I am unsure whether to say anything or just smile. Basically h2b and i spent quite a while deciding what we would ask for as wedding presents. We have finally decided on thomas cook vouchers as we would like to be able to take the kids on a big holiday.
Last night h2b informed me that his nan (fil2b mum) was going to buy us a new dryer as a wedding present.
We have a dryer, it works fine, but apparently she is buying us a bigger / better one.
While on one hand i know that they dont come cheap and i want to be greatful, there is a big part of me that wants to shout wtf!!??? We have asked for vouchers, what is wrong with getting us what we have asked for...... or even explaining that she would rather not give vouchers but is there anything we need.... i would perhaps ask for new dining table as ours is broken!
Why does she need to get us a new dryer? Its not what we asked for, its not what we need and i never ever would have even considered asking for one. Seems like a total waste!

Am i being totally unreasonable? Like i said, there is part of me that just wants to be greatful, but i thought the whole point of putting what you would like on an invite, and informing parents of what you want was so that family members didnt decide to buy you something completely random!

That is completely random. I can't get my head round it lol. How bizarre!

I would say something, I know it'll be a bit awkward and she might take offence but maybe say we're really grateful for such a generous gift but there's nothing wrong with our current drier and we'd rather you didn't waste your money. Then see her reaction before suggesting something else she can give.

Maybe she thinks you need a new drier and doesn't realise you don't?

Some family members prefer to get you something practical and I would be grateful for the dryer - which you'll need when you get back from your family holiday to do all that post holiday washing!! I'm sure she's not the only guest coming to your wedding so if you ask everybody else to get you vouchers I'm sure it'll all come together...

Perhaps you could ask h2b to have a word (or do it yourself if you're on good terms with her) and suggest that if she would like to buy something for the house then a table and chairs would be a better option since you already havea dryer x

i guess its up to the person buying the gift what they choose to buy although it does seem a bit random but i guess she is trying to be practical i reckon you should be grateful at the end of the day a dryer will still be there and going strong long after the holiday is only a memory maybe you could sell your old dryer and put the money to the holiday xxx

I have suggested to h2b that he get his dad to suggest instead of a dryer maybe a dishwasher or new dining table...... I guess your right, if she does get me a new drier then i can sell the old one and put it towards holiday fund.

Yes it is strange. Maybe a good way around it is acepting the gift. Selling your own dryer and putting that money towards your holiday? Only a suggestion but it may keep everyone happy. xxx

I am so slow today, I may just go back to bed!

However you handle it hun I hope your other relatives get the message of only vouchers, or you may end up with a fully equipped kitchen and no hols. xxx

We asked for Thomas Cook vouchers ... and mostly got them, but we also got a casserole dish, a couple of mugs and some tealight holders from various people. To quote, people are strange! I would say that your suggestion of a dishwasher, or a dining table put to her would be a god idea. Some people just don't like giving money or vouchers xx
