I'm seriously considering doing my own make up, I've seen plenty of tutorials on youtube to practice with but I just have no idea what products to use. Can anyone recommend any? I don't have a decent shop round here with a make up counter, all I can think is John Lewis? Also I'm wondering how you'll be prepping your face before hand, facials etc. Any feedback would be great :)

It's hard to recommend products as it's best to try out some and see what works best for you. Sometimes one person will love this mascara so you go and buy it and find out it's horrible on your lashes. Some people prefer and wetter formula and some people prefer a dryer one! It's hard to recommend things like blush too as you have to go with what colour compliments your skin tones, or foundation really depends on your skin type!
What I do recommend though is primers! Eye shadow primers and face primers- a definite must for wedding make up to keep it in place and lasting all day! A light dusting of translucent powder is something else I'd recommend, stops foundation/concealer from sliding off and prevents shininess! Oh and brushes, decent brushes can make all the difference to application!

I'm not a qualified make-up artist, but I do work with one and I know that in order to get really good make-up that will last the day you will end up paying quite a bit, a mascara is around £20, foundation £30 etc etc, so unless you'll wear it again then it can be more cost effective to have it done professionally. If it's not about the money, but purely because you still want to look like "you" then it is worth taking a trip to somewhere that does have several counters and get advice from each of them. Holly is right though, primer and finishing powder are so important!
As for skin care, this I am qualified in. Facials do make a real difference to the skin, and you should look at having 3 or four of them, two weeks apart. The last one should be one week before. Ask around in your area recommendations, and see if you a discount for booking a course.

Im just wearing the make up I wear everyday. I want to look like me and I love my make up so I dont see why I should use anything different. I use Elizabeth Arden foundation and bourjois eye-shadow, and a good water proof mascara.
i've decided i'm doing my own and I'm going to do it the way I always do, except maybe take a bit more time and use a bit more! I want to look like me, not some random woman walking down the aisle :o) I hardly ever wear make-up either, and not much when I do so I don't want someone else to do it and cover me in slap that I won't feel comfortable in. I'm using dream matte mousse foundation, Barry M eye shadow, some compressed powder that I can't remember the brand of, Maybelline mascara and a mosaic blusher by the Make Up Academy, I think! Nothing fancy or expensive, but its stuff I always use, makes me look nice and I feel comfortable in it, which i consider to be very important xxx

I've been putting my face on practically every day for about 16 years. Not in a million years I would suddenly want someone else do it on my wedding day - I want to look like me and not in fancy dress. I'll be using what I use every day and it always lasts a whole day. Here and there a touch up if I feel the need to. I use:
Any anti-wrinkle cream after washing my face Nivea tinted moisturizer Maybelline cover stick (under my eyes and between my eyes as I have a red patch there) Any compact powder (I always buy a cheap one off the bay) Rimmel dark brown eye brow liner (I pencil my eyebrows) Maybelline Mascara - one of the black and white end ones Pink blusher (currently got a Helena Rubinstein one, was a gift)
That's it, done in under 10 minutes. For the wedding I'll add my evening touches - eyeliner, ivory eyeshadow and bright red lipstick. I have some cheap liquid eyliner and a cheap eye shadow but I really like the Boots No 7 range of lipsticks - they last forever and don't run.
I do have to say I worry about smooching with red lipstick? But I don't want to go without....

At the minute i'm actually using a lipstick I got from the pound shop, not a brand make but I love it so much. Just do whatever you like, I don't think you need to spend a lot of money on it. if I was to buy my make up at once would maybe be £30 and it lasts so long, and all day.

Ahhhh ok, so for the price I'd pay for a decent brand of make up it's prob worth while in just going with a professional! Have just asked around on facebook and it turns out a few of my friends do make up in their spare time and one gave me a quote for £70 with the trial which is sounding ok to me! Thanks all for the advice girlies :)

hey... might sound old fashioned (my 92 year nan actually got me on to it-and still wears it)... but lauder is fantastic. they have a foundation called double wear and it wont budge unless you take it off. its a little thicker than your high street brands- you can mix a little of a thinner one in if its easier. i always used to use it on a nights out because even after a long night of dancing and getting all hot you can still have your picture took and there is no shine in the wrong places and looks wonderful. they also have some fab mascaras too which are very lengthy to lashes. like the others said though these products do cost more. try the make up counters in your local department store (im goign to be using the one in my local one just because of this foundaton), personally i trust their products more than what some professionals use. have fun playing with all the make up :0) xxx

I'm off to get some advice at John Lewis tomorrow as I use Bare Escentuals but only use the powder foundation and blusher and would like to know how to use more of there products.

fairy-cakes, the E.L. mascara is one of the best I've used. I'd definitely visit the E.L. stand if there is one. They now do lightweight foundations too.

I've had a lot of issues with professional makeup in the past! So much so, that I do my own foundation before I go, and just ask them to do my eyes!
For long lasting foundation I highly recommend Estee Lauder Double Wear or Clarins Everlasting. Both last all day, even without a primer. But since starting to use a primer I wouldn't do my makeup without it! Smashbox do a great primer that contains silicone and gives you the loveliest even complexion.
Try not to use a cream eyeshadow, as I find they cake and can look terrible. So long as you have a decent foundation on, powder eyeshadow should last all day.
I use Max Factor False lash mascara, it doesn't clump, and you can also get a waterproof one in it...
Go round the makeup counters to see if you can get any little samples to try at home.

I will be using maybelline foundation, the age control one thats like a magic marker for your face (cant remember what its called and its upstairs i cant be bothered to go look) I use it on a general day to day, and for special occassions i use the clear underbase that goes with it for a really matt flawless finish. I will then be using avon for my eyes and lipstick etc.....
CommentAuthorloustew2012
its going to be avon stuff for me, its the only makeup products that dont irritate my eyes and skin plus at my trial ive asked my friend to use those products rather than hers. she is going to get me some decent brushes though. i dont really wear makeup unless im going out or interviews etc so im going to try see how it lasts for a full day....xxx
All the ways of my life id rather be with you.
Theres no way without you.

Avon lipstick is lovely!! I'm addicted to it, you can get ones that tingle a bit coz they taste slightly minty :)

you've got some time, buy some bits and practice see how long they last etc but one thing I never go without nowadays when I wear makeup that I never knew existed until I got engaged is primers...makes such a big difference!!!

i personally use yaby and obbsessive compulsive cosmetics they are so amazing and with the occ primer last about 15 hours without smuding or moving. i shall post a pic up in my album to show u what they look like as i did a trial of my wedding make up to go on a night out and it lasted from 4pm till 2am when i eventually took it off :-)

I have mostly benefit make up, with some estee lauder thrown in. Best buy is Clarins make up fixer, which is a mist spray to keep it all in place and makes it last longer. xx
