I am in a debate with my h2b about whether or not we should have a videographer as well as a photographer. We are wanting a photographer for before the ceremony (dressing up), during and for about an hour after and we are going to provide disposable cameras for our guests to snap a few photo's themselves during the reception. I asked my h2b yesterday about us maybe hiring a videographer as well. I said it would be for the ceremony and for the reception so it will include the speeches and first dance. H2b thinks it should just be for the first dance and for the speeches as he thinks that the ceremony should be something that we experience once and it will be forever stuck in our memory anyway. The only issue is we don't know how much this will set us back to hire both a photographer and videographer. Is anybody else hiring one or both, if so how much (roughly) is it setting you back, if you don't mind me asking? What are your thoughts on the topic?
CommentAuthorFlossie
If we were to hire a videographer, the key thing for me would be the ceremony. I personally don't want one and if we decide we do want anything recorded then we will just ask a family member to do the honours for us using a phone! I've not looked into prices for videographers but I know they are pretty pricey. I have also read that videographers sometimes get in the way of the photographer as well x

I never thought about whether they would be in the way of each other. The photos are the most important thing as well. The only problem I would have if I got a family member to record on their phone is that they might not be able to enjoy the ceremony as much if they have to record it :/ We were originally going to get my h2b's BIL to take photo's because he is really good and has a professional camera but it would mean that he wouldn't be in some of the photo's and he would have to lug his big expensive camera around all day and night :/ x

That is a really nice idea Andrea, we are going to give guests disposable camera's as well but never thought about asking them to leave a message with it! x
CommentAuthorJessica29792
Andrea, are you going to give a disposable to every single guest or are you just going to give one or two per table? x
CommentAuthorAndreaE20
thinking 1 per couple so maybe 5-6 a table depending on the size of the tables but that depends how cheap i can get them

We got married last Saturday and just had a photographer. There were a few reasons: cost (our photographer was £2000 and albums are another £1200 on top) and the fact we're not keen on being videoed (I HATE the sound of my voice lol)
Now the day has been and gone I kind of regret it; however much I hate my voice it would have been nice to have the ceremony on video as it was such a blur and it's hard to properly remember it. That said, one of the main reasons I regret it is because if the music (we had an amazing string trio and again, I can barely remember them), but, the string trio we had don't allow filming, so, it's kind of a moot point lol.
Ultimately we chose to plough the money into photography as while large, our budget wasn't infinite and we still had some constraints, and I know we'll look at the photos all the time whereas a video would likely only get an airing once in a blue moon.

I would recommend having a videographer as well. I've lost count of the number of people who've warned me that the ceremony will be a blur and I won't remember all the details afterwards. I know I'm really glad that H2B's proposal is on video, as there are little details of that that I would have missed otherwise.
30th August 2014 was the best birthday ever.
It was the day that I became Mrs. Dixon.

There are so many things I haven't even thought of! I never thought of how much it would cost to get them developed Bethan and Andrea! Hmm, maybe we should stick to one or two per table! I really like the idea of the ceremony being filmed as my memory is not great, h2b is constantly frustrated with me and constantly has to remind me things he has literally just said! I might see if any family members don't mind filming with a video camera or something before we actually consider hiring a videographer. Hopefully when I mention this to my h2b he will let us go through with it! At the moment our budget is 10 (I made a spreadsheet of potential costs and only put photographer down as 200! Didn't realise how much everything would cost!) so hopefully we will find enough in the budget to pay for photographer x

We are having both, personally I would pic videographer over photographer. Still images can only capture so much, they can't catch that emotion in your voice as you say your vows, or the words of the speeches, or the movement of the first dance ( which we are actually planning to dance not shuffle) lots of people I know are out wedding could take photos of need be, which I know would not be "proffesional" but would be enough. I personally trued to record my fail wedding on camcorder, but it was rubbish, view obscured, jumpy/Sharkey etc so would prefer proffesional. We are also having marryoke.
The day will be a blur and this will capture it all, my aunty had her wedding videoed 24 years ago, and I still have the VCR tape and like looking at it SD at the time I was only 1. It also mean s or daughter will be able to look at it and see, she will be nearly 4 doo will hopeful have some memories, but will mean her and future children will be able to see mummy and daddy getting married. I think o will watch that more than look at photos . you look at them once in a while , maybe 2 or 3 on the wall or in a frame, but the rest hidden in a draw.

We've decided not to have a videographer as the quotes we were getting were around the £600 plus mark and we would also have to pay our church an extra £150 for a video licensing fee :/
Getting ready to marry my soul mate! :-D
CommentAuthorJessica29792
Do all places require a video licensing fee Nelinde or is it just the church? And would this include family members videoing the ceremony on their phones? x

We are having both - We've got our photographer for £350 and our videographer for £200 (although we've now bumped up our package to the premium package) and it's worth every penny. In our opinion, you spend thousands, some even millions on creating your perfect day yet the only thing you have to remember that dress, those special details, that cute little moment in the corner going on that you won't see because you are too busy being the beautiful bride is the photos and a video... We want to have photos/video to look back on and remember alongside our memories as it seems pointless to spend all that time, effort and money on a day and not document for yourselves and your children! You probably won't remember half the stuff that happened and for us, we want to look back on those moments :) xx

If we can get both for as cheap as you have Catherine, then we probably wouldn't hesitate but the photo's are the main one for me. I can cope without a video so long as I have lots of lovely photo's both professional and by family/friends. But, it would be really lovely to have a recording of the ceremony and speeches as it will be really nice to listen to the speeches again at a later time and to watch our first dance etc. I have so many cute ideas for photo's, I really can't wait. We have just got the booking form through ready for us to send our deposit off to the venue as well so everything will be set in stone. Have to phone and arrange with the registra before we send the money off though so fingers crossed they will book it in as early as it is now (2 years and 8 months) x
CommentAuthorFlossie
Wow they are really good prices Catherine. I've not researched it much (my dad is a photographer so wanted to sort that out for us as he had someone in mind), but you see people spending thousands on both!! x

I honestly don't think we could afford thousands :( If it came down to it and we couldn't find anybody affordable we might have to ask my FSIL husband as he is really good at photography and maybe just offer him a certain amount of money for it. The only problem I have with that though is that I want getting ready photo's and ideally I don't want anybody other than the photographer, my mam/dad and my bridesmaids and daughter to see me before I walk down the aisle. And, as he is also family I want him in as many photo's as possible so it would mean compromising on a few of those pictures x
CommentAuthorCatherineR
I must admit, we are the same. We just can't afford to spend £££'s on things even if we would want to. We've found a fantastic photorapher who only came out of uni a year ago and as such, her work is absolutely fantastic, young and fresh but at thw same time, keeping the cost down! It's the same with our videographer but her work is epic too - she filmed stuff for the Queen during her Jubilee celebrations while still a student so it goes to show that you can get things without the price tag! Xx

A videographer is a must for me it wasn't for h2b so we had debated it quite a few times and the only reason he decided to allow it was that we didn't spend so much euros on holiday so saved £200 and that went to videographer.
My FBILs dad is a professional photographer it's more of a hobby but he is doing it for £150 plus we are paying for him to stay at the hotel the night of the wedding. Then we just need to pay for the album once the photos have been chosen will be getting a storybook from a well known photo site when they are on offer.
The videographer is costing £390 and that's from an hour before the ceremony until after the third dance so from about 1pm until 830pm roughly. We found him at a wedding fayre.
A very good tip I got was to contact colleges/universities with photography/videography departments and ask if any of the students would be willing to do the wedding it's normally students about to finish the course and go off into the big bad world some of them are really cheap but they can use the photos in their portfolio so they will do their very best for you as they will use it to get future business xx
