We had a religious service but not in a church, and had to wait a few weeks for the marriage certificates to be sent out to us (we'd ordered extras though and got married in Scotland).

yes your marriage certificate is given to you to take away that day, usually the groom puts it in his suit pocket.

I can only speak from C of E point of view as we were given it on the day once the ink had dried

We received our Marriage Certficate on the day - and a duplicate original we paid for - on the day.

As a word of advice, it's worth asking for 2 copies on the day. Ours only cost £4 on the day and should we ever need another it would cost £25. Places such as the DVLA need your original certificate to change your documents over and at least having 2 originals, you can be changing other things whilst one of them is away :o)

Make sure it's somewhere safe. i know a couple cases where the individual given it on the day looses it :(
