Hello there I'm a newbie looking for some advice/encouragement. Me and h2b are getting married 2016 and having an intimate ceremony and lunch with about 30 guests and 100 guests in the evening. We're both a bit alternative and after looking for inspiration on the internet we're both pretty taken with a steampunk wedding theme. (Go Google it!) The only thing is I am worried about the reception the style will get off my partner's family. My friends and family would all love it and join in with the victoriana/gothic like style but my partner's lot are pretty stoic and traditional. I can't even imagine his brother liking the style much and he's best man! Because it's only a small wedding part of me is thinking should I just be normal and not risk getting any snide remarks or should I go for it because it's my blooming wedding and when else would I get the chance to go OTT?!! Anyone else thought about it or done an alternative styled wedding?

If I had a lot of money I would totally do it!! Some of those pictures on Google are stunning It reminds me a bit of a game the whole steampunk theme I think its really sophisticated and a lovely change from the traditional wedding :) If you really want it why not :)
Lol thanks for the support. We've had a lot of trouble with the mother in law previously you see. It's put me on edge to the point where I tiptoe around her a bit. I would hate to be standing in a corset and aviator goggles with my Victorian gent punk husband and my mother in laws face to look like a dropped pie! Thanks for the confidence boost everyone

Definitely do it. Sound them out and see what they think though, maybe they will surprise you. If they don't though then maybe try to think of ways that they could fit in with it, without being too out there if it's going to make them uncomfortable. Maybe they could just have touches of it, like fascinators and boutonieres (sp?) in a certain style, while the rest of you could just go the whole hog!

Did you see the episode of randy to the rescue with the steampunk bride? What they did was pull the stempunk into the bouquet (for example clogs, and other items amongst the traditional flowers). He also brought the same ideas into a belt around the dress and within her hair style. It was really nice.

we are having an alternative wedding, we had a bit of a power struggle for a while over what was 'expected' etc but we just said we are having what we want. steam punk is fab, dont let anyone tell you otherwise just because its not their thing, they can have their hearts and flowers all they want for their OWN weddings!
feel free to check my planning diary out, all my geeky stuff is in there :)

That belt on Randy to the rescue is really nice. It looks like its got a spoon in it??

I can't remember all the things he added. Correct me if I am wrong steampunk is like victorian meet scifi. So its very much cogs, mechanics and victorian dress?
CommentAuthorSophiaT100
Steampunk is summed up by the phrase 'queen Victoria never died' haha! It's great all the positive comments here. Mother in law can like it or lump it. We've booked a steam engine train for the intimate ceremony with invitations being like Victorian train tickets in a steampunk style. So if mother in law does pull a face we can always throw her off the train! Thanks for the confidence boost. It's hard trying to keep people happy when you just want to do what you want to do

I've just Googled it and I've got to say wow wow wee wow!!!!! Its such a pretty and cool theme!!!! Its like an alternative vintage theme!!! I say go for it!!! Even if they don't like the sound of your ideas, once they see it all together I'm sure they will love it! and if they don't?! well who bloody cares!! its about you and your partner and any decent family will look past a theme and just be happy for the both of you!!!! I think its really fantastic xxx

Also, although I love my wedding, and im very excited, I have been completely steam-rolled into having a big white wedding as it were, when really my H2B and I have always been a little different..... so please go with your heart, go with YOUR wedding and don't let anyone else's thoughts or opinions change that!! xxx

Like a few others I had no idea what steampunk was but just searched it and I think it looks really cool. Something totally different and I can't see how it would be offensive even to traditional types. Love the sound of having your ceremony in a steam train, keep doing things your way, its your & h2bs day after all.

Fab theme, love it, do what you want it is your day xx stay firm xx

I'm with everyone else; it's *your* day, have it the way *you* want - "you" meaning both you and h2b, obviously! :P And I absolutely love the idea of a steam train - so unique, and I don't think anyone could call Victoriana anything but fun! (Note: Glad I scrolled back up the thread for a moment; I was about to duplicate Martine's comment about the Steampunk bride in Randy to the Rescue!)
I understand how you feel about people maybe not getting behind a theme; just last week I had the Grand Mandate from my mother about wedding stuff - "Don't go crazy", which of course, in her lexicon, means "don't have a medieval wedding". Well, sorry mum, if you don't like it, you don't have to come. One less invite to send (well, three really, as both my younger sister and nan are dependent on mum to get them anywhere not local to them); and guess who'd be the ones looking silly afterwards... Hint: it won't be the ones who were there! ;)
CommentAuthorMagpieBride
And I wholeheartedly second Millie's comment - any half-decent family would/should suck it up and at least put a smile on for the sake of the couple getting married!
CommentAuthorprincesspixie
although your wedding is a special day and you can be whatever you like, you still should be you so if steampunk is you go for it!! don't pretend to be something you're not just to please everyone else xx

I say go for it! My OH wanted a pirate theme, but I'm a big traditional white wedding girl, so we compromised and have little pirate touches at the reception. So our tables are named after pirate ships and our favours are chocolate coins in little wooden treasure chests, and everyone gets a bit of "pirate treasure" in their chest (coloured gem cufflinks for the men, and sparkly gem necklaces for the ladies). We haven't told anyone, it's a total surprise, because we didn't want to deal with the negativity from any of our family. At the end of the day you have to do what works for you, and if people love you they will love whatever you choose for your wedding. And if they won't like it, don't tell them and it can surprise them!
