Wedding Forum - Wedding ring gold carat query...

Hi guys,

So we went wedding ring shopping this morning and I now know what I like, but wanted to ask about the difference in carats. My engagement ring is 18ct and one of the jewellers said that I would have to get an 18ct wedding ring otherwise a 9ct ring will get rubbed down. However another jeweller said that it wouldn't matter as much these days as 9ct quality is better than it use to be. What do u guys think/know?

My problem is I've found 2 rings I like in 9ct but not many in 18ct. Also the price obviously differs by quite a bit and may take us over our budget.

Any thoughts?

I've heard the same, I'd get the same carat.

I've spoken to a few jewellers who had different opinions.

They all said there will be wear and tear and rubbing even with the same carat, and this increases faster with different carats and even more so with different metals...but it will take years to really notice.

One advised to stick to the same and the others all said if ones 9 and ones 18 then it will wear down slightly faster but not enough to worry about. Replating, especially for white gold might need doing every 2-5 years or so depending on the wear.

It's only about £30-£50 for replating and some rings come with a guarantee that will cover the cost of this anyway.

Have you gone through a chain? It might be worth showing the ring to an independent jeweller to see if they can make it for you at a lower cost.

Rang this chain jeweller today to see if theyve any news on my query about the 2 rings I like. They stated they did call it through but have still not heard back and will chase them for me. Since seen 2 new rings I like 18ct which are in the sale but not in a lock store, may ring to see if they can get them sent to my local store for me.

When we were looking for our rings, we were told to go with the same carat / metal as our engagement rings due to the wearing of the metals if they were different. We were told this by both high street jewellers and 2 sets of jewellers that come to your home.

I was going to say that 9ct is harder than 18ct. I went for a 9ct engagement ring because it was cheaper than 18ct. I would try an independent jewellers rather than a chain, as you could get a great deal. We got our wedding rings from an independent jeweller and we got both rings for £850, free engraving (we had both done and they look brilliant), my engagement ring cleaned up for free and 3 free silver bridesmaids pendants. We were originally quoted over £1000 for both rings but we got quite a big discount.

Ok. My ER is a 9 carat, however I do want my WR to be 18. Here in Brazil is really hard to find rings under 18 ct (and it's really cheaper than UK!!!). I've found some simple rings, white gold, 18 ct, for about £200 the pair! So, really going for 18ct, even if I have to pay for cleaning and replating more often.

what I would say is if you have use a chain like 3rnst j0n3s which is where i got my engagement ring which is 18 carat white gold i fell in love with an engagement ring to the point where i was going to get the 9 carat version of my ring, however they reguslarly do a deal where if you buy 2 ring at 18 carat or platinum (mix and match) then you get a 20% discount. I was lucky enough to also be able to get a further 12% off through a discount scheme at work where i could buy a gift card and pay 12% less than the gift card was worth so in the end my rings were 32% off so try and find ways off reducing the cost of the ring if it is the cost that is an issue. For me doing this I got the exact ring that I want without compromise and still came in under budget with rings that should have been £300 more than what I had budgeted xx
