    Hi All

I really want to wear a veil, but Im a little confused as to how to wear it.

Do I wear it over my face? or just pinned to my hair?

If I wear it over my face do I go through the whole ceremony with it over my face or does my H2B take it off before the ceremony starts?

Im having a civil ceremony so no church involved but Im unsure of traditions

    Help

    Charlotte

I would say its completely up to you really and what you feel comfortable with. Personally, im wearing mine just under my hair (which will be up) so I can wear it right through to the evening (in theory!) and get my monies worth! I thought maybe if I wore it on the top of my head that it would drive my up the wall by the time i've had the photos done.

You can have it how ever you want it but if you want it over your face I would go for a two tier so you have one tier over your face and the other one down your back. When it is lifted over it just makes it look like one veil. I can't remember at what point the husband takes the veil off but I think it is when they say kiss the bride. (check it though)

I'm having my hair down and curled so my veil is on a comb that will sit on the top of my head behind my tiara but you can have them at top of the neck if your hair is up etc. Your hairdresser will be able to tell you the best place to put it.

Now to add some more things for you to think about...............

    Do you want:

Birdcage- short bit of net over face (more like a posh hat)
    short- just on shoulders
    elbow- down to elbow
    fingertip- down to hands
    church- down to floor
    chapel- train

they also come in different edges so you can have plain straight cut, scalloped, lace trim, satin trim etc. Then you have crystals and pearls to think of too! Oh and make sure if you have a white dress the veil is white and ivory veil for an ivory dress. The two don't mix together very well.

im having mine in my hair as i know if i try putting it over my face even for a little bit it would drive me insane!! And claustrophobic too!! but usually you wear it over your face as you go down the aisle and as whoever gives you away gets you to your h2b they put it back then or thats what happens in every film and wedding show i watch lol. hope that helps.

I would say it depends how you have your hair. I can't decide yet but if I have it up I will try it underneath and on top to see which looks best. If I do decide for it to over my face my dad will take it off when he gives me away as I want to be able to see properly whilst I take the vows. I don't want a cloud over my face through the best part!!

As for length that kind of depends on what goes with your dress and what you feel most comfortable with. Mine is midlength so it doesn't matter how I wear it and I wont trip over it! Hope that helps a bit

I think i read that the veil was worn by the bride and all the bridesmaids to confuse evil spirits and was only lifted once the vows were read and thats why the bridemsaids were dressed similar to the bride. now a days i think its more of a fashion peice than anything else so its what you want. i wouldnt like a veil over my face while i was saying my vows though, would annoy me lol x

I thought I would confuse you but had to give you all the different options lol. I'm having a fingertip length as it goes nicely with my dress but if you have lots of detail on the back of your dress you don't really want to cover it up with a veil so you are better with a shorter one. If its plain like mine then having a veil down the back can add some extra sparkle and detail.

I've read the reason brides used to wear veils is because they had arranged marriages in the olden days and it was to cover up the face of he bride so that the groom wouldn't leg it if he didn't like what he saw coming down the aisle. We also stand on the left so that if anyone tried to come and steal us away they can whip out their swords and fight them off.

Haha XjoX thats quite funny, 'so the groom wouldnt leg it'! The old traditions areso romantic arent they? Who knew standing on the left was for that reason!

I havent got my dress yet, Im trying to lose weight before stepping foot in a wedding shop. I want to wear a veil and I think my H2B wants me to wear one too, although all he keeps saying is 'whatever you want darling'!! Some help he is!

I like the idea of my dad taking it off, as I dont want to be saying my vows with it over my face, but Im still not sure, oh well Ill keep having a think, the dress I choose may not suit a veil anyway

Thanks all for your responses though they have helped me a huge deal

I have to admit it is hard to decide when you haven't got the dress yet. At least you know you want one now so you can just work out what length to get when you find your dress. Just make sure that your dad has some practice at pulling it back over without taking half your hair out too before the day. There is nothing worse that messing your hair up or him faffing at the alter so a bit of rehearsal will sort any awkward moments.

i have got a full cathederal veil its longer then my dress its gorgeous and i have paid to have extra sparkle on it too, its cost more then the tiara and under skirt together!! im having my hair up and its going to sit just before my hair starts at the back. i didnt want it underneath my hair as i wanted to show all the detail off on the veil, my dress has quite a bit of detail on the back which you can still see through the veil but it means when i take the veil off it will be like people have seen my dress for the 1st time again as you will see the dress detail better x
