Hi all... There doesn't seem to be a thread for (that I can find) for what questions to ask the caterer..
My uncle holds maaany many functions (it's r venue too) and has recommended me someone but I don't really know what to ask or what prices are good etc... Our caterer is coming to see is soon and I don't wanna look silly..

    * Where is the food prepared?
    * Who prepares the food?
    * Do you offer menu tastings?
    * How many weddings/events do you cater on a given day?
    * If the food is prepared off site (away from the actual wedding venue), how do you make sure the food stays warm and fresh?
    * Does your staff help with setup and break down of tables and chairs for items not provided by your business? If so, is there an additional fee?
    * Who will be supervising and troubleshooting the day of the wedding?
    * How many servers will there be?
    * What will members of your staff wear?
    * What happens with the extra food?
    * What do you need from us to secure the date?
    * When are the deposits due?
    * Is there a discount for children?
    * Is there an extra charge for food substitutions? If so, how much?
    * Do you cut cake even if it is made by someone else?

An important question for us was "would you provide a meal at sundown" to cater for those guests we had who were sitting for ramadan

I would ask if there are alternatives available for those who do not eat meat/have intolerances/allergies.

We had a sit down meal and our guests had a choice of 2 starters, 2 starters (chicken or beef) and 2 puds according to our package.

As we had 2 veggies, a nut allergy sufferer and a Muslim guest attending I asked if they catered for veggies and was there any additional cost for someone to have a veggie meal instead. I was told that it was fine for people to have a veggie option and at no extra cost so I put all 3 veggie options, plus the meat options on our guests choices. We had quite a few meat eats pick a veggie option because it was something different.

We also made them very aware who's course was who's in regard to those poeples so that they were not prepared near nuts/non halal/meat dishes.

Ask if they provide linen/napkins/crockery etc for you to use and if so what is the cost involved - It might be cheaper for you to buy bits like this yourselves.

If there are people serving, will they wait on tables? If they will wait on tables, will they serve bottles of wine you provide (if you are) to your guests by the glass rather than leave the bottles on the tables. At our wedding they did this and it worked really well. That way, you didnt end up with people who don't drink wine having 3 full bottles on their table, a table of people who dont drink white/red having 2 full bottles on their table and no rose left. It also meant any bottles we had bought that were left over from the daytime were used in the evening. Its also quite nice for guests to be served their wine by someone doing the job rather than leaning across tables etc for bottles. Plus less chance of it getting spilt/wasted
