My better half works as a prison officer, we have decided to have our wedding at the prison officers club which is an old medieval barn on 24th May 2014.

We are planning to have our wedding in a church then moving on to the medieval barn/prison officers club.

The prison officers club is situated right next to the prison although my htb has assured me the prisoners can not see us, we have to decorate and cater our own venue etc... With our venue we also have a prison museum which has everything to do with the prison and what prisoners make etc (you're only ever allowed in here under the governors invite). However they are opening this up for our guests so was thinking in between changing over from daytime to night time my htb could showthem around and explain things etc... Would that be interesting or yawn boring?

    Our venue is here

    **********************

    **********************

I guess my main question here is **is anyone having a buffet for daytime? And what do you personally think of this?**

    Thank you.

Well this is different! Also what a cost effective way of planning your wedding. Once it's all decorated I'm sure prisons next door will be the last thing on your mind!

I think there can be quite a long lul between ceremony & reception & I for one struggled to think of ideas to fill this, so why not have a museum tour? Those that don't want to go don't have to & it would definitely set your wedding apart from the rest.

I assume as your wedding is at your h2b's workplace your guests can easily go home after the ceremony & return for the reception if the prison thing isn't their style? Xx

We'd be having a buffet during the day and then a hog roast on the evening. What do you think to that? xx

Sorry... That was a bit cheeky of me... A medieval barn sounds amazing! A museum tour would be an opportunity your guests would never get again, so it would be a good option x

I've always found its hard to please everyone food-wise at a wedding...
but everyone has had buffet before in their life: you can eat as much or as little as you want, toddlers can easily feed themselves without mum or dad cutting it up into little chunks or waiting til it's cool enough, there's a choice for veggies (usually), variety for everyone... It can easily be done by pre-ordered platters from supermarkets
Only difficulty I've experienced as someone with severe allergies are that buffets are a nightmare in terms of food with allergens contaminating non-allergenic food (e.g. Someone using the same server in croutons as the salad). But, having been that difficult person to feed, I always offer to take my own food & save the host the hassle of providing something just for me. (Suspect its going to be tough sorting my buffet out though...)
    Buffet - what's not to like? :-)

Master of ceremonies - OH brother is doing this for us - basically telling people what to do in a loud voice (one of jobs we had for the three best men contenders).

He (or she, if she has confidence & a loud voice) will announce the arrival of bride & groom, when the buffet is open, when people should please take their seats (for speeches etc), first dance etc. may help keep it a bit more traditionally formal in that respect if that was your worry about not having a traditional sit down meal?

All they'll need is a glass and a spoon to tap on it, so don't worry about having another person to suit & boot for the occasion. Could be a nice role if you're struggling to think of a way to include someone in the wedding

hey Kelly, not sure what you mean about the story behind it? Glad you girls like the idea.

I told my mother yesterday evening and she basically looked down her nose at me and told me she wasn't happy with the venue etc, ok it wasn't in those words but that's basically what she ment. xx

My mother took it upon herself to decide that I wasn't having my reception where I'm having it (and as you can see in my pictures its in a grand old house) so she decided to turn up about 1 hour late to the viewing I had arranged for her and dad so they could see it. They live 10 minutes away from it and she sat all morning crying to whoever would listen that I am making a fool of myself having my party there blah blah blah. Well when she did eventually turn up at the venue within 5 minutes she was walking around saying "Oh isn't it lovely oh yes I can just imagine what this and that will be like on the day". Bloody unreal she was

The prisoners will be nowhere near. Think it's a great idea. Whilst I think prison memorabilia would be interesting does your h2b really want to be giving tours on his wedding day? Xx

He might be really into his job like my h2b is into his. If my husband to be could bring a portfolio or cd Rom of his work to our wedding to show our guests he would do, seriously :-) the day that I moved in with him he did nothing but show me his collection of engineering books for hours. I was bored out of my skull and tried to seem interested but he was having a blast lol.

I got the opportunity to visit the same thing at a prison once and I found it really interesting. Although this one was all about make shift weapons to use to harm each other like putting razor blades in toothbrushes. Apparently if you put a number of razor blades close together the the cuts can't be stitched up and will cause permanent scarring to the face. May be a but morbid for some if it is a similar display x

I saw a display of automatons that French prisoners had made once and their work was so intricate and fascinating even though the automatons were not moving due to being in protective glass boxes so I think prison displays can consist of all sorts of stuff.

Tori I think your h2b and mine would get on like a house on fire lol!

I think it sounds fantastic, I'd love to be a guest at your wedding. You will never please everybody at your wedding, so do what will please the majority (and yourselves!), don't worry about 1 or two grumblers - it's probably just in their nature!
