The subject of videoing our wedding has been one me and the OH have been discussing for a while. We both like the idea but the quotes are crazy and we just don't have that type of budget.

Now my uncle has videoed all the family weddings but we told him when we invited him (and before looking at quotes) that were want him as a guest rather than videoing the day, his face lit up as you can imagine.

So we've been looking for a while and at a wedding show yesterday came across a company who hires cameras and then edits it. This is half the price of videographers and we like the idea. However the guy we are having for it wedding transport has said he has seen weddings who have brought/hired a couple of video cameras for the guests to use.

My question is has anyone done this at their wedding and did it work? In essence we only really want the ceremony and speeches as a memory.

I would say definitely get some kind of video record, as my husband and I found that there was so much we'd missed while we were busy with photos. If you can afford a professional great, otherwise hiring good cameras might be the way forward. It would be a bit like having disposable cameras for guests to take photos. It's worth thinking about who might video the wedding effectively, some people don't get angles and distance right. The other option is to see if you can find some students who might do it for a minimal fee.

For the same reason as you I am thinking of doing this for our wedding. We have found a company which will edit a video from multiple videos you send them, and you save a significant amount of money by not hiring the cameras and just paying for editing. So we will probably buy/borrow two videocameras and tripods and will allocate a bridesmaid/usher to position them and press record for ceremony, speeches and first dance. The bits in between we will probably put a sign up to encourage guests to use their video cameras and email us the clips to be edited in if they are any good. This way, we know we will get the three areas which we feel are important as they cannot be captured in a still images i.e. vows, speeches and dancing, It is £199 for editing only I think.

I love the idea of putting disposable cameras on the tables, would get some funny photos out of them as the professional photographers only stay until after the first dance :) will definitely be doing that for my wedding

I agree, have you thought about contacting a university close to where you're getting married? If they offer film making/ photography and videography courses you could find a pretty skilled and very interested student to make your videos and they're likely to have access to all the necessary equipment and editing software. They're likely to be very flexible about price because they'll be interested in gaining experience. I remember when I was studying photography we'd get emails every now and then asking if anyone was interested in photographing a special event, weddings, even fundraising calendars and the response was incredible.

Janet that's a good idea. Would you contact the department themselves to get acces to the students services?

My photographer is a student, she had a gallery open one day and we went in and she is now our photographer for the day for just £100. We said she could use our photos in her portfolio.

Id highly reccomend asking local colleges/universities.

I havent decided what to do about the whole videographer thing, I think its a waste of money and it's not exactly like its a video im going to watch and rewatch etc. Im following this post for advice! :-)

Stephanie there is a link on my wall of an edited version of our wedding dvd. Please have a look as I would highly recommend having a videographer. The actual dvd is about an hour and a half long with the whole ceremony, speeches etc but this is only 4 mins and is called review of the day. I love watching our wedding dvd.

Hi. I wasn't sure about having a video as I thought I'd be really conscious of it being there and wouldn't be able to relax. However, hubby really wanted one and all my married friends say they watch their video way more than they look at their album. I also think it is lovely for any kids of future kids to look at so we decided to get one and boy am I glad. There's so much of the day feels like a blur so I'm really looking forward to getting our DVD. We got a sneak peak which last 2 and a half minutes and I've watched it like 100 times lol like Katie we will also get a highlights video lasting around 5 minutes which I think will be fab. If you can pull back elsewhere and have a professional video id def recommend it.
