Whilst looking at venues the possibility of having the reception in my in-laws-to-be garden has cropped up. They live in France the chances of the weather being nice are slightly better but what about the price? Does it work out cheaper than a hotel package or do all the little bits add up? Is the stress worth the effort or is it fun to put the pieces together? Were all ears for the pros and cons of garden weddings!
Thanks for your help!

ive been told that the little things can make it even more pricy as venues get their money back by hiring to many ppl.... you need to make a list of everything u need and contact suppliers. Then check wedding venues here that cater and compare the price

It depends on how many people you have there to if you can do it or not. You have to remember that you need enough fridge space so as not to poison your guests etc. I think if you did it well then it could work out cheaper as you have no room hire charges etc but you may have to get things like fridge hire, catering kitchen, table cloths, marque? Things like that can add up so you are best to work out all the costs of both options to see which one suits you best. I guess the main con would be weather so you need to make sure what ever you do you can do if it chucks it down with rain.

you could do it in your own garden for a few thousand. if your having marque, kitchen eqipment etc. I look at this. Considering people pay 5.5- 8k just for room hire and the food here in the majority of places. its rather cheap. depends on your budget. i think you can do it. and i was working on about a 70 day guest list when i was looking at doing this. plus more for evening

my friend is having her wedding in h2b family garden... when we went to see an events planning team things were cropping up that we never even considered...*see xjox's list!!** portaloos dancefloors etc!! its working out so much more expensive as things we take for granted at a hotel/venue (china, chairs, tables, toilets, lighting!!) you need to source! however if your heart is set it can be done... my friend is perfect example.... but hers is costing £9000 without centrpieces, dress shoes accessories registrar etc xxx

Its difficult hun because altho the idea of getting married in ur in law parents garden sounds lovely i worry that the little costs really start to add up where as if u had a venue you've got all the support and advice from them as well as they're there to take the stress off u on the day. But if you can afford it then go for it :D xxx

all the equipment I have looked into average prices off apart from portaloos (that's this afternoon's task) and I think we could do it for cheaper than a Cheshire venue unless we have to pay for catering tents, generators, cookers etc etc then I think it would become way more expensive.
If we were to go for their garden then I was thinking maybe we could ask different members of the family to do different courses so no-one is put under to much pressure. Either cold food or a bar-b-que or hog roast would probably be the most efficient and cost effective I guess.
Keep the advice coming it's so great to be able to ask so many people for their advice. Unfortunately only being 22 only one of my friends has got married and no-one in my family has got married for over 10 years!
Thanks again

I managed to bag a country house hotel for 4k which includes 3 course meal for 60, buffet for 80, drinks on arrival, two glasses of wine with dinner, a drink to toast, DJ, red carpet arrival, toastmaster, accommodation for the night, flowers for the venue, centre pieces, canapes............oh and tea, coffee and chocolates so it goes to show that if you shop around you can get some good deals. It also means they clean up and you don't have to worry about anything as they sort it all for you.
Some hotels like the holiday inn do special offers where you can get the basic package for £999. Shop about and then work out which is going to be the better deal for you both financially and stress wise etc.

My friend had hers in her parents back garden, marque etc. She said that it cost nearly as much as having a venue there were lots of things that they didn't realise - hiring furniture, flooring, cutlery & crockery etc.

We are having our reception in our garden and it is costing us under £1000 but we are only having about 40 guests. Buying 2 different sizes of marquee from bay of e, furniture hire costing about £100, vicar is letting us use his tea urn as it is a tea party theme, and I have been collecting bone china tea sets for each place setting. Got place cards, favours and things like that over the past 6 months, and because my h2b works for a food company he can order all the buffet food that we want for about £200, great discount and lovely food too! So it can be done, it just depends on numbers, what type of food you want etc. x

Having your wedding in France can be quite expensive if you order from a caterer, I am French and was supposed to get married there, but could not afford it due to food price and hiring marquee, etc. more expensive than over here.
Soon to be Mrs Gary Doublé
Everything is now booked
Getting really stressed and excited now

I think it depends on the area of France just like in Britain, a Kent wedding will cost more than a Cheshire wedding for example :) With h2b's family in the food industry I don't think food prices will be a problem and if we get caterers we've had quotes of £15-30 per head from different companies so that's ok. When looking at this option we had always taken into consideration the furniture and equipment such as cutlery, crockery, chairs and tables so our estimate at the moment includes those prices. We wouldn't be having a marquee as the garden is a funny shape but we would provide types of cover in case it rains. The biggest problems we were trying to find a way around was covering the swimming pool to gain back a large part of the garden and how to serve food/go from ceremony layout to reception. My friend came up with a great idea of rather than caterers, employing serving staff and we have started to look into hiring pool covering which apparently does exist!
I think this is the idea we really want to go for as we can make it what we have both imagined getting married to be rather than conforming to a venues specifications as my parents are being funny about which venues I can look at....family politics! So far the garden wedding is looking much cheaper for our 60 guest list as a venue in Cheshire we're looking at £7,000 approx but for the garden way under £5,000 which means hello St. Lucia!!!!
If you think of any other considerations do let me know!!!
