We're off to take a look around our planned venue next week and to meet with the wedding coordinator. Although the package we're looking at is pretty good, we were hoping to try and get some extras thrown in, or for a reduced cost. Here's what we're currently looking at:
Daytime reception for 60 to include red carpet entrance, balloon decorations on each table, flower arrangement for top table, white linen, welcome drink, three course meal with glass of wine, coffee and mints, sparkling wine for toasts, cordials for children, cake stand and personal engraved cake knife and MOC, followed by evening reception for 80 with DJ and buffet. Also included is a king size room for us on the wedding night complete with champagne, chocolates, balloons and rose petals, and a free meal on our first anniversary. Total cost is £3k
Extras that we definitely want but would cost more are:
Ceremony - £150 for room hire Family room night before the wedding (for me, MOH and BMs) - £80 License extension to 1.00am - £100
Do you think that we could try and get these worked in? Or would we be better thinking about our guests who will want hotel rooms and try and get the price of those down? (Currently they would already be at a reduced rate of £70 for a double). We have in our favour the fact that we will definitely hit those numbers - and above actually, since we will be paying for children separately for the daytime (cheaper, as it's only at a cost of £11.50 per child!) and will be looking at having about 100 there in the evening - and my family in particular are big drinkers at occasions like this, so they will definitely have a decent amount taken behind the bar!
Any thoughts or suggestions would be welcome, I've been going through this in my head for weeks now!
Now, finally, Mrs Riley

You've got quite a good deal there. Is it an independent or a chain?
Theres no harm in asking for the extras, worse they can do is say no.

Thats a great deal :) If you ask for anything make sure its something you will benefit from cause as you said guests already get a reduced rate! I can see you having the most luck with the ceremony being thrown in. especially as it will be considered as a late booking if your getting married in 10 months?? also it can pay to book thing a bit later, like most photgraphers will offer a discount if they have your date available at short notice......bit off subject there lol xx

No MrsMac, that's something I wasn't aware of - didn't even consider 10 months to be short notice tbh lol! The ceremony is the big one, we figure if we can get them to do that for free then that'll be a big help.
Dove - yes it's an independent, family run business. My h2b's brother has some connection to the owner as well, so it's possible we might be able to swing something there, but I'm not counting on it! It's a lovely place, and although it has no grounds of its own, there's a lovely communal garden just in front of it - kind of difficult to explain, but basically the hotel takes up a few properties in a square of properties and the garden in the middle is very well kept and can be used by the hotel for their events :)

I don't mean short notice planning wise, just most venues book up years in advance :) our date was the only weekend date left in our venue right up until 2013! Good luck and remember that is a really good deal even if they say no :)
Lol, yeah I keep saying to Steve that we just need to remember that the worst they can do is say no!

When discussing room rates bear this in mind ........
most hotel will want you to agree to fill a minimum number to give you a reduced rate ........if you fail to fill the contracted rooms the cost of said rooms will fall to bride and groom .... we are contracted to fill 10 rooms ( which we will do with no problem .....7 people have already said they are staying)
