After having a chat with my h2b we are thinking of not having a formal sit down meal... but instead having a nice big buffet with lots of different kinds of foods etc. We both feel that it'll be better to get both sides of the family and our friends chatting and mingling!

Just wondering if anyone had done this or was thinking of doing this? Also if anyone has done this.... did you get caterers in or did you do it yourself?

Any hints/tips are welcome or horror stories!!

We had a buffet, everyone said it was brilliant. Our venue wouldn't allow outside caterers as they said their chefs are able to make anything and everything that we could think of. We had a chinese buffet and cheesecake for dessert and the food was fantastic xx

I was in catering and I've seen it done every way. If you want people to mingle, have plenty going on to catch likeminded people's interests and be careful with the seating - people will just get their buffet and go sit down in their named spaced if you give them opportunity.
On the other hand, us Brits often feel more comfortable knowing where we have to sit and who we're sitting with. You really need to think about the people you're inviting - you can't force people to mix, but some will grasp any opportunity.
Buffets are always good though as no-one can complain their food is cold when it's served and people can choose what they like instead of being given a plateful they don't want.

we had a buffet, hot and cold, everyone loved it,so many different things, wraps went fast, platters of meat vanished cheese boards and cream cake selections,we basically catered for everyone, and hardly anything was left,my parents paid £1,000 for ir but it was worth every penny

Thanks Ladies, the idea of a sit down meal is just too formal for me an h2b.

The venue we've booked is quite easy going and have said that we can use our own caterers so thats a plus I guess!

Jo, the seating is the one thing I'm not looking forward to doing!

    Thanks so much! x

We're having a BBQ. We've managed to get a good BBQ by a reputable caterer for £450 for 60 people, and we figured if we serve that in our own area of garden with a bar and tables round the edge of the dance floor with karaoke and a disco people can eat when they want over 2 or 3 hours, then they can be dancing, drinking, be outside smoking or chatting or sat with their 'click' watching the dancing or outside to talk.

Aww thats a lovely idea!! I'd love that but don't want to risk organising a BBQ due to the bad weather up here in Scotland!

we are doing a bbq in the evening originally that the only thing we awere going to have ....a late in the day ceremoney then drinks and canapes then a hogroast .....until we priced it up with our venue .....we would have had to arrange the hog roast ourselves and a marquee in case of bad weather ....then we looked at the package it worked out that we got the 2 rooms drinks after ceremony 3 course meal and evening recertion for £200 more( until we got discount) .....they offered a buffet and we asked for a bbq ...now we have no worries if it rains they have to provide stuff ....i dont have to worry about the food that is down to them ,

    so work out the cost

we didnt have a sit down meal of a buffet, we had a bbq! It went down a treat, everyone was really chuffed with the food and said how fantastic it was. We had a catering company come and do it. It was £16 per head for loads of BBq meat, salads, rice, potatoes, bread. Then a choice of 2 desserts.

we decided on a a wedding buffet as there's no way any us would be able to eat a 5 course meal so the cost pre head(65 quid) was gonna go to waste so we opted for the buffet (25 quid head)

we are having a buffet, h2b didnt want a sit down meal and to be honest would rather spend that small fortune on something else,
and h2b's uncle is a caterer and is doing it for £3 a head which is good shame i dont like him that much lol, and we will just let everyone sit where they want xx

We'll my side of the family will eat anything.... but his side of the family are soooo fussy and moan at everything. Just can't be bothered with his mother on the day and his Nana and Aunt complaining about the food that would cost me 40 quid a head.

Think buffet is the best idea my h2b has had!!

    xx
