We have booked our wedding next year at a hotel in Brighton. we've since seen in the local newspaper that they have announced a large renovation project next year for the hotel.
LINK REMOVED AS IT IS AGAINST FORUM RULES - PLEASE POST ON YOUR WALL - THANKS MODS
We have asked them for some commitments about our day to make sure there will be no disruption and that it won't be a building site, but they have refused to do so. As a result we have decided that we can't continue with our wedding there but they have refused to return our deposit.
Just wondering if anyone else has found themselves in a similar situation (or even the same one with Lansdowne Place) and what the options are?
Any advice welcomed please as we are completely gutted by this and feel that is turning something supposed to be lovely into a very upsetting and stressful ordeal.
Thanks! x

thats a hard one do they say when the work will be carried out, and which areas will be affected they might start after your wedding date, I'd ask them when they will be starting the work, i'm not surprised they won't give back your deposit back, you would've thought they would have contacted you if they are carrying out building work near your wedding date.

b2bnicola beat me to it thats what i was going to say lol.
But like Madison if they not starting the building work till after your day then there will be nothing to worry about however if it is starting before day then I think it very rude of tehm not to informe you and that tehy dont return deposit (have you got insurance?).

I would write them a letter explaining your concerns and that you are not willing to take the risk and if you dont get the right reply then go higher. Our venue is up for sale but they have assured us that everything will be the same which is nice. However i hope you got insurance? They will cover you if the company mess up xxx
Finally marrying the love of my life !!
10th August 2013 - 9 years to the day we met !
Yes we have tried writing to them with our concerns and asked for details about the work and areas affected. They will not commit to when the work is taking place or how much of the building will be affected - the only statement we have on that is the one in the paper which says "throughout 2013".
Unfortunately they are not part of a chain so we are unable to go any higher. The only other hotel owned by them (well different operating company name but run by the same people) in Brighton has recently gone into administration with rumours of unpaid staff and suppliers, which doesn't exactly give any more reassurance.
We have got insurance but it is only valid if the company goes into administration. Potentially I guess also covered if they mess up the day, however I would rather not wait for them to mess up our day and then claim on insurance as we will never get our day again.
Thanks again for your input!

Oh this isn't good news and rather rude of them to not tell you more!!
I would speak to your insurance company and explain see if there anything they suggest etc.
I also like you rather not wait to see if they spoil your day and would be worried now that you have said regarding other one as well hope U find another venue who will be more helpful x x

Presumably you viewed the venue before signing a contract and paying your deposit. Arguably an implied term of the contract was that the venue would be fit for purpose and in the same (or similar) state as when you viewed it. Clearly something has happened since you signed the contract, that as they are unable to reassure you that this will not affect your day, the contract is frustrated and therefore you should be entitled to a full refund.
I would contact them and advise them of this and let them know who you will contact next if they still refuse to refund your depost. i.e local press, book of face etc
