I am a fussy eater and dont particularly fancy any of the starters my venue is offering on my package however they will let me choose anything from the higher or lower package instead.
But what should we choose for our guests (we have to choose 2 for the menu tasting)-

    1. Butternut squash soup with roasted butternut
    2. Leaf salad with black pudding, crispy pancetta, mushroom, poached egg, croutons in a bit of a stack.
    3. Feta and watermelon salad
    4. Smoked salmon with creme fraiche something or other.

I am tempted to give guests number 2 as, as a fussy eater I know that I would just pick out the black pudding and eat the bits I do like.

EDIT - I HAVE ADDED A POLL FOR YOU HUN ,EASIER TO SEE RESULTS- LALA "MOD" BUNNI

Ooo, they are interesting! To be honest, black pudding is a real specialist thing, some people love it, but a lot of people just hate the idea of it. So I'd avoid that one. The other three all sound lovely. When is your wedding? If it's winter, I'd put the soup as one of the options. Smoked salmon is very popular. Feta and watermelon sounds lovely too.... I'm not helping am I?! :) Winter wedding 1 & 4, summer wedding 3 & 4.

I think 2 is a bit (as December) said specialist - black pudding and egg and mushrooms are things that people get divided on.
If it was me 3 or 4 but 4 having fish might not be everyone's cup of tea

So we think feta and watermelon is an acceptable thing? I thought that sounded odd.

Main is roast beef and dessert will be chocolate orange torte with white chocolate sauce, if that helps.

I'd go two, as people could pick out e black pudding, and it's a bit different.

I'm always a bit disappointed if I get soup as a starter, particularly in summer. It can also be a bit heavy if you're having quite a heavy main.

The melon and feta sounds nice and refreshing if it's a summer wedding.

Salmon we avoided as I think it's one of those things that people either love or hate - and all h2bs family hate it! Xx

Well, I am really fussy too so I'd only go for the soup!
But the melon and feta is a great summer choice and if people don't like feta they can just eat the melon! (As I would do! Haha)

Salmon is always a popular choice (again, not for me!)

    Xx

Im not a fan of feta...
    hate black pudding
    cant stand butternut squash
and salmon akes me physically sick....

However i love water melon (any melon really, but watermelon has to be my favourite)

So yeh I would say watermelon & feta!

I think I'd go for options 1 or 3 (depending on time of year) and 2. I know three very fussy eaters, and they would be happy picking out the bits that they didn't like out of option 2. Feta and watermelon sounds strange to me (although I don't like melon, so that might explain it), but it would be light if you're having a summer wedding. Again, the soup can be hit and miss, as lots of people don't like squash (although I love it, but I make it all the time, and I don't know if it would feel special enough to me). I would miss the salmon, because again people like or loath it (I like salmon, but not when it's smoked). I don't think I've helped in any way, sorry. Lol.

Personally out of all those 'different' options I'd pick watermelon and feta... As I don't like any of the others and I find soup v boring...

    wow that's an interesting selection!!

    1. Butternut squash soup with roasted butternut
i love soup, though i think a lot less people actually like soup than i actually think, especially when its not tomato or chicken lol. But i love pumpkin soup and i don't think this is much different

    2. Leaf salad with black pudding, crispy pancetta, mushroom, poached egg, croutons in a bit of a stack.
This would definaltely be a possible, as other than the black pudding, i like the rest and im sure people could just pick it off if they didn't like it. though the egg part seems a bit odd to.... i do LIKE egg... but it just seems like a breakfast dish albeit, other than the black pudding a very NICE brekkie dish

    3. Feta and watermelon salad
watermelon is always a safe option, but again, the feta cheese... with melon!?

    4. Smoked salmon with creme fraiche something or other.
As long as its not raw (im abit thick, is smoked raw or cooked??) then this could also be a safe option i think

i don't really think ive been much help, but i think id go with ones that would be safest, that could be picked apart. i do really realy like the soup, but i dunno if a lot of other people would...

I'm a fussy eater too - and honestly wouldn't like any of those choices..
but I'd go for 2 and probably ask for it to be egg salad with black pudding 'on the side' or something

Soup. Black pudding is a love or hate dish so I'd skip it. I'd skip the watermelon and feta because it sounds stomach churning unless it was unripe watermelon which is pretty bland, but then again what's the point of that? I like smoked salmon but I'd worry that most guests wouldn't like it.

Whereas I think the black pudding would be amazing personally, I know many would gag at the sound, and sight! You'll never win with everyone but you can try your best. Ask your nearest and dearest and find out whst are definite nos and work from there. Prioritize you and your close families' requirements over fussy friends.

I'm not sure we've been much help. We all seem to like different things. I would focus on what you want - you can't please everyone, and tbh, the rest of your menu sounds devine. If someone doesn't like the starter, the rest will make up for it. Don't stress yourself out over it.

    Thanks Angela and Velcro.

I guess I'll just pick either the watermelon or the black pudding salad thing- since I wont be eating it, it doesnt really matter to me haha. My parents are paying for our reception and have said that they will pay any supplements for the top table to have different to everyone else.My dad at their wedding apparantly had a different starter to everyone else.
I think you are right Angela, there will be roast beef and a veggie option and a gorgeous sounding dessert plus they will be getting canapes beforehand which I am sure we will pick 4 things most people will like AND then later they can have a bacon or sausage buttie! So im sure if they dont like one part of the meal it wont be a massive issue.

    Thanks for all your posts.

I went back to the venue and asked about their veggie options and whether they could do those for all guests as they had an option for a trio of raviolis - roasted tomato/ garlic/ basil which sounded nice. They said they cant do them for so many people as they are so fragile (?!) however they said their popular choices are:

Boxed brie with walnuts and honey
    or
    A spicy oven baked burrito

Would one these options be more favourable to the salmon/black pudding salad stack/ soup / watermelon and feta salad?

You venue is offering quite divisive choices! Black pudding is a real love or hate kinda dish!
They sound all lovely choices and not like the typical wedding food you get at all which is great. As much as i'd probably like to eat your options than I would the ones my venue has offered (tom soup, pate, fish cakes etc) part of me is quite glad my venue is offering a few "run of the mill" kinda boring but most people will eat choices! It would make more sense for them to offer a more standard soup, like tomato or summer veg that way there was a more "simple" and vegetarian option - butternut squash I personally find a bit sickly!

I'm not sure what a burrito is but I love brie! I would maybe go for the brie or the feta and water melon ('m a veggie myself) as how can people not eat melon! It pretty much tastes of nothing so you can't fall out with it! But my h2b would go for black pudding or the salmon!!

What a dilema! Sorry, i've just realised i've been no help at all!! I would say don't go black pudding as most people I know don't really like it and it's a bit controversial.

    Good luck

    Lizzy. x

Yes they are all a bit out of the ordinary aren't they. The venue has 3 packages and we chose the middle one.
The lower option does have pâté but even that soup is fancy "duo of soups served in the same dish"?!

Burito is a tortilla filled with veg and spicy salsa covered in cheese and oven baked.

I agree - its a fantastic menu choice, but e downside is its extra hard for you to choose something for everyone!

Re the new options - I'd love either, but wonder if a burrito might be a bit heavy before a roast dinner? Xx
