Where abouts are you north or south? There are some lovely places around Stevenage/Ware that won't cost you a packet! St Albans too but places like Sopwell House will cost a bit more... My friend got married at the Novatel in Stevenage, it was fab day and I think it cost them under 5K! xx

I know what you mean!! Im only 23 and we're on a fairly low budget too. I looked at a few places, we live in St Albans, but we've ended up going a bit towards Cambridgeshire. Try South Farm, thats where we are getting married, they're really helpful and can help with your budget. I looked at a few venues in the area, theres a lot out there. Unfortunately we are not in a cheap area, so close to London reflects London prices. Rubbish!! Im paying £8000 for venue hire, canapes, reception dinner, 1/2 bottle of wine per person, champagne reception. Also its exclusive use, no other brides on the day. IM SOOOOO EXCITED!!

If you know stevenage, my friends got married in the hotel at the top of the old town (sorry the name of it escapes me) it wasnt that expensive and it was gorgeous inside! Sopwell house is fab, but expensive.
The castle in Hertford is stunning and not expensive but I found that the rooms for the reception were a bit small for my liking. (I was originally planning this wedding for Herts lol).
St albans will be more pricey, hertford is a lovely place (I miss it) and there are some gorgeous scenic places around there

Think it depends on the venue. We had to pay 3 instalments for ours one at 12 months, one at 6 and then the rest'll be after our wedding but I know other places had different policies. I'd say find the venue & then negotiate. Btw we looked at a hotel at the Letchworth Hall Hotel but it was lovely and they were doing special everything in for 5k type deals which were really good & just had a look Down Hall Country House Hotel have 30% off 2011 weddings if that's any good to you x

If you are in Bishops Stortford have you thought about essex?

This is info I posted few weeks ago for someone.

***SIL2B got married in Newland Hall near Chelmsford which was lovely but no overnight accommodation and cousin2B got married Vaulty Manor near Maldon and that was gorgeous and some accommodation.

As for Herts have you looked at Shendish Manor near Apsley - only attended as a evening guest but it was very glamorous location. Likewise Sopwell House in St Albans but I personally didnt enjoy that particular function but dont let it put you off. My fav on Herts has to be Hatfield House which was divine and glorious weather helped. ***

Working on a 3 dream plan for the next 5 years!
    Dream 1 = My gorgeous Mr P proposed - 4/9/11 Sydney Harbour
Dream 2 = Getting Married Easter 2012 by Bonnie Loch Lomond
Dream 3 = Working on that dream life in Australia

if you going on the county council website, there is a celebrations book you can download, it gives the approved venues, so you can literally work down a list.
