OMG... our venue is up for Sale !! Im not sure whether to panic or not?! I spoke to the general manager yesterday who is the current owner of the hotel and owned it for 40 years and he assured me he is just selling it now so can retire. He said that he is going to stay on as the manager for at least a year so can hand over everything to the new owners and wants to ensure they keep on the staff and all bookings. Now i was quite assured by this but then my brother in law panicked me last night saying it was very safe and what if the new owners cancel it next year and we lose our £1000 deposit, i was slightly cocky and laughed as we got wedding insurance but it panicked me really.
Im not sure what to do now? Its a family run hotel and the majority of their money comes from big functions so surely they wouldn't cancel a big wedding?

Omgosh!! What a nightmare! As you said though, you've got wedding insurance so at least your deposit will be covered. Fingers crossed the owner is right and all will be well x

What a nightmare indeed, as you said you have your insurance so at least the deposit is secure. However, I'm sure the current owner is right, and as you say the big functions are what pays for the hotel to keep running so im sure he'll make sure none of the bookings will be messed with! x

I am sure they would of already thought about there current weddings hun, they will properly do a hand over and explain all the weddings and functions going on at the venue. They can't afford to cancel everything just because of change of management xx

This isnt good news but, do like fact he staying on as manager at least so someone who has been involved will still be there. Like the otehr ladies I would be very surprised at the following:
A) The current owner doesnt sell to new owers with a clause regarding current booking (he will still want the good reputaion to carry on if been family run even though he may not own it) B) Like the otehr ladies the new owners are going to need the big functions and weddings to survive and to get the reputaion of their ability around so they are unlikely to cancel
You have insurance so although it would be dreadful your deposit will be covered xxx
The venue I originally booked was sold recently. When I found out, I cancelled and booked elsewhere. Anyway, the new owners are now in place and the venue looks better than it ever did and the food has improved.
If the manager is staying on for the handover, then hopefully you'll be completely fine - the new owners will hopefully want to make a good impression!

If you have a contract in place then it should be valid with the new Owners and they will have to honour the booking at the terms and proces agreed. Just double check your small print to check there isn't a clausto allow any assignee to get out of the booking x

thanks ladies for making me feel better - we are going in anyway on 17th November to count tables and talk in more depth as only met them twice and both times we were discussing money and the actual deal whereas now it is booked we can do the nice things. So im going to talk to them in November and see how i feel about the whole situation but this isnt a big hotel but a small Edwardian hotel in a quiet village so the new owners wont want to ruin their reputation xxx

don't panic just yet hun he might struggle to find a buyer and also if he is staying on as manager i wouldn't worry about it too much at the moment.

Don't panic. I agree with Mrs Mann that there's a good chance it won't sell. Also the managers involvement is probably part of the sale contract. So I'd do my best not to worry.

Sounds like they are quite open about it too and willing to keep you updated so hopefully that means it will just be a smooth transfer.

My venue has also changed hands since we booked. I heard on the grapevine that it was going to happen. We spoke to the venue who assured me that in the conditions of sale, all existing contracts have to be honoured. We have now been to dinner at the venue since it was taken over, and it is as good, if not better, than before.

we had the same problem our venue was up for sale and it panicked me also my dad kept saying they will keep the bookings that they have done but it still worried me until we got a letter saying it had been sold and all exsisting bookings will carry on and staff would stay the same so that stopped me from worrying so all is good now x

If u paid a deposit and have a receipt then u have a binding contract so if they cancel they will have to refund u the money. Have a look at ur contract and see the small print to see how close to the wedding they are able to cancel to see where u stand. When the sale has gone through speak to the new owner and see what they say they might be another family and want it to stay how it is x

Don't panic.I actually work in a hotel that was sold earlier this year, it took 18 months to sell. However the new owner will not have an obligation to honour your booking as the deposit you paid was to the previous owner. The new owner is highly unlikely to not honour your booking as this would be seriously bad for his reputation, no matter what he was to do in the coming years all that the local people would remember is that he ruined someones weddings plans and as hotels do rely on local business this would be extremely detrimental to him. Has this chap actually got a buyer? If so ask for his name and maybe even contact him directly to find out what his plans are for the hotel.
