My wedding is going to be a black and white with hints of red vintage type theme. I am having rockabilly dresses or swing dresses for the bms and 50's (or 40's - its debatable lol) hairstyles. Havent really based the whole thing round the 50's but I am huge fan of 50's music and I am in a rock and roll band - so maybe I'll get the boys up for a song lol. the 50's was the best decade! Closely followed by the 60's....lol xxxxxxxxxxxx

My dress is in my photo album :-) have a look - its not 50's but its quite vintage looking. My BM dresses are Pretty Kitty dresses. Good thing about the swing dresses is they look good on anyone of any size so they totally suit all my bms :-) If you need any links give us a shout :-) My bm dresses only cost £27 each

Thank you :-) Its a copy - only cost 185. I got the bm dresses from am-azon from 'pretty kitty' but also try 'hell bunny'. Best bet is to type "50's themed wedding" into google and see what the images brings up :-)
To be honest I dont have a very interesting theme but I want it to look really classy and timeless - I've just gone for black and white so far with hints of lace and red roses. I got wooden roses from the bay of e to use for the centrepieces (joblot of 100 for £12.99), black table runners for 8.99 from the bay of e, rose petals for the tables (like a £1 a box!). Ooooh I also got black and white damask balloons for about £3 which Im going to use for round my B&W sweetie table and cupcake tower :-)
Most of my shopping comes from am-azon and the bay of e :-)
Hope this helps.

We're having a 50s theme - sort of. It's not a concious theme but I am a vintage gal and dress up in 40s or 50s gear every day.
My dress will be a 50s dress, but I wear dresses like that anyway. The 6 BMs got each a different colour and are free to pick any dress aslong as it's swingy, in the given colour and has white polka-dots. There are tons of very reasonably priced dresses like that on the bay! They will all wear a white petticoat and white shoes - I'll have a red petticoat and the shoed Rockabilly chick mentioned :-) The sky blue ones with the bright red heart! In my pics...
We will have lots of polka dots around, very colourful everything and of course every vintage wedding needs moustaches on sticks :-) I've started a thread 50s/Vintage DIY (something like that, search engine will find it) - all my ideas and decorations in there!
Regarding classiness - I guess everyone has a different perception. I don't strive for classiness but I also don't consider this as tacky because tackiness contains bling - for me, just my opinion :-)

Rockabilly chick - your sentence about that ut's debatable if it's 40s or 50s hair made me laugh. Same here. I suppose it's modernised pin-up hair - 40s rolls with ponytails for the girls. Haven't quite decided on myself. I wear victory rolls every day so maybe I want something different for the wedding - I bought a hat already, if I wear this hat then I will have one roll on the side, one covered by the hat and a rolled up back. But that hat was an impulse buy, I actually always wanted a huge bow sitting like a hairband on my head with a birdcage veil. If I will do that (which I think) then I'll have a typical 50s set and no rolls.

The colours you mentioned are very typically American diner. I wanted this at first as a theme paired with retro sweets and a big candy buffet. But this was too kitschy and too American for my h2b so I toned it down and suggested the very classic tea-stained vintage shabby chic style but luckily he didn't like this either. So in the end I told him to sod off with his vetos and we have agreed on middle grounds - we will have 50s kitsch but not the all American approach. :-)

I love retro and vintage themes - i think if you do the 50s right it will be extremely classy Im having a vintage-ish theme but a bit like some of the others its more due to me picking things with a vintage feel rather than setting out to be vintage I cant wait to see pics from some of these 40-50s weddings :)

CommentAuthorRockabilly chick
Little Miss Bossy, how do you do your hair in that style? I have really long hair and I've never been able to do much more than a standard quiff type thing. I'd love to be able to do my hair like that! See the rockabilly crowd use the 40's hairstyles and some 40's clothes but its all about 50's music (and later rockabilly stuff too) so at first I was confused but the style I like best is the 40's pin up style. I want my bms to have that hairdo and I think they are all happy with it but have booked them a hair trial to see how it goes :-)
Dead excited about seeing everyones photos!
Mine probably wont look particularly 50's in the venue cos everything is just black and white but I've got a 50's classic rover MG for my photos - a friend of ours bought it a while ago and said he could use it. Now I just have to convince my man not to wear a kilt....lol. A nice suit would definately fit the theme more :-)

MrsHardy - I have zero budget, really zero. A 50s theme is probably the cheapest theme - I buy everything off the bay, my dress was £30. It just takes research and collecting over a few months - but car boot sales etc really don't cost much.
Rockabilly Chick - I do it every day, so I am so used to it and fast, I run a vintage style blog with the occassional hair tutorial or just exhibiting pics :-) Half of my bridesmaids are in Austria, where I am from, so we can't really have a trial for them, but I am sure they will be all fine as I know they all like the style and I don't want them to feel in fancy dress so they can have it toned down if they don't feel comfortable with it. A friend is a vintage hair stylist and she's going to help me with the girls on the day. I'll pay her in goods (I make stuff for hairstyling). :)
See no budget required! :-)

We do Smothering Me and Big Bad Handsome man in the band - I love singing those songs. So much fun. I can do a basic quiff but not sure about the perfect curl... do you wear a roller or tongs for that?
xxxxxxxxxxx
CommentAuthorLittleMissBossy
No I just roll around my finger and pin it down, Gwen Stefani used to sport the same hairstyle in the 90s. But it is much easier if it's curled before, much easier to handle, escpecially poker straight hair like mine.

I love the 50's style. I have two rock-n-roll dresses which are so versatile. With the right hair and flowers, they'd look the part as bridesmaid dresses as well. I don't know if we are allowed to post links to external sites here (I only just joined). If so, I am happy to look up the links for you if you are interested. I got them on Amazon.

The ones I have are probably the same as those of Rockabilly Chick - they are Pretty Kitty. I have a Hell Bunny underskirt that cost about £30. The dresses look really nice with or without the underskirt.

They could be! I prefer the hell bunny dresses in general but those pretty kitty ones are perfect for bm dresses :-) Im teaming them with a red shrug or bolero - something along those lines with red mary jane shoes :-)
