Were getting married at 3pm and after the service, photos and travelling to reception venue there's going to be about 2 hours before the dj arrives. We can go into the reception anytime as we've booked it for the day. My family can go home get changed then go to reception at 7ish whereas h2bs family are travelling over an hrs journey so they need go straight to venue. I don't want them to just be sat there doing nothing but drinking.
Need ideas on what I can do to stop them being bored but I'm on a budget

We are also having a break but its not untill after the meal... if everyone is going straight to the reception venue (well majoirty) it gives you chance to mingle & actually have a chat with them without all the music blaring.
Maybe look at some sort of entertainment? Were having a magician at 5pm till 7pm to help too :)

Were not having a sit down meal just evening buffet. Letting guests mingle sounds good. As our families have never met except my parents and his mum.lol

In theory mingling always sounds good but if I know people - nine times out of 10 they tend to just talk to who they know! The magican sounds like a good idea.

But some cheap things to do might be things like - games like giant jenga or bowls if there is space outside to do it in, or inside could you put some photo albums of the two you on a table for guest to look through? Yesterday I was commenting on a post that suggested an indoor games table - dominos, cards etc there was a picture of a really cute sign near them that said something about "if you don't fancy a dance..."

Could you mock up a photo booth guest book? I've a couple of brides on here are doing that fairly cheaply with a digital camera, a bunch of cheap costumes like hats and fake moustaches etc, I really wanted to do this with a scrap book and an old fashion polariod camera but as the film is no longer made for them it is super expensive for a big scale project like that! I'd considered using my digital camera and a portable printer but not sure about that as it seems like a bit of a faff for the guests.

Hope there are some more good ideas out there as i'm super paranoid about people being bored! There was a classic example of that on Four Weddings this lunch time! x

What with the time it takes to take the group photos, travel, and to get their first drink they won't be waiting that long. If they're at a hotel they may decide to get changed, rest, & freshen up. It isn't a huge amount of time & personally I wouldn't worry about it. People have smartphones & the social ones will be glad to have a chance to catch up with each other.

A quiz or bingo is a good idea to entertain people. Or little table top games, connect 4 or draughts.

Is it a summer wedding? Has the area got grounds? We had a 2 hour gap at my cousins wedding and it was lovely as beautiful grounds so the kids ran around and adults milled around drinking pimms and a nice afternoon to be sat outside. You could also get some giant outdoors games for poeple to do.... like Jenga, Hopscotch, etc xx

Do they have a sound system? You could make a CD to play until the DJ gets there x x

we had some local unsigned bands in to do some music and it went down really well but they were late so everyone had an hour with no entertainment but we were outside and just chilled out in the sunshine

Check with your local universities there are always bands and singers trying to earn extra cash while they study, could be a cheaper way to get some entertainment.
