then have the photo's taken. I have received a quote and to be honest I think it is quite expensive £12 pp and this is for 4 items per person. I have looked into other options and would love anyone's suggestions and any problems you could foresee? I have attached a photo of my venue, so you can see if you think it would go. If I had posh sandwiches and mini cakes I would buy the vintage 3 tier cake stands. I haven't decided yet if we are having champagne or sangria.

I have decided that what ever nibbles we do have I will buy them myself and hire two people to serve the guests and top peoples drinks up. I'm going to buy all the alcohol from Tesco's and buy the food from Iceland and buy large silver platters and hire all the glasses.

Yup I agree with posh sandwiches - I love the idea of the ice cream van but think I'd prefer something savoury as a guest just to see me through to the meal, otherwise it would spoil it

    posh sandwiches hmmm

maybe cream cheese with a nice ham.
or prawn, chicken tikka, turkey with a posh stuffing - just thinking about the masses! You want decent sandwiches but with fillings people would actually want.
I take it ur doing ur own catering then? Ur venue ok with it?
I liked the idea of little cakes. Thats just me and my sweet tooth talking tho :0) x

Sandwiches, without doubt; I don't have a sweet tooth, and I think people won't eat much of the sweeter items eg most people would have one small cake. Plus, I don't think cakes and alcohol necessarily mix lol, esp if guests have an empty stomach.

My ideal option though would be sandwiches (and incidentally, I don't think you need fancy fillings, I'd stick to simple ones that are tried and tested), and maybe mini-scones with clotted cream and jam. I would also go for champagne over sangria if you go with that option, I think sangria would suit nibbles more (eg tapas-style food, like olives, meats, etc)

The only one I came up with was egg & cress (definitely no crusts) and should I use white and wholemeal?

With those timings I don't think you even need nibble to be honest as people will have had time for lunch before they come and then you are serving tea at a reasonable hour. I love idea of scones and cream though!!

My wedding is at 1:30 and we aren't going to eat until 5:30 I was happy with that but my family have said people can't go that long without eating - most of them will have travelled from across the country. Thing is canapes are over £1000 I think it's a stupid price and a waste of money :(

That is a rip off! Do you have to use the venue for your canapes? Couldn't you just have chocolate covered strawberries or something? They sell them at Iceland for a £1 a box

No everything we want we have to have from them - don't ask the place is a joke but we would loose too much to pull out! They won't let us have corkage or anything

The venue where I am having my wedding breakfast are only charging us £24.50 ph for a 3 course meal, but £12ph for 4 canapes. Luckily where we are having the ceremony you have to organise all your drinks and food yourself, so I think we are going to do it ourselves. There's no way I can justify paying that, so I'm going to hire 2 people for about 3 hours and bung them £30 each. I will even provide them with a black skirt or trousers and a smart shirt and dicky bow.
