I have a dilemma for the reception venue and not too sure what to do.

Were getting married abroad next year, once we have booked the wedding we can then go and book the venue for the reception. However i have picked 4 places for us to go and view that are very nice places. However i really fancy the idea of doing our own catering and think we will get more satisfaction knowing it will be less formal and people will get the food they really want to eat.
But this is where my dilemma lays, i just can't seem to find a really nice venue that we can do our own catering at.

I live in West Yorkshire and just wondered if anyone knew of any nice venues where we can fend for ourselves. I do know of some places but they just don't have the right atmosphere for a wedding reception.

I may just end up going for the venue i like and have all the catering done for us. Which i know will cut down on the stress of us doing everything, and solves the dilemma. But i like to do do everything myself and then know that my efforts have been a success.

Any suggestions or thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

    Thankyou
    xxx

we are doing the same, our own buffet. We are looking at village halls in our area, some of them are really lush, but then my partner and I are both VINTAGE and RETRO nuts!
With some imagination and a LOT of tulle (cheap as chips) ANY venue can EASILY be transformed into something stunning! We are buying 100's of yards of tulle and have loads of ways of putting it up. I googled tulle wedding decorations and got loads of ideas that way.
A tonne of places said NO to us having our own catering, village halls tend not to.
Some masonic halls are lush inside and DONT have a caterer either, maybe theres one of those near you? we originally wanted a lighthouse until they put the price up, a party is £50 room hire, a wedding is £175 so out of principle we decided against that idea, but theyre usually cheap.
Not sure if thats any help

A lot of places won't let you self cater due to healthy and safety and also will charge you a corkage fee to take your own booze (We were quoted £15 corkage per bottle when their bottles were £15 each!).

I would suggest looking at village halls etc if thats the kind of thing you are after. You may even be able to hire a hall at a Town Hall - Huddersfield Town Hall is stunning inside and not particularly pricey I dont think?

I was going to say what about a town hall? my first wedding was in a town hall and we did our own catering (but the room cost me £500) so i dont know if thats plausible xxx

ta, i will defintely look into town halls. I am just going to weigh everything up and take it from there i think. We will only have a small amount of people (about 100) to the evening reception anyway.
But it's all part of the planning so were just going to embrace it all and try not to stress over it.

My reception is in Ireland so this might not be applicable to you but its worth mentioning. We are hiring 2 ballrooms of a manor house and we asked them to do a buffet only and they agreed even though in their wedding packages they list their menu as sit down meals.
So my advice is to ask venues to leave out the sit down meal and get them to do a buffet as a replacement. Some venues might just give you a no straight away, but other venues might agree. This is not only cheaper for you, but it gets rid of the meal that you don't want plus you don't have to go through an outside caterer AND the venue still makes some money.

If you look at my pictures you will see the house in which I'm renting two ballrooms, their chef is putting together our buffet (100 guests), the whole lot including the two rooms is costing us £900. It is possible and if you don't ask you don't get.
