It's only just occured to me that people have ushers at weddings, how many is typical? I can see more money going on the suits for the boys than my dress and the bms combined!!

I'm really hoping the answer to this question is 2 haha!

Normally it will either match the bridesmaids, or would be one person for each side of the family (so two). We are having three but cant afford suits for them so they will wear their own suits and we will buy the waistcoats, cravats and buttonholes xxx

We are having 5 ushers and 1 pageboy. I am only have 2 bridesmaid and 1 flowergirl.

We are hiring the suits for them but having BM dresses bought/made.

It doesn't really matter how many you have each side as long as though they are important to you.

    We're not having any...

H2b has five best mates and I have my brother, so it was either have six or none. We're only having fifty to the day, and to be honest I'm not really sure what ushers do, so it didn't make sense to fork out six hundred quid plus on suit hire.

id like to have the same amount of ushers as bridesmaids, its the suit cost thats putting me off, their suits are going to cost more than my bridesmaid dresses! we are trying to keep costs down and this may be a place to cut it x

We're having 1 best man, 2 ushers, maid of honour, 2 bridesmaids & 2 flower girls. We will prob ask the ushers to pay/hire their own suits & like Linzi, we will get the waistcoats etc. But there aren't any rules on how many to have & some people don't have any. It's entirely up to you & your budget of course :) xx

I HATE it when people tell me oh you have to have this many bms this many ushers etc.
What i say is do what YOU feel happy with.
these days millions of couples dont stick rigidily to old fashined wedding etiquette.
dont have any if you dont want any! it all cost more and more doesnt it,
we have asked ours to wear black trousers ( what man doesnt have a pair) and white shirts (dead cheap from asda etc) and buying a waistcoat and cravat. cost us about £13 each usher max that way

i dont have anyone from my side that could be an usher hahahahaha! theres only mybro, but hes giving me away!

i think il just tell the boy that 2 will do as he'd not thought about it either. I know he'll have his brother as one. Maybe he could ask his cousin to be the other. what do ushers typically do? tell people where to sit? as im not arsed where people sit as his side outnumber mine quite alot, so it's pretty much a free for all ceremony wise

I was thinking of putting them in fancy dress outfits anyway lol instead of suits. problem is the decent storm trooper outfits cost a bomb lol. This is open for negotiation though lmao.

If they are in suits then yeah i think il do the same, get them in their own trousers/shirts and just get the waistcoat and cravats.

    Cool

thanks ladies! It hadn't even occured to me haha!

In the wedding party you have the bride and her bridesmaids and the groom and his groomsmen. Ushers are just the people who show the guests to there seats at the church x

I thought a groomsman was another name for an usher - i take it im wrong?!

We have groom Best Man 2 Ushers & Page Boy. OH couldnt decide between best mate or bro for best man so decided one would be one and one would be the other.... still needs to confirm whos who! but thats it! I want my brother as an usher as want him as part of wedding party... so 6 men and 4 girls (inc me and groom) x

I found this online that might help with the confusion lol

A groomsman is one of the male attendants to the groom in a wedding ceremony. The term usher is more common in the UK while the term 'groomsman' is more commonly used in America. Usually, the groom selects his closest friends and relatives to serve as groomsmen, and it is considered an honor to be selected. From his groomsmen, the groom usually chooses one to serve as best man.

For a wedding with many guests, the groom may also ask other male friends and relatives to act as ushers without otherwise participating in the wedding ceremony; their sole task is ushering guests to their seats before the ceremony. Ushers may also be hired for very large weddings.

as for toptable... only best man and maid of honour will sit on there! other BM, Bridesmaid, FG & one of the groomsmen/usher are all one family so will sit at table together anyway. and the other is my bro so he'll be at a table with his gf anyway! so all works out well i think! xx
