If by Grant you mean Loan, i know Lloyds gives loans for weddings... But it depends on whether you want to be paying the interest on top of that. I have thought about it several times, but we have stuck to our guns and have been saving for a year now. only 4 more months to go now, eek. xx

I would be fuming if there were government funded wedding grants! I used to work for jobcentre plus and I remember a guy getting a community care grant when he came out of prison to furnish the new flat the council put him in 2 weeks later he came in for a budgeting loan because his DVD player didn't record so he wanted a new one. At that time I didn't even have a DVD player!!!!

    I can't wait until 29/06/2013

Ooooh Shirleygirly, i could not of worked there. I know ignorance is bliss but seriously!!!!!! I cannot believe what people get given in this country sometimes!
Here we are with a home, 2 children, both have a job and we are still having to scrape by and try to do this wedding on a budget.
We are having to make sacrifices for the next few years for the wedding to happen
Probably because a lot of our money (taxes) goes on furnishing a newly released convicts flat that they have been GIVEN!!!!!!
Oh it makes me SO cross!

ok going to make a point here ......not all "convicts" get given a flat ....they are sometimes put in an area where they are then in danger , i cant go into details but i have insight into this through a friend ..... most of the time they are given the bare minimum, there are other people in society that get given far more ....
i know of stundents at our school whos parents dont work because they dont want to ... they have a bigger house than me , new tv etc infact only today one was saying that they are getting the newest xbox for christmas ( i know they are as the mother also told me) ....

The only blessing is that we no longer have to pay tax for the lazy, oxygen thiefs that dont bother their a55e5 to get up and get a job! we did our bit when we served for our country just for our taxes to go on those kind of people - no thanks! id rather work in afghanistan and keep my money and put it to good use - like getting married :-)

Lala i know each case is individual and hence the ignorance is bliss comment as i never knew this happened with "ex convicts"
I agree however that the "freebes" people get in this country is a joke.
No offence to anyone intended at all but H2B and i are both trying to bring up our children by ourselves as WE chose to have them and WE are therefore responsible for them!
I feel if you cannot afford to provide for your children, DONT HAVE THEM!!!
We both work and are keen to show our children that this is what you must do if you want a good job and some money to spend on nice things but it makes me sick when i realise we would actually be etter off if we didnt work!!!
Where is the sense in that?
    Seriously is a**e about face!!!!

OMG , maybe asking this question was wrong of me lol, its started a debate here , Im sorry people for asking this question, i wasnt asking for any reason but coriosity xx

I agree with what most of you have said, for deff. I hate people getting benefits for no reason, especially if its to fuel an addiction, i dont say habbit cus a habbit is different to an addiction, habbits can stop, addictions need help to stop but ether way, the government should not be helping them be able to fuel that habbit that could turn into an addiction.
I also think that if a couple live together with children, at least one of them should be working, i dont agree that people on benefits earn more than a family with at least one working person there. Some of you may not agree but i dont work, thats through choice tho cus i want to be at home with my children, but h2b works a good job, i do get benefits, but its child tax cradit and child benefit and h2b gets working tax, all three benefits, everyone is entitled to so even if both parents work they would get that and i thing its a good thing the government provide for children (well used too, child care doesnt exist anymore which pisses me off and child tax credit is a lot less than it was and baby bonds no longer exist grrrrr).
Also some family dont have a choice and have to be on benefits or have valid reasons to be on benefits, you can just judge that every family that doesnt work is in the wrong as its not fair, get the facts first.
As for convicts, i dont know much about it but i think it depends on what they were convicted for, weather they should be entitled to help, just my opinion.
I also agree that parents who have there children for benefits is descusting and i feel for them children as there obviously not loved much. Some people are selfish in life and really upsets me cus i happen to know a sutch a person, wish i didnt. Social services should be called if you have concernse over any child or children in any family cus these days if nothings done, bad things could happen, we see it all the time on the news.
There are some parents who are also misguided and do things that they think are right but not and they dont realise what there doing is wrong, they then need help and guidence, social services and social workers provide that for them as there not just there to brake up familys, they tend not to do that without valid reasons.

Good post by Terribabylove. Especially where she says
"some family dont have a choice and have to be on benefits or have valid reasons to be on benefits, you can just judge that every family that doesnt work is in the wrong as its not fair, get the facts first."

H2B and I are on benefits (though we have no children) we're looking for work but to make the same amount we get from benefits one of us needs a job that is at least 35 hours on min wage and finding a job at all at the moment is not easy, especially one that gives the hours we need. It's incredibly frustrating when you're on benefits and people are all "get a job!" when I can find a job that pays me enough to live, I will thank you! It would be foolish to take a job that won't pay enough and leave us struggling worse than benefits just cause no one respects people on benefits.

I have to say that myself and my partner both work (i am on maternity at the moment) and we receive benefits. If we never i dread to think where we would be. Living in Cornwall unfortunately cost of living is very high compared to the very low paid jobs round here. In this current climate we are very lucky to have our jobs and are also very grateful for the top ups we receive.

hate to sound controversial here but...
poverty and deprivation breeds crime. So the government has a duty to help put ex-cons back on the right track following conviction as the re-offending rate is so high within the 1st 2 years of release.
the government should provide some funding to help people escape the cycle and make something of themselves, but also needs to tackle the problems that are brewing due to the fact that everyones (ex-con or not) standard of living is decreasing and people are very discontent!

I've just about always worked since leaving school 23 years ago (probably been unemployed for less than 6 months of that). Tbh I think even if working means that you're going to be bringing in less initially than benefits it still pays in the long run to work. After all it's better to hold your head up and say you're working than say you're 'long term unemployed' (sorry if that offends anyone but just my opinion). And after all, once you're in a job there tends to be yearly pay increments anyway and chance of promotions etc so it definitely pays to be working. Also, if you have kids I definitely think it's better to be a positive role model for them if you're working as opposed to them having parents that don't. Working in a school in an inner city area I've seen this far too much in the past few years - and it usually rubs off on the kids when they get to school leaving age, as they think if their parents can get nice things and not have to work, why should they. Shocking really.

I've recently had to sign on (some of you have probably read my thread about all the c**p I've gone through at work) and it's definitely been an eye opener. I can't actually believe the some of the people in there. Some of them look like they've been there so long they're part of the fixtures and fittings - and today a guy was there to sign on for JSA but couldn't speak a word of English (they had to get an interpreter). Sorry, but how the hell is he seeking work if he can't even speak the language???? I agree benefits seem to be handed out to all sorts of people (some of them wrongly IMHO).

My husband works, has a decent job - but even now he earns too much to claim Working Tax Credit (just over the limit by a couple of grand). Luckily my son is still at college so we can get Child Tax Credit and Child Benefit but can't get much else.

Even when we were both working (I've worked continuously for the last 15+ years) we could pay the bills but had to seriously save if we wanted the 'nice' things in life. But I know someone who is a single parent on income support (decided she couldn't work because she has a child at primary school(?) and couldn't get the hours that she wanted). She's been like this for years - but can still afford at least a couple of foreign holidays a year not to mention gigs whenever she feels like it (and not the small local ones, usually the stadium ones). I think some people just know how to play the system while the rest of us support them and their kids!!!

thing is i have just come off benefits and its harder coming off them than getting them!! and i know someone who has 3 kids just so she could get a bigger house off the council! i hated being on benefits i felt like the biggest sponge but i didnt have much choice. i frustrates the hell outta me that they're making it so hard to come off them and are giving them to people who dont always deserve them (ie people who work a full time job and dont declare it or people who pop out a kid everytime one reaches the upper limit for child benefit....yes i know a woman who does this etc) and we get like 200 a week wages and even with no rent to pay we're getting drummed into the ground by council tax and other bills. benefits annoy me because occasionally they really dont help those who need it simply because they dont fit the pigeon holed guidlines that are required for said benefit like as i am not twenty five i cant claim tax credits....... i went to two gigs while i was on benefits coz i didnt pay for either ticket lol but there was no way i could afford it if i had had to pay for it.

I think the main benefit that needs reforming is child benefit. The upper limit for this is about 58,000 a year. So if Me and my partner earned 57,000 a year we would still get the 80 quid child benefit every month. What a joke. Imagine how much they would save by lowering that to say 45,000.

I think there has to be a lot more cases of benefit fraud in the country if people are managing foreign holidays on benefits...

It's all well and good saying working pays better in the long run but unless you can get hours that are going to cover the bare minimal basics it's not worth putting yourself in poverty over. It's also alright for some to say they have to save hard for "nice things" but some peoples ideas of nice things aren't going to be the same as others. On benefits we can't afford phone contacts, TV licences, or cars- things many people would see as necessity but to us certainly count as "nice things!"

I don't think it's fair to lump EVERYONE who's on benefits into one "you don't deserve it" category and complain about how they spend the money they're given because some people feel it's money that should have been theirs (tax)

I work and so does h2b but i get a top up of money because we had our daughter. Its only £81 a month but it really does help us. We used to get another grant but that stopped in april cos the government lowered the how much you earn so we no longer qualifiy but we both pay our taxes and we both have had a job since we left school i was even at college and uni and still paying tax so i feel like i can say that i dont feel guilty about recieving this extra money to help my family out.

All red and white, give chickens as gifts to the family and kellogs bowls as favours..

Holly - yes I have a car (to some a 'nice' thing, but to us quite a necessity as my son has aspergers syndrome and when he was at school the nearest school the education authority could give him was over 12 miles away. Not a problem as there was a school bus, but if there was an emergency at school I needed the car to get there). Like I have said before, I have just about always worked so why shouldn't I have a car now? Up to the age of 28, and whilst bringing my son up when he was young it was something I couldn't afford though.

You also mention not been able to afford a TV licence. Hate to upset you - but that isn't a 'nice' thing but a necessity (unless you don't own any broadcasting equipment in your house??) A word of advice - if you don't have one, don't broadcast it on here (you don't really know who could read these posts).

And to be honest, I don't think everyone on here is grouping everyone on benefits in the same category or complaining that the money given to them should be theirs (in tax) - but some people do take the p**s when 'job seeking'. There are jobs out there if you look - but unfortunately some people are too choosy. I can understand that if you have qualifications and experience in one particular field - but a lot of people have only 'varied' experience (ie in a lot of different areas) so are able to work doing most things, but instead they tend to complain that there's nothing around because they won't broaden their job searches, but prefer to claim benefits long term. I've only been claiming for less than 2 weeks and it's an awful strain on self esteem so I can only imagine what it does to these people.

Plenty of people do take the pee and are too picky. Although there are people like me to have to fight foreigners just to get simple cleaning jobs. There are also so many people who do get away with fraud and it's infuriating, but everyone's situation is different and I don't think it's justified talking as if ALL people on benefits don't deserve it, besides at the end of the day it's better to have people getting money they "don't deserve" (by not working) than the rich/poor divide being massive and having people en mass living on the streets. Although if people on benefits are receiving more than a working couple on full time hours then something is definitely wrong.

I don't have a TV license and the TV licensing people know this. We don't watch TV and anyone is welcome to come over and check if they want. It most certainly is a "nice" thing and not a necessity.

    @ Jillybean

I'm sure it's been mentioned on here once that Vistaprint sponsored a wedding?

If there's any new/re-opening after refurbishment hotels or other venues in there area you could ask of they'd do you a deal for the publicity? Especially if you have a lot of people, the amount of money the venue would make at the bar would be worth a discount?

Same for other businesses - florists, stationers, catering, photographers.

It's a good thing to mention that you'd volunteer to be in your local paper? Using local venues and businesses for your wedding would be sure to make a good feature for your local rag :) Especially if you made it your "thing" - used as many local services as possible? Xx

Holly - I wasn't having a go when I mentioned the TV licence - but you do have to be careful where you say that, as you never know who is reading. That's fine if you honestly think that TV is a 'nice' thing and not necessity. But it isn't just TV's you need a licence for. The only way anyone can watch TV without one is by watching catch up only.

"Exception: If you only watch catch-up services online, then you don’t need a licence. For example, you don’t need one to use BBC iPlayer, or ITV player, to catch up on programmes after they have been shown on TV."

I agree that it's wrong if people on benefits are getting more than a working couple - but I do think some people (and not ALL) know how to play the system and cheat the benefits. My MIL (only in name, horrible woman lol) hasn't worked for years. She's in her early 50's and believes that she's 'paid her way in life now' - even though it's about 20 years since she last worked!!! She's quite happy to claim anything she can, and moan about her health (another way of cheating the system cos there's nothing really wrong with her).

Yeah I'm sure if you used as many small local businesses as possible they'd put you in the paper/give a discount :)
That's the new "thing" isn't it, using local :) Xx

I read an article about a woman who managed to get her entire wedding for free because she promised the suppliers to put their logos on whatever they provided and to get local news coverage on the event. She did pull it off but it looked more like a corporate event/wedding fayre than a real wedding as all there were ads and logos every which way! She saved herself about £15k so more power to her to having the gumption to go for it! Xx
