I noticed last night that I'm missing one of my white topaz's in my engagement ring. It has four, two eaither side of a larger peridot.

H2B keeps telling me it's fine as he bought me five rings (says he is still waiting to find the perfect one) as he didn't know which one I wanted more -each one has a personal meaning to it. The peridot one been my favourite colour.

But it still doesn't make me any less upset.

How long have you had it for hun? If its not that long I would take it back to where it was bought (along with the reciept if you still have it) and ask them to sort it for you, as it shouldn't have stones falling out that easily if it is still fairly new xxx

Well according to trading standards any item bought should be fit for use for at least 2 years, so the jewellers need to sort it out for you xxx

How long do my consumer rights last for?

To claim a full refund, you need to make a claim as soon as possible - in most cases you will have only a matter of days or weeks. If you are trying for a repair, replacement or partial refund the law says that you can take action against the trader (usually through the courts) for up to six years after purchase.

Does this mean that all goods should last six years?

No. Realistic expectations regarding the life of the object need to be taken into account. For example a 10 year old car is unlikely to last as long as a brand new one.

This is from Gloucestershire trading standards website. Xxx

ButtonandBoo, You may be able to claim for it on your insurance if your house contents are covered.

As for getting a refund I'm sure you would rather keep the ring than get the money and in reality the jeweller will probably say its due to wear and tear. Many people don't realise how brittle gemstones are and topaz can be very brittle so it may have cracked and fallen out.

I'm sorry you've lost the stone but "Fit for Purpose" doesn't mean "it will never break' or "it will never come out"

I hope you find a jeweller who can replace it for you. I would suggest yoiu try the smaller, independant shops first.

How funny i came across this post, as I have the EXACT same problem, a cheaper ring but means most sentimentally (i only have 4 in total though not 5 haha) out of all my rings and the cubic zirconia fell out last year, i just kinda went with it til recently when i thought i really need to do something. I know it's common to get diamonds and the like replaced but I wasn't sure if I'd get laughed out of the shop for enquiring about a cubic zirconia replacement
