Hi everybody, I've only just recently gotten engaged and don't have the first clue what to do, I've never even been to a wedding! I don't know how the day is supposed to go, how long you have to entertain your guests for or even how many parties you have :s everyone is saying different things about what is expected..."at least 2 meals...dancing...ceremony, then reception, then after party", I'm really confused, I would really appreciate some advice about how the day is supposed to go, am probably the most confused about everything that comes after the wedding, like what's the difference between a reception and an after party? Any comments would be greatly appreciated thank you!!

1st things first hun welcome and congrats!!!!!
the Ceremony takes place *if its a church, you go straight for photos then head to reception venue* or if its a civil ceremony you ponder about for drinks before the wedding meal is held..this is the main meal that the speeches are done in as well and where u all have your food...then after this..a while for more drinks then its reception where your band or dj comes to play..then about 9- 9.30ish you have the option of having a buffett or bacon sarnies which is done quite often!!!

between photos and waitin for reception to start, you have option of putting on entertainment but usually everyone just fends for themselves, mingling with others guests etc

firstly congrates, you have defo come to the right place. Each wedding is different hun. you make it how you want it, first thing to decide is where you want it and when. You need to look at following: venue budget date how many guest
Most wedding start in the afternoon. just so you get a rough idea mine starts at 2pm at the church, we then go to another venue for the reception, im feeding my all day guest a sit down meal about 5.30ish and then have evening guest coming from 7.30ish with a buffet starting about 9. i also have a dj from the evening do starts

I've never been to a wedding either and felt very out of my depth before I met these ladies so you are definitely in the right place
there are lots of ways of doing your day generally it starts with a ceremony and ends with a party some people have a small wedding breakfast (first meal after getting married) with close friends and family followed by a bigger party with more people music dancing ect. this sometimes has its own buffet or light meal as part of it
or you can do what i am doing and having a hog roast and buffet and a party
all depends on your budget and what you want but its your day you make it whatever you like.

should probably have said we are having our ceremony around 1pm followed by photographs then a 3 course meal with speeches etc then I have left time for a break for h2b and I from our guests before evening guest arriving where we will have a dj and a buffet

and like zoe, we're saving money on cars by staying there the night before which is handy!!!

Congrats on your engagement and welcome to UK bride. This place is great for getting ideas, asking questions and sharing your excitement with people who will never get sick of talking weddings. Your wedding can be anything you want it to be. There are a few legal things that you have to consider but other than that you can let your imagination run wild.
You have three choices when it comes to getting married. Registry office, Church Civil service in a licensed venue
If you go to your local registry office they will give you a booklet of all the legal places you can get married.
From there you choose a venue which will give you a date and time of your wedding. You don't have to feed your guests etc you could go for a picnic in the park and get everyone to bring a hamper (weather depending of course) You can provide as much or as little entertainment as you like. Its your day so do what you want to do. If you like the idea of having a garden party with a bouncy castle then have it. Just work out what your budget will be and how many guests you would like on the day and it will give you an idea of what kind of venue to hold it in. If you having it in a hotel etc then most will be able to help you with the planning of the day etc.

Welcome and congrats!
First of all you need to decide whether you want a Church or civil ceremony and what your budget is.
For a civil there are so many licensed hotels these days you're spoilt for choice, you can get a complete wedding package (includes ceremony, wedding breakfast, DJ, evening buffet, cake stand/knife, table plan & place cards plus a night in the bridal suite) for under 3k, you save money on transport because you're not going to different venues. It is for a limited number though and that number varies from place to place - we looked at one near us and it was 35 for the day and 80 for the evening so it wasn't feasible for us.

I had exactly this problem. When we first started checking out venues etc everybody just kept saying 'you can have/do anything you want. It's your day'. And it is. But unless you have a rough idea of how things normally go how are you supposed to know what you want/like. In the end we spoke to the wedding coordinator at our chosen venue and she laid out a typical day and we made some alterations. We're having the cake cutting before we sit down to eat and the speeches before the meal. We're having a hog roast as our wedding breakfast and we're mixing a ceilidh and a disco in the evening. Anyone on here could give you a run down of the timigs of their day and what they're planning so you can make the changes that you want.

May I also mention that there is the option of just having a later ceremony and an evening do if that is what you want - it also helps a lot with the cost! Thats what we were planning on doing but the venue we are going with only lets us do all three in august.. no less.

congratulations and welcome! you are at the right place, i have got so many different and exciting ideas from here (thank you each and every one of you x) we on quite a low budget and have guest coming from nearly 300 miles away so we are having a church wedding at 4pm to give them time to travel, and no wedding breakfast, to save a bit of money. after the church we are having photos then heading to the venue and having a dj and evening buffet. like everyone has said already, you have what you want and what suits your budget! good luck with the planning x

LoubyLou Thats what im doing, late wedding in a church, photo's in the church grounds then straight to the reception. It's Cheaper! This is deffinatly the place to ask though. I would start with a rough idea of what time of year you want to get married. then i woul think about where. registry office, church or at a venue that has a wedding/civil ceremony lience. (you an research them on the net, although i found some of them arent listedso you might want to hunt around or even call the location yourself if you have found somewhere that you relly like) for the flow of a wedding you have the ceremony, then pictures are usually taken while guests get a drink or few and mingle, maybe with some form of entertainment. then you have the food and cutting of the cake etc etc then a few more drinks and more pics an the main bit of entertainment starts when the evening guests turn up. some choose to put on a buffet then too. you dont have to follow any order though and can have it as big or as small as you like! then i would think about colour schemes/dress etc etc. then entertainmen..but this will fall into place later and as you research it, you will find out mre and more. a few things i never knew were...... you have to give notice from a year in advance at the registry ffice (dunno bout church if thats where you are getting wed) and my moh told me you dont just number the tables, you name them too!!!!

hiya the best weddings are the least structured.
i would have the ceremony- church or civil then go to reception venue have pics whilst enjoying canapes & a drink (dependant on budget) then sit down meal with speeches then party with buffet! if your budget stretches id have entertainment whilst pics are being taken and maybe during the meal - magician, singer etc loads to chose! include loads of personal touches - themed table names? hand made favours (these are left on each persons place at the table can be sugared almonds to lipgloss to candles anything!) ensure you meet and greet everyone and noone is left bored or hungry (thats the main criticisms!)
