I'm new to this. My name's Lyndsey. I met my partner Alan way back in 2011, I worked with him for a week and we both absolutely hated each other. I was re-located in work in September 2013 and he just happened to be there, as soon as I walked in it was love at first sight! (Second sight?). Everything spiralled from there really, it was like we were always meant to be together. He proposed March 2014, on our 6 month "anniversary" and we are currently awaiting our first home being built.
We still haven't been completely tied to a wedding date or any formal decisions but we may look to get married in March 2018.

Hey Everyone! My name is Samantha and I am marrying my other half Charlotte in November 2018. We've known each other since we were 13, got together when I was 16 and I'll be 22 this year; In june we will be celebrating 5 years together. Whilst our wedding will be non-traditional what with us being two women, with one in a dress and the other in a suit. My tastes are quite traditional and I've been thinking about my wedding day since I was a little girl.
I feel like I'm going a bit wedding crazy and we only got engaged on the 20th March; I've already been to try on wedding dresses. I've brought the shoes that I want to wear on the day and I've sorted out my something old, borrowed and blue etc. The colour scheme has been chosen and we have started researching venues.
Sorry if i've rambled too much!

Hi ladies, my name is Michelle and I will be marrying my partner (Daniel) on the 1st September 2017. I'm really excited but even the thought of planning such a big event is just so overwhelming for me. I would get a wedding planner but we are trying to keep wedding costs down. We've set a budget of £17,000 and I'm hoping that will be enough. What I have found hard is trying to get a list somewhere of what a reasonable price is for everything. For example I initially set a budget of £3000 for my dress. When I started asking and looking around everybody made it clear that, that price was quite a lot and I could get dresses for a lot cheaper. Thank God I've found my dress which should come to £2000 with a customised skirt as I didn't like the material of the original skirt so it's getting changed from organza to tulle but I think with everything else I'm pretty stuck.
Also as you can see me and my partner are a inter racial couple ( he's white British and I'm of a Nigerian background) but we did initially really struggle in finding a venue that would allow us to be able to provide Nigerian food and English food. We now have a venue in Surrey (a golf course) but we do feel we are being a bit ripped off. So basically we are paying £70 per head for a 3 course meal, half a bottle of alcohol and some evening canopies. But I had asked if a Nigerian catering company could provide max 20 main meals (out of the 120 meals). The venue said yes but we still have to pay the full £70 per head even though they are not providing main meals for up to 20 people. I understand that they are a business and that they have to make money but I cannot help but feel a little dissappointed and frustrated. We did think about going for a self catering option but that option would cost more.
I feel like I have overly rambled but I do feel a little better and positive that I can hopefully get some starting points by joining ukbride.
Thanks for listening/ reading xx

Hi Michelle welcome to the site :). I would talk to your venue again as that is awful that they are charging you £1400 that you aren't getting anything for!
CommentAuthorSusanM34
Hi and welcome Michelle! I agree with Steph. Speak to the venue as they are taking the micky a bit there! X

I was going to post this in another forum but unfortunately can't find one related... are anyone elses in laws getting too involved? Despite being engaged for 2 years, we're really torn on what we want. My in laws are really trying to take over and it's put us both off even getting married. We don't talk about marriage anymore, the "wedding" word is now the most offensive word and we have to tip toe around the very thought of it.
I mostly joined this site to try to get myself more motivated for a wedding as I've really been put off; that's not right surely? In laws constantly put a downer on everything. Mother in law is trying to act like Mother of the Bride and doesn't seem to understand that this isn't her role this time around (her daughter is already married). They keep telling us that my sister in law HAS to be a bridesmaid even though we don't want her as one, the nephew HAS to be a Paige Boy otherwise the sis in law will be upset, and her husband HAS to be an usher because my other half was an usher at their wedding. Just going to point out, I wasn't a part of their wedding as I wasn't even a part of their lives then so I don't owe them anything.
We don't want any of them in the bridal party. We had already agreed not to have nieces and nephews involved as it would cause too much chaos. If his nephew was Paige Boy, my nephew would have to be also so my niece would have to be Flower Girl then my Goddaughter would have to be Flower Girl and can't have her without having her younger sister as it would be unfair given that we're a really close family etc... so the expense increases with each addition. My bridesmaids are my long term uni friends that I lived with and my maid of honour is my best friend...I don't have space for sis-in-law. Best man is other half's best friend who is female, and 1 usher is his other best friend. So we have it all planned but in laws are not happy!
They constantly put us down and have even told me "you are going to have to cut people off and not invite them!" due to me having a large family (my mum is 1 of 9; 18 grandkids on her side all with partners and and average of 2 children each, my dad is 1 of 8; 12 grandchildren on his side all with partners and an average of 2 children each) so they are all direct family members but my in laws (very small family/don't talk to their family) are saying that it is stupid to invite all of my family despite us all being very close as it makes the wedding expensive and that we shouldn't spend 1000s £ on a wedding.
Am I being a bitch? Am I doing something wrong? It's both myself and other half that are not wanting sis in law, nephew and bro in law involved. They have really put us off having a wedding which is why we won't fix a date. We're even contemplating eloping then coming back and announcing our marriage.
Sorry that I have ranted but I don't really have anyone to talk to, especially given that the bridesmaids to be don't know they're involved yet, if we decide on the big wedding that is.
Any advice will be greatly appreciated.
Sorry Again for the rant.
CommentAuthorStephH96
Your MIL isn't paying for anything is she? Sometimes that's why parents and in-laws think they have such a say because they are paying for it. You need to stand up to your MIL - do you have your OHs support? If you like the idea of eloping or getting married abroad, look into it as you'll probably be pleasantly surprised about the cost, plus you then get your honeymoon included in the cost of the wedding instead of having it as an extra expense! If it really does get that stressful a wedding abroad can be a good solution.
I think there is a rant thread about in laws somewhere, but if you ever can't find anything start a new discussion and if there is already a thread someone will let you know and bump it up for you.

Thank you Steph and Susan.
If they are paying, they haven't notified us yet. Maybe they do have the intention? I don't know. We haven't asked them to support us in any way as we don't want to depend on others. OH fully agrees with me and has all the same feelings towards them interfering but we're both scared of offending them. I was looking into eloping yesterday but couldn't find any costs. Sent a few emails about though just to help us decide what to do.
Thank you for your advice.
I'll have another search for the inlaws thread and see if anyone else has the problem.
Thanks again :)
