OK, so the thing you need to remember is that the portion size in the US (esp. Vegas) is HUGE and that's what makes it cheap. Hubby and I ordered a starter and main and split them between us and it was plenty. In Vegas, expect to pay around $6-8 for a salad and about $15 for a main course. The other thing to consider is one of the multitude of buffets. We did the Bellagio buffet and the quality was outstanding. I've never eaten so many snow crab claws in my life! One guy next to us just ate those and nothing else...but I couldn't have done that as there was so much yumminess there LOL! The other thing about Vegas is that you can get discount coupons from the same places (booths) that you can get discounted theatre tickets from. We got 35% off at Binnions Steak House (highly recommended - best steak I've had) by paying $2 for the voucher! What we tended to do was have a large breakfast and that lasted us right the way through for an early dinner (by having a small snack like ice cream or cheesecake in the afternoon). As for NYC...I found it to be a bit pricey food-wise, but I went there like 6 years ago, so things may have changed and I think I got trapped in tourist-ville and got milked by the locals :( I have no idea about Hawaii, sorry!

Thanks Little Kettle - probs the best person to talk to about Vegas!! ;) H2B is in the military so we will be taking his ID card to get discounts - thanks for the heads up re: vouchers!!!
We only have 2 full days in NYC and our hotel gives us B'fast so we will only need tea and snacks.
I'll email my friend who did Vegas and Hawaii for her honeymoon and see what she says and get back to you x

Food is very cheap and the quantities are massive. Definitely use your husbands military id as most places offer some kind of military discount. Hawaii has amazing seafood, tropical fruit and Japanese food. One option is to shop in grocery stores for food as well. Foodland in Hawaii is amazing.

Never been to NYC so can't comment on the cost of a meal. It will all depend on where you eat. I couldn't imagine going to NYC and not having a slice (pizza) and of course that would be a lot cheaper than eating a meal at one of those tourist trap restaurants in Time Square. Even though food is generally much cheaper and better than the UK you'll need to factor in a tip. Tips in the US generally range from 15 - 20%. In the US it is legal to pay service staff less because they are expected to earn tips. Waitresses, busboys, & kitchen staff rely on these tips. In New York the minimum wage for people earning tips is $2.13 an hour. Average rent in NYC is $2490. So don't forget to tip your waitress. I'm just saying this because OH's mum and sisters went to NYC and would give $1-$2 tips and I could have throttled them.
